lehigh university brown and white vol 92 - no 38 bethlehem pa friday march 27 1981 215 861-4184 rehearing for sigma phi pending written statement an individual member of the sigma phi society has stepped forward and taken the hlame for the half-keg of beer allegedly stolen from phi delta theta fraternity according to dean of stu dents william quay and peter pestu lozzi 81 president of sigma phi as soon as quay receives a written statement from the sigma phi brother he said the university's discipline com mittee will schedule a rehearing of the case the fraternity was found guilty m the case's original hearing last thursday quay said he received an oral report from ihe brother mi wednesday tins constitutes new evidence he said and the new hearing will determine whether the fraternity as a whole is still culpable the house has been on university probation since september for earlier offenses the incident of the allegedly stolen half-keg occurred on jan 20 according to a campus police report a witness stated she saw someone kick open phi delts rear cellar door and flee carrying a keg of beer he then ran towards sigma phi and entered the house she said at the hearing last thursday sigma phi pleaded not guilty to the two charges brought against them theft of properly and retention of stolen property the ib(-v ■i * „.■. this extreme energy conservation measure al the univer kill-a-wan sjtv has left many in thp dark bell telephone investigates phone fraud by 1 7 students by tom dipiazza seventeen universitj students who allegedly used an invalid telephone credit card number to make 2,5.00 worth of calls vive been positively identified aunng a telephone company investiga tion according to a bell of pennsylvania security representative charles orner an investigator for the telephone company says as many as 211 or 30 additional students could be impli cated as the investigation continues i didn't come here on a fishing expe dition he said all 17 of the students orner interviewed during ins three days on campus gave admissions of guilt he said it's pretty hard in deny ornet added lie explained that bell e.f pen nsylvania investigators iirsi contacted numbers charged to thc invalid credil card then knowing the number of the phone from which tho call was placed hey used interviews to ry to determine who made the call according to orner the telphone com pany now has three opiums to demand restitution to prosecute the individuals or to do hoth that decision has not been made yet he soid ii some students are prosecuted it is likely that they would be charged with criminal mischief orner said the crim ifc semiformal canceled loss not substantial by grace wells the semiformal sponsored by the interfraternity council ifc slated for tomorrow night was canceled because we were losing too much money according to del markward 81 ifc president out of 300 tickets about 80 were sold we could not have expected to sell more than 100 tickets by saturday mark ward said adding 1 needed about 180 tickets to break even markward attributed the lack of sales to too much competition from other formals on campus the ifc may host a homecoming for mal next fall after a football game according to markward it may try to sponsor another semiformal iit a time when more girlfriends are visiting he said adding that it may become an annual event the cancellation did not constitute much of a loss for the ifc budget markward said because the comedian contracted for the event will still per form saturday sponsored by the student activities council dennis blair the spe cial guest of rodney dangerfield's janu ary show can be seen at 8 p.m m packard lab aud admission is 4 the band joyous which i.s holding the ifc to their contract will be playing saturday at beta theta pi at 1(1 p.m , our other big loss would have been the 600 glasses we purchased in give away as party favors markward said noting that we can use them next year the purchase created a little tempor ary setback for this years budget he said the negligible loss will be less than 100 according lo jeff fettcrman 81 ifc social chairman markward said the ifc will try to sell some of the liquor it purchased for ihe semiformal to fraternity houses we bought it m bulk he said so we can sell it cheaper than the houses could usually buy it ." markward said he proposed the semi formal for the benefit of those fraternity houses which do not host their own he said the house presidents were inter ested m the idea and m fact most of the tickets were purchased by fraternity men tickets purchased at the sacdesk can be refunded there buzzer-beaters what is the opposite of four fum ducks in a intramural college bowl competition four shoes these and other teams compete every sunday and thursday at 7 p.m in neville lounge see sigma page ' see legal page 6 inside csc news analysis p 4 turned on to lsd p 8 wlvr p 1 1 young boxes p 16 theta delt wins p 16
