faculty can get their tickets from their depart ment heads while those students who live in the town have had ar rangements made for them by stephen kutosh ch e 44x final entertainment arrange ments have been made and there will be group singing led by cap tain samuel pierce in addition to john mulholland noted magician who will provide the featured re marks of the evening predict large crowd although it is too early to ascer tain ticket sales it seems certain that a large crowd will be present fraternity houses are in many cases closing their kitchens for the evening after a good proportion of the students attended the uni versity convocation earlier in the semester the arcadia policy of an organized meeting once a month was proved with the double at traction of one of the world's best magicians and an opportunity to mix socially with other members of the university both student and faculty the success of the event seems assured other members of the commit tee assisting frankley e e o-44 and lee greenbaum ch e george b curtis registrar of the university has laid great em phasis upon his statement that students should not rely too great ly upon the tentative exams sched ule that has been released the registrar says that the final exam schedule will not be released until next wednesday september 29 the schedule that is being used by many students to plan their time for their exams is mere ly the tentative one this sched ule will be revised from time to time until it will most nearly suit the majority of students due to the fact that there are only twelve half days on which to have exams and fourteen possible exam combinations some students are certain to have conflicts the exams are so arranged that all classes meeting at the same hour on monday wednesday and friday will have their exams at the same hour the same will apply to those classes meeting on tuesday new astp group starts arrival for fall semester lehigh university's second con tingent of astp men including a trio of newly assigned officers be gan to arrive on the campus early saturday morning of last week the 600 men in the second con tingent will bring up to 1300 men the number of astp trainees as signed here the second battalion of the 3309 service unit ast will be com manded by captain warren n madison who will have lieuten ants john daugherty and elmer a grimm to assist him sigma nu chi psi and alpha tau omega fraternity houses are being used to house the 200 men of the new con tingent who have already arrived awaiting the conversion of drown hall into their mess hall the sec ond battalion cadets are eating at lamberton hall classes start oct 11 the second battalion will start their academic schedule on oct 11 the date on which the original con tingent will begin their second twelve-week term although many of the new trainees are qualified for advanced engineering courses most of the men will start their training in basic engineering when asked about the possibility of the original contingent of train ees having a short furlough be tween semesters lieutenant nick a lepore personnel officer for the 3309 service unit ast stated that this is being considered col lection of old books distribution of new ones and the necessity for physical examinations may elim inate the furlough however nothing definite has as yet been decided army now using 5 campus houses new army arrivals on the le high campus have already occu pied four and part of a fifth of the eleven campus fraternities readied for their use as dorms according to andrew a litzenberger super intendent of buildings and grounds drown hall commons now con verted into an army mess hall will be ready to serve meals by wednes day september 22 despite a week's delay in the delivery of equipment for the serving of meals other than the delay in the ar rival of the steam bars there has been no difficulty in securing ma terials for the renovation of the campus fraternities for structural changes in drown hall alumnus listed missing is prisoner after being reported as missing in action 18 months ago lt col onel alvin t wilson has finally been heard from in a letter to his son alvin who is a freshman presently enrolled at lehigh lt col wilson explained that he is in the phillipine islands as a japa nese prisoner of war and so far has not received any bodily injuries lt col wilson is a graduate of lehigh in the class of 1921 and is a member of the phi delta theta fraternity before pearl harbor lt col wilson was morale officer of the 4th division stationed at fort ben ning ga where he held the rank of captain in the early part of 1941 he was promoted to major and ordered to the philippines where he was placed in the field artillery stationed at cebu city when the japanese destroyed his base he was moved to mindinao and promoted to lt colonel when the philippines fell lt col wilson was automatically listed as missing in action and it was not until re cently that his family had a post only 190 out of 530 students cast votes will choose new chairman at next meeting 43 epitome nearly ready the 1943 epitome due on the campus since june is expected to be ready for distribution by octo ber 30 at the latest according to prof wallace r biggs faculty ad visor for this year's epitome the last of the art work and copy were sent to the publisher this week two outstanding features of this year's epitome are the four-color art paste-on of the alumni's me morial tower featured on the front cover and a complete index of all organizations intended to make the job of locating facts much easier three weeks ago when pi delta epsilon took over the task of com pleting the epitome there were about 60 pictures missing no ma terial edited on the sports section and no copy on the faculty and ad ministration last monday all art work was mailed and on tuesday all sports copy was sent to the printer plan june 44 issue in spite of a weakened campus morale plans are being laid and a neucleus is to be formed the lat ter part of this semester for a 1944 epitome the outstanding obliga tion of the yet unborn 44 staff will be to turn the volume out by next june's graduation another im portant point is that the 44 epi tome will feature the graduating classes of february 44 as well as june and october the 1944 epitome will naturally be smaller than the previous 350 page publications it is not ex pected to run to more than 200 or 250 pages because of so few fra ternities and other campus organi zations remaining along with the fact that future graduating classes will be much smaller professor biggs wishes that any students in terested in the compiling of the 1944 epitome contact him as soon as possible arcadia announces the election of william c hittinger feb 1944 john donahue feb 1944 and john e doxsey feb 1944 to the arcadia governing 5-man commit tee approximately 190 out of the 530 lehigh students cast ballots the three men chosen were within one vote of one another while i reid collmann also feb 1944 was fourth with just two votes less originally it was plan ned to have the student body vote for three men two from the classes of feb 1944 and june 1944 and from the oct 1944 group the point of asking for one choice from october was to place a man from this class on the committee how ever this did not work out so that no candidate from this class will serve on the present committee glenn murray and blame fer rell both advanced rotc men will remain from the commit tee the three new men will meet the two old members to se lect their new chairman at the next arcadia meeting usually the man receiving the largest number of votes is automatically made chairman but the results were so close that this will not be done last election for some time the 5-man committee selected to replace class officers will not hold elections for some time in the future since the next five in order from the past election will fill the positions if for any reason any member of the present committee leaves school the man with the next number of votes will fill the position the three men just re placed are ken swayne m e bernie egan that was used last year o finals list is tentative bernard beitel noted bethlehem trumpet player will give a concert sponsored by tone honorary mu sical society in packard chapel next sunday sept 26 at 4 p m mr beitel studied music under ernest williams erick leidzen and pierre herotte at the ernest williams school of music in new york this school has trained all the well known trumpet players as well as many other prominent mu scians in this country mr beitel also studied under harold rehrig of the philadelphia symphony or chestra he is the only trumpet player who is a member of the new york madrigal society and has appeared in concerts sponsored by this group in the great north ern and barlizon music halls in new york his composition was entered into the finals in the com petitive contests held by the ernest williams school it was performed by the ernest williams band in town hall with mr beitel direct ing holds many posts he is also well known as a teacher and is director of
