the second town banquet held on saturday evening preceding the fall prom in the sun inn was attended by forty people and was pronounced a success by ernest r gerlach ch.e.-0'44 chairman of the banquet committee of the town council the speaker of the evening dr e h riley associate professor of english spoke on what have you included in his speech were several readings of humor ous poetry as well as topics of a more serious vein dr beardslee also spoke and pronounced the in vocation john w pharo e.e.-0'44 led the group in singing while his fiancee miss marie kern of beth lehem accompanied them on the piano the committee in addition to gerlach who also served as toast master was composed of lewis w hill m.e.-0'44 and david l keese m.e.-j'44 this group ex pressed the hope that there will be greater attendance at the next banquet of the council since this one was well worth the effort needed to present it to town men town banquet held prior to prom epitome staff is selected fritz yon bergen oct.-'44 was named editor of the 1944 epitome at a meating of the board of pub lications tuesday afternoon first regular meeting of the new 1944 staff will be held this thursday evening at 7:30 in the brown ana white rooms drown hall on the editorial board of sec tional editors are norman side botham j-45 james kleckner o-44 emerson virden jr f-46 robert treser j-45 and bud morrison j-44 thomas skilling o-44 and robert l smith f-44 were nam ed co-business managers stephen mcelroy j-44 financial manager and michael pappas j-44 assis tant financial manager photo edi tor is herbert kynor f-46 with richard ten eych sam browning and ralph woelfel as assistants the staff talked over the possi bility of including ast company or section pictures in the 1944 yearbook it was decided to fea ture the ast at lehigh no mat ter whether the ast cadets de cided to back the book by buying it or not it was also suggested that the epitome include an in memoriam section for those le high men who have died in the service fraternities are problem the problem of how to deal with fraternities in the epitome was not settled fraternities are continued on page 5 served as vice-president of university was one of most popular alumni of lehigh walter r okeson . . . . . . mourned by lehigh 150 ercs are now on campus about four weeks ago the first contingent of army specialized training reserve men arrived at lehigh approximately 150 in number the reservists are living in several on-campus fraternity houses under the direction of lt donald small their commanding officer the men comprising this group are all seventeen years of age waiting for their eighteenth birth days and induction into the reg ular army with the possibility of being sent back to college under the ast funeral services for walter r okeson 96 former vice-president oi the university were held mon day afternoon in packer chapel okeson died thursday morning after a long illness lehigh alumni members of the faculty and personal friends gath ered to honor the memory of one of the most popular and influen lial alumni of lehigh ever since his matriculation in 1892 okie had maintained an active interest in his alma mater and had at various times sorved as treasurer vice-president alumni secretary and football coach during his undergraduate days he was a star end en the football eleven and throughout his life had kept up his interest in the sport he had served as chairman of the rules committee for the national col legiate athletic association and was commissioner of the eastern intercollegiate association his extensive work in the field of or ganizing officials and standardiz ing the rules and regulations of the sport brought him a wide fol lowing throughout the country continued on page 5 usual colorful picture the weatherman did his best for the oc casion two energetic hepcats perform their stuff for one of the hotter numbers presented by bobby hackett at the senior ball which concluded the weekend's activities brown and white lehigh university igor sikorsky speaks in packm d lab on merits of helicopters after the war a capacity crowd of faculty students and astp's listened with eager ears to a lecture given by dr igor sikorsky the inventor of the helicoptor on friday evening in packard laboratory dr sikorsky head of vought sikorsky aircraft co was pre sented by the lehigh student branch of the american society of mechanical engineers he spoke on the value of the heli coptor in post-war industry sikorsky although now an american citizen was born in kiev russia he came to amer ica in 1919 in order to escape the communist regime and became an american citizen in 1928 in 1941 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in mechanical engineer ing by lehigh dr sikorsky virtually predicted that the helicopter would displace the automobile from the american household with this fact in mind he gave the audience a mental driving lesson by means of a color movie he stated that the operation of the craft was so simple that had it been invented 50 years before the automobile dr igor i sikorsky . . . . . . painted the future people would have complained about that magic contraption which is run with a multitude of levers and pedals the main feature of the heli coptor is its ability to take off and land in a space not larger than its own dimensions it rises and de scends vertically and is capable of standing in the air motion lessly a dinner was held by the stu dent society in the hotel bethle hem in honor of the speaker be fore the lecture st clair is elected pi tau sigma president william st clair m.e.-fm4 was elected president of pi tau sigma mechanical engineering honor society at its last meeting on thursday night the meeting was held in packard lounge and plans for the coming semester were discussed an effort will be made to con tact any ast pi tau sigma men in order that the chapter may 1 keep the society active during the ■coming months the possibility [ of a social event to replace the l annual engineers ball was glenn murray acting as mc introduced col caperton who urged everyone to attend the games especially ast men he suggested that two ast companies sponsor the next two rallies and emphasized the fact that all ast men should consider lehigh as their alma mater and act ac cordingly murray then introduced ben bishop former all-star lehigh wrestler who gave a memorable verbal tribute to the memory of vice-president walter r okeson who passed away last wednesday bishop related how okeson had graduated from lehigh as a c.e in 1917 how he quickly climbed the ladder of success gaining the positions of secretary of the alum ni association football coach at several colleges including lehigh various national duties and final ly vice-president of the univer sity finally bishop imaginatively told how okeson would have re acted at just such a pre-game rally coach prendergast spoke next commenting on the quality of
