lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday november 11 1980 215 hl-41m vol 92 — no 19 three sigma phi brothers face disciplinary charges three members of sigma phi society hive been charged with i iniverslty disci pline violations including theft of prop erty and retention of stolen property the charges arose at an open hearing last thursday nov 6 earlier reports said four members would be charged with individual offenses robert cohen associate dean of students and case officer for the sigma phi incident said a fourth individual may be charged sometime m the future david amidon sigma phi advisor served as the university friend to the individuals accused at thursday's heal ing and presented five objections to the charges the objections were prepared by an attorney who is a former brother of sigma phi the first objection regards the recent supreme court decision which amidon said grants defendants m university dis ciplinary cases the right to representa tion by legal counsel in the sigma phi cases no such counsel was provided since university regulations prohibits its use m disciplinary cases the second objection presented by amidon referred to the campus atmos phere surrounding the hearings the objection stated that the strong senti ment about the case made an impartial hearing almost impossible the third objection stated that evi dence regarding the individual charges is not substantially different from that already presented at the hearing of sigma phi as a whole double jeopardy may result from the duplication of charges against indi viduals amidon said university regulations regarding search and seizure were the subject of the fourth objection the individuals charged were not present when a search of the house was conducted amidon said according to the university code of conduct students must be present at the time of a search he said the fifth objection regards the statute of limitations of disciplinary charges according to university regulations all charges related to non-academic matters shall be brought within one year from the date of the offense and not the reafter amidon said the incidents occurred during the summer of 1979 and therefore the charges are invalid after the presentation of objections by amidon the disciplinary committee recessed until further notice cheers b&w photo by george the university whitcomb was accompanied by his wife al the recep tion given last week m his honor neglect cited in wlvr support case by maryellen connor the current problems of wi.vij are the result of the derelict performance by the university board of publications m the past according to preston parr vice president and dean of student affairs parr met with the board on thursday m response to their request for 30,000 to save the station the board has presented a sound case m its request for funding parr said al the meeting but if it had been doing its duty all along the station would not be m rouble now the board has disregarded its responsibilities for a long time parr noted that the board had approached him m the past with funding requests but failed to follow up on them wlvr lost its standing as an educa tional station last january because it failed to increase its frequency from 10 to 100 watts now m order to remain at 10 watts the station must move to 104.9 km by january 1081 or lone its license t operate walter trimble professor of journal ism and co-advisor to the student-run station said the 30,000 request will cover the station's short-term goal of a change m its frequency eventually wlvr wants to regain its educational status but that can be accomplished from its annual funds trimble said a decision on funding must be made shortly trimble stressed we cannot begin the move to 104.9 until the funds are guaranteed and if they are not gua ranteed before christmas we cannot meet our deadlines the board's next step m its plea for support according to parr is to com pose a letter containing a complete state ment of costs and a commitment from the board that they will meet their advi sory responsibilities the board can then present their case to president deming i-ewis parr added that the station faces competition from other groups also seek ing funding according to trimble the board of pub lications which supervises all publica tion activities recently formed an executive board to promote better rela tions between wlvr and both the administration and faculty this board will oversee all radio programming and supervise the allocation of funds and licensing procedures ray chaffee general manager of wlvr said the station takes an active role m events at the university and throughout the lehigh valley . it is the only station that devotes equal time to classical music jazz disco and rock chaffee said it's also the primary voice for lehigh sports which is of primary consideration to alumni activities council tries to overcome budget problems by valerie votto in spite of our efforts we can't com pete with other student activity coun cils fred schaufeld 81 student activities council sac concert chair man said after attending a regional con ference of the national entertainment and campus activities association schaufeld said the sac's 16,000 budget is less than one-quarter of what some schools have budgeted for concerts alone ln an effort in remedy the situation schaufeld said the university has entered into a cooperative buying agree ment with olher colleges which will ena ble the sac to book entertaiment at a
