staff expects 80-90 percent support for 44 book sales drive begins nov 22 the 1943 epitome will be distributed in the brown and white rooms drown hall this saturday between 11 o'clock in the morning and 2 in the afternoon just five months late the 1943 epitome has been over a rocky road since its failure to appear on the campus last june editor robert pugh carried the unfinished yearbook to rochester n v when he gradu ated and in august the still-incomplete book was returned to lehigh to be completed through the joint efforts of pi delta epsilon and the journalism department bring receipts students are expected to bring receipts with them when they call . . . new treasurer treasurer is elected to fill the vacancy left by the death of walter r okeson eu gene g grace president of the board of trustees of lehigh uni versity has announced the elec tion of lieutenant j.g john i kirkpatrick to the offices of treas urer and secretary to the board of trustees before lt kirkpatrick was granted a leave of absence to en ter the navy he held the positions of assistant to the offices which he will now fill until such time as lt kirkpat rick is released from government service r s taylor lehigh 95 will be acting treasurer and acting secretary to the board okeson's will provides for l u the pep rally held on friday night by the first battallion of ast's showed how truly the army men have taken to backing the school with a spirit much like that shown by the students of previous years william hittinger the master of ceremonies who was the man selected from the five-man com mittee of arcadia to conduct this rally expressed his thanks to the students and ast's for the fine quality of their cheering but he added that he was sorry to see so lew of the lately returned junior aist-rotc at the rally he added that those present at the rally were well versed in the lehigh songs and cheers and that a great deal of the credit for the successful cheering goes to neil culliney a recent graduate and cheerleader of several seasons past who has been instrumental in aiding in the cheering john a ford 27 did much to raise the morale of the team by his inspiring talk on the fighting spirit of lehigh teams throughout the years mr ford was well able to speak upon fighting spirit be cause he not only played varsity football and basketball at lehigh but also was the president of his senior class the gist of coach leo pender gast's impromptu speech was that the team really appreciated the spirit showed by the students in remaining in their seats until the final whistle blew the will of the late walter r okeson secretary and treasurer of the lehigh board of trustees pro vides for the eventual acquisition of his estate by lehigh university after the deduction of two spe cific bequeaths the entire estate estimated at over 50,000 is to be placed in trust the income to go to his daughter mrs anne okeson butchart and to his granddaugh ter margaret ann howard after the death of these im mediate beneficiaries the fund will be turned over to the university for any purpose in the discre tion of the trustees the two specific bequests of 1000 each are given to mr oke son's personal secretary miss ed na v dean and his housekeeper mrs frances harold pilon for their books according to prof wallace r biggs to facilitate the passing out of the books without checking into epitome records simultaneous with the announ cement of the 1943 yearbook's de livery comes the announcement of a sales-drive for the 1944 epitome beginning monday november 22 under the management of robert smith and tom skilling co-busi ness managers of the 1944 annual cost of the 1944 yearbook will be 3 fifty cents less than the 1943 book students may pay the en tire three dollars or may pay two dollars down and the other dollar on delivery all university book instead of being essentially a senior book the 1944 epitome will be an all-university affair with individual pictuies of each civilian student the epitome staff expects between 80 and 90 per cent support from the 500 civilian students enrolled indi vidual pictures will be taken by the mccaa studio there will be a more colorful and dramatic type of art in the 1944 epitome than in the past ac cording to editor fritz yon ber gen dividers will be two-page dramatizations a two-page air view of the campus showing all campus structures will feature the 1944 book on the inside and covers front and back seniors are urged to have their pictures taken as soon as possible so that the studio-pictures may also be used for application photo graphs a regular schedule will be set up for all civilian students returned rotc men will be ex pected to ihave their pictures taken they will appear in the class which they would have normally graduated with — febru ary june or october 1944 astp represented since the 1944 epitome will contain an extensive writeup with art on the ast cadets are expect ed to support the yearbook liber ally pictures will be made of companies at some future time the epitome staff as named last week included fritz yon bergen editor robert l smith and thomas skilling co-business managers stephen mcelroy finan cial manager and herbert kynor photographic editor turkey 9 pumpkini*ie feature army thanksgiving menu by bob treser big things are in store for the ast cadets stationed at lehigh when thanksgiving day rolls around this year if it ever gets here without disappearing into december in honor of the glorious repast shared by our forefathers and the indians the directors of lamberton and drown mess halls have planned a banquet that should send the cadets off to their afternoon classes with a deep feeling of satisfaction first on the menu for the feast is a fresh fruit cup to be followed by the main dish of roast turkey garnished with giblet gravy chest nut dressing and cranberry sauce playing second fiddle are mashed potatoes peas creamed onions and a sliced tomato and lettuce salad celery olives and pickles hold the secondary salad spotlight hot rolls apples grapes candy and nuts are also on the bill of fare just by way of topping every thing off well and better than that the powers that be have decided to really blow the lid off by hav ing both pumpkin pie and ice cream for dessert may draft workers present estimates show that over one hundred people will be needed to serve the cadets now on the campus with four counters running in the two mess halls each employing over twenty-five people the difficulties that will be experienced by the 82 employees are obvious suggestions have been made that canteen workers be drafted for the occasion now in case you'd like to know who to blame for this banquet first on your list would be mrs bertha bowman director of the lehigh dining services miss hazel davis mrs bowmanss assistant has charge of planning meals and buying for both lamberton and drown halls miss mary louise jenkins and miss mary hun sicker assistant dietitians are in charge of the serving at drown hall town council plans xmas party at its regular monthly meeting monday night the town council discussed plans for a christmas party to be given sometime in de cember although definite plans have not been made the party will be for the benefit of underprivileged children of bethlehem and ex penses will be paid by the coun cil the council also received re ports on the recent banquet held the night of the senior ball and on the membership drive being held in the sections the group voted to pledge 26 to the campus community chest of which 11 was contributed vol untarily by section b the meet ing night was also changed from the third monday of the month to the first thursday ralph a evans e.p.-j44 presi dent of the chemical society and the lehigh valley section of the american chemical society will hear dr gustav egloff director of research of the universal oil products company dr egloff acting as adviser to various government agencies deal ing with petroleum has been a leader for twenty-five years in the development of processes for the refining of petroleum gasoline and natural gas in recognition of his fine work egloff has been cho sen several times to represent american technology at various international meetings his subject petroleum as a chemical industry will discuss the tremendous values of petro leum and its part in the present and future the meeting begin ning at 8:15 will be held in the chemistry building pierce reports to army staff school capt samuel pierce former professor of military science and now an officer of the ast unit stationed at lehigh left a week ago wednesday to report to the army staff school ft leaven worth kansas at ft leavenworth he will take a twelve-week course in ad ministration and staff work in order to better manage his present position as executive officer of plans and training of the ast unit stationed here the school is located in kansas outside the town of leavenworth 30 miles north of kansas city upon completion of this tempo rary assignment capt pierce is expected to return to lehigh in the meantime capt james d campbell has taken over his duties lehigh alumni club holds its annual football dinner the philadelphia-lehigh club will hold its annual dinner this weekend at bookbinders restau rant in philadelphia this dinner has been held before the lehigh lafayette game for almost half a century the office of director of the mint in washington has sent an urgent appeal to the student body and all persons connected with the university asking them to bring hoarded pennies out of hiding be cause of an acute shortage in the metals required to make them the shortage results from the fact that people use glass jars and piggy banks until they have se cured a heap of one-cent pieces now that christmas is not far off the shortage will only be in creased during the last three years nearly 10,000 tons of metal have gone into
