colonel caperton who has seen service all over the continental united states was associated with the ccc at its inception in 1933 prior to his arrival at lehigh he was stationed with the rotc con tingent located at virginia mili tary institute colonel caperton at present is residing at the hotel bethlehem pre-medical societies hold banquet at sun inn tomorrow evening at 6:30 the combined medical societies of le high will hold a banquet at the sun inn with dr donald haff a lehigh graduate as their speaker according to leonard m del vec chio j-45 chairman of the ban quet committee dr haff who shares with his father management of the haff hospital in northampton will show a film of surgical operations which he has prepared himself ancl he will deliver a lecture on his mo tion picture as it is shown del vecchio was recently elect ed president of the r w hall pre-medical honorary society as of tuesday evening 340 men of the second contingent of 620 astp trainees had arrived on the lehigh campus as each trainee reported to the university he was given a seven day fur lough the majority of these men are of the foreign language group those men already on the campus have thus far occupied only the sigma nu delta upsilon theta delta chi alpha tau omega chi psi phi gamma del ta and chi phi fraternity houses the majority of the men in the second contingent have been sent from the campuses of texas a and m oklahoma a and m louisiana state and arkansas state universities while most of the remainder hail from camps walters and maxey in texas it is hoped that the new drown hall mess hall will be ready for use by next week but in any event it will be open for the be ginning of the next semester on october 11 dean wray h congden has an nounced that the university will in the near future receive a con tingent of the army specialized training reserve program all of these men will be seventeen years old they will be put through the regular basic engi neering curriculum of the astp these men will be housed fed and educated at the government's expense but will not be in the pay of the governmment and will have to furnish their own civilian clothing upon reaching their eighteenth birthday these students continue in the semester they will be sent to camp for their thirteen-week basic training this year no official freshman orientation week has been plan ned by the universtiy registra tion for the fall semester begins on monday october 18 and it is assumed that most of the fresh men intending to enter for that semester will have arrived on the campus by that time the fall semester begins on thursday oc tober 21 unlike other years the fresh men entering the next semester will have no chance to view the slides offered by the biology de partment in conjunction with their course in freshmen hygiene usually given during orientation week freshmen will in all probability have to take the psychological ap titude test and the english place ment examination during the first few weeks of the fall semester no regular frosh week scheduled registrar warns civilians deferments are temporary engineering and pre-medical students with a 2-a classification either ignore or are not fully aware of the fact that a 2-a deferment is never longer than for a period of six months and that all defer ments are up for reconsideration at the expiration of the deferment period george b curtis registrar informed the brown and white today in a warning to lehigh civilian students a renewal of deferment is not automatically granted to a student or other registrants but must be applied for in each instance the registrar indicated some local boards out of courtesy write to the college or employer asking whether renewal of deferment is recommended but many local boards do not do this some boards the registrar said notify the registrant that his period of deferment is up and give him instructions as to the procedure for a renewal of defer ment but since all boards do not follow this practice it sometimes happens that a registrant who has had a 2-a deferment is automat ically placed in class 1-a when his period of deferment expires see the registrar no local board likes to give a 2-a deferment after a 1-a classi fication has been sent out reg istrar curtis says students should ask the registrar of the university from twenty to ten days prior to the expiration of their deferment to notify their local boards of their desire for a renewal of their deferment and to make recommendation mr curtis warns lehigh under pierce the tapping of new men to cyanide junior hon orary will also take place at the affair this is the big chance for le high men to get together and really meet their college in the past size of the enrollment has prevented such an event as this from taking place so now is the time to really join in an evening of real spirit and excellent enter tainment fritz yon bergen ch e oct 44 chairman 44x reported on the foot ball ticket situation students and army men will not be allowed in the center sections unless they pay extra seats reserved for the undergraduates of the university include sections g h and i tick ets for the three home games will be sold to the astp men for 1.00 the group also discussed the ad visability of holding pep rallies and bob moore i e 45 was appointed take over the duties of colonel fay w brabson who retired recently colonel caperton who was born in union west virginia is a grad uate of darlington high school rome georgia he prepared for his military career at braben pre paratory academy new york in the army since his gradua tion from west point with the class of 1916 colonel caperton saw service with the aef during world war i when he
