lehigh university brown and white vol 92 — no 37 bethlehem pa tuesday march 24 1981 215 861-4184 disciplinary measures approved by sanford block a statement of academic integrity stressing the importance of academic trust and personal honesty will be dis tributed to all students according to a resolution passed by forum xi last tuesday the statement which refers to disci plinary regulations in the university's code of conduct was suggested by the forum's academic regulation and dis cipline subcommittee as part of its report to the forum citing a general ignorance of the university code of con duct for students and a somewhat lax attitude among students towards the dis ciplinary process in general the report dealt with several changes in that process the statement of academic integrity which the resolution suggests should be distributed among all students states that upon registering at the university all students are within the university discipline committee's jurisdiction over all disciplinary cases referred to it by the dean of students the adoption of this statement was passed hy forum xi bill it was sent back to subcommittee for rewording the report and resolution also recom mended that the records of students acquittals in disciplinary cases by avail able only to the dean of students office and the discipline committee and not to prospective employers graduate schools and the like although this has been the current practice of the dean of students the report says it should be adopted as a formal policy the resolution went on to recommend that the committee periodically report the decisions in disciplinary cases with the names of those found guilty included to faculty and students preferably through the brown and white currently the decisions in the cases are reported to the b&w with names deleted the forum also resolved to recom mend that any student found guilty of an academic offense be automatically dis missed from the course involved receiv ing a failing grade in the course after much debate the forum decided to send the fifth part of the committee's proposal which recommended that fail ing grades received for academic offenses be differentiated from regular failing grades on transcripts back for further study the f's received for aca demic offenses would be designated disciplinary f's a consideration to recommend that a minimum mandatory penalty of one semester's suspension for any academic offense be instituted was postponed due to a lack of time the university seems to have cap tivated these seniors but do they wear yellow ribbons sac to take over management of hourglass in an effort to keep the operation of the hourglass student-based it will come under the management of the student activities council sac . said jeff aibel 82 chairman of the social alternatives committee the decision was made at wednes day's meeting of tne committee which this semester functioned as an ad hoc committee running the hourglass there will be six elected administra tive positions for the hourglass next year consisting of executive and asso ciate directors and directors of pro gramming publicity ambience and finance the executive director will be elected by the student body in the sac general elections but must have served one aca demic year in an hourglass position prior experience is required because the position will involve dealing with the food services the dean of students office and other services aibel explained the associate director will also be elected by the student body in the sac general elections but need not have had previous experience with the hourglass the four remaining positions will be elected after the sac general elections by both the newly elected officers and the present officers of the sac richard smith administrative super visor of food services considers the hourglass a success even though it is not yet making money it's a nice event that's been accepted by the students he said we're work ing on revising the labor schedules and maybe changing some menu items he added the turnout at the hourglass held march 19 was good aibel said but not as impressive as those of the earlier dates possibly the irish folk music appealed to too small a group he said we're going to try to make the hour glass more cost efficient aibel said he also noted that there have been problems with people who attend the events but don't buy anything the next hourglass will be held on april 2 and is scheduled as lehigh tal ent night prof opposes nuke power proposes cool by anne lountzis although he holds only one of pennsyl vania power and light pp&l com pany's 58.8 million shares barry bean associate professor of biology is chal lenging pp&l's construction of a nuclear power plant near berwick columbia county according to bean he and three other shareholders have introduced a proposal questioning assumptions about nuclear power and calling for the termination of pp&l's development and investment i'n nuclear power facilities the proxy statement will be voted on at pp&l's apr 22 meeting in harris burg pp&l opposes the resolution the resolution also calls for at least one of the two berwick reactors to be converted to burn coal bean admitted that this change would be quite expensive and would have been economically better had it been done years ago the consideration for this change has been delayed for many years bean said technically it would have been all natural this piece of artwork constructed of wood is being loaned to the university courtesy
