steve samuelson the forum voted wednesday to move this fall's pacing break back one week because of a recently discovered conflict with upperclass parents weekend and founder's day despite the large amount of business on the agenda for this week's final meeting of forum ix the two-day session was plagued with attendance problems only eleven out of sixty faculty representatives showed up for the second session on thursday forcing the meeting to be adjourned because a quorum for doing business was not attained a quorum for the 125-member body consists of 18 students 18 faculty and two ad ministrators at wednesday's two-hour meeting the forum passed a resolution that advise d the faculty to re-evaluate the policy for the regulation of 4:00 quizzes the forum also voted to table a major report on ad missions until the first meeting of forum x thursday's adjourned session has been rescheduled for next wednesday at 4:10 p.m m uc room 308 forum elections will be held april 9 and 10 and forum x will elect its officers and organize its committees m a five-hour session on saturday april 28 in a close voice vote the forum ap proved a motion to move the pacing break from oct 13-15 to oct 20-22 because of s conflict with parent's weekend and founder's day oct 13-14 dean of students william quay noticed the conflict three weeks ago and brought the problem to the forum's steering com mittee according to mike silverman forum vice chairman the calendar for the 1979-80 academic year had been adopted by the forum m feb 1978 vice president for student affairs preston parr who proposed the calendar change to the forum stated there is no question that it the conflict should have been seen before parr argued that a change m the calendar was necessary because the oct 13 football game is the only home football game m october and consequently ttie only game suitable for upperclass parent's weekend he also stated that founder's day had been set for oct 14 the proposal underwent heated debate dr robert milk professor of accounting argued to defeat the calendar change because the approved calendar had already been printed m the university catalogue and many departments already had special programs planned for the long weekend forum representative marc holtzman 82 wondered about the possibility of changing the date of the home football game parr responded that this was im possible because we are m contractual agreement with another school for the football game parr also felt it was im possible to combine upperclass parent's weekend with the freshman parent's weekend scheduled for nov 3 because of problems with the university's facilities and services handling all the parents at once allen moran associate professor of economics argued against the calendar change pointing out that since the pacing break was only three days saturday to monday because of the labor day holiday he cannot see large numbers of students fleeing the campus mary tarduno 79 spoke up for many students arguing the importance of the pacing break m a 14-week semester and stating that the calendar change was necessary after the change was approved parr announced that he will ask barbara tallarico of the community relations office to become the central calendar coordinator for the university to avoid such a conflict m the future leonard wenzel forum chairman praised parr for what he felt was a viable long-term solution the forum considered two separate resolutions on the four o'clock quiz schedule with extended discussion saw photo by morrison forum chairman leonard wenxel addresses the members of forum ix wednesday daring the first of their double session meeting for march ten resolutions were considered among the resolutions passed was a calendar change for the fall of 1979 moving the pacing break sac x-rated film showing discussed at open hearing by mitchell miller the cultural and social events review committee held an open meeting on tuesday concerning the students ac tivities council's sac plans to present the story of o among the issues debated were cen sorship responsibility and morality ralph lindgren chairman of the philosophy department led the argument against the film on moral grounds lindgren stated that the university is committed to the preservation and ad vancement of knowledge not just scien tific knowledge but also aesthetic knowledge and moral knowledge the l niversity is committed to the moral point of view and the showing of this film violates this point of view he said presence offensive dominic santanasto 79 also said he felt the movie should not be shown he said the university should be sensitive to how this movie will affect certain members certain groups of people on this campus whether these people participate m the event or not i think the mere presence of that event affects us and is offensive to us scott frock 79 defended the movie by pointing out that the bookstore sell material that could be considered por nography and that chris miller author uf animal house spoke here without any problems and his lecture could be con sidered racy the large attendance at deep throat proved there is s demand for such s movie snd s vocal minority is interfering with the wishes of the majority . he added according to rob rosenthal sac president deep throat played to six showings of sso people each robert rothenberg 81 stated that the dollar vote is a good measure of what university students want if a lot of people pay there is demand if people do not pay the sac will recognize the lack of demand and there will not be any more such movies he said controversy erupted when wayne kraft professor of metallurgy stated that the university was not concerned with pleasing the students but with enlightening them barry giickman 79 a forum member questioned the ability of the university io recruit students if prospective students felt this was the university's attitude job phase-out stirs protest by employee by ed white in january the administration phased out the position of former equal op portunity coordinator elaine kellmer even though manpower funds for the job were available through september of 1979 kellmer said she was first informed by eric ottervik vice president for planning and thomas verbonitz director of ad ministrative services at a meeting on dec 14 that her
