gard to living groups housing dates the night of the ifgi ball any living group expecting to ask permission to entertain out of town lady guests the saturday night of i f g i ball will please hand in its request by noon mon day sept 6 this is important in order that letters may be sent to the chaper ones concerned well in advance of the dance the request should con tain complete information listing the names of the students in the house having guests the ladies names and addresses and also the name and address of the chaper one staying at the house over the weekend the signature on the re quest should be that of the student taking responsibility for the mem bers of his living group adhering to the usual university rules and regulations the period involved in permis sion extended is from noon satur day sept 11 to sunday sept 12 4 p m new officers arrive here rader's band uses glenn miller style tickets for the 1.f.-g.i ball to be held from 10 to 2 saturday evening sept 11 on the top floor of grace hall were distributed to the various living groups last monday by i f committee rep resentatives bud rader's orchestra one of the outstanding bands in this sec tion will provide the evening's en tertainment rader has played on many occasions at quite a few of the eastern colleges including perm state the university of pennsylvania franklin and mar shall and ursinus he is currently appearing at the rainbow room in allentown where he has gained a prominent name the band uses the very popular glenn miller style so we can ex pect many song favorites both sweet and hot rader who plays both the saxaphone and clarinet will feature evelyn markle as his girl vocalist the first trumpeter is exceptionally good and worth while hearing most of the orches tra has had quite a bit of exper ience with large name bands of the past arcadia resells tickets as has been the custom in the past all fraternity men will buy tickets any men desiring to resell their tickets should leave them at the arcadia office tickets will be sold for 1.10 per couple to the soldiers by representatives in the barracks and all students may purchase them at the arcadia of fice at 1.65 per couple dean congdon has granted per mission for dates to stay at the fraternity houses saturday night sept 11 petitions must be sub mitted by monday noon sept 6 these should include the names of all students having dates the names and addresses of the dates the names and addresses of chap erones for each living group and the name of the person assuming responsibility some sort of entertainment probably will be provided during the intermission but the i f com mittee has not decided just what it will be as yet refreshments will be available at the dance and checking facilities will be provided the chaperones chosen for the dance are col and mrs fay w brabson lt and mrs j foster and dr and mrs claude g beardslee many still unanswered questior and suitability of the various ser prevent lehigh from formulating alents for service courses in spite ( the subject according to dean wri the simplest situation in regard navy program which enables a sti curriculum at another college it must be remembered however that transfer credits from certain colleges and universities with scho lastically inferior standards are not accepted at full credit-hour value advanced men in luck the advanced astp like the navy is in a good position as far as college credits are concerned because the army has been send ing inspectors to examine the ad vanced students towards the end of the courses this gives lehigh an excellent yardstick with which to measure achievement at any university regardless of that insti tution's previous standards with ast courses run on a 12-week ba sis however it must be pointed out that these courses will not be considered the equivalent of the regular university 16-week course two-thirds credit would be the probable ratio of these army cred its to lehigh credits according to dean congdon the language groups would fall within this cate gory still greater difficulty in the es tablishment of credit equivalents was found in the ast basic train ing this program is still too young still too much in the for mative stage and trainee selection standards still too low for the uni versity officials to judge the value of the work done the lack of a standard examination for basic trainees at the close of this period greatly handicaps lehigh in ascer taining the quality of the work at other institutions dean congdon expressed the hope and the expectation that tests for basic trainees similar to those given to the advanced trainees by the army would set this situation on a simple just plane the ques tion of the suitability of certain courses transferred to the student's civilian curriculum will also govern the number of lehigh cred its granted correspondence courses rate the correspondence courses of fered by the armed forces insti tute rank high in the opinion of the lehigh faculty due to the very fine testing methods utilized by institute which has secured the services of various leaders in the field as well as the excellent chi cago university department the questions of the exact lehigh equivalents of these correspon dence courses and the suitability of the particular courses taken to the curriculum of the individual student still remain to be settled these questions are not matters of general policy for each individual case will have to be given separ ate consideration the lehigh equivalents of such specialized work as radar courses can only be ironed out with time even the subject of rotc cred its cannot be resolved at this time a pre-war lehigh contract with the army calls for the inclusion of four semesters of basic rotc as a graduation requirement and also specifically prohibits the substitu tion of any other type of military instruction thus navy and marine continued on page 4 college credits for service men certain details cloudy is concerning the quality quantity vice training programs continue to a system of lehigh credit equiv f repeated faculty conferences upon ay h congdon to credit equivalents exists with the ident to continue his normal college fix quarters night and day drown hall by day and one fra ternity house per night are being readied for occupation by the new group of astp men according to andrew litzenberger superinten dent of buildings and grounds whose office is supervising remod eling of drown hall and the cam pus fraternities for army use during the day the crew of 65 men employed by this office is in stalling necessary equipment in the basement of drown hall to convert it into an army mess hall while in the evening this same crew is cleaning setting up beds and making minor carpenter re pairs in the various fraternity houses so that they may be avail able for use as astp dorms when needed while extensive remodeling can not be accomplished in a single night in general the crew is fin ishing one house per evening sigma nu has been completed al ready and carpenter work has been started on the third floor of delta tau delta where a new shower room will be installed the crew doing this revamping includes carpenters from outside the university an electrician and plumber and several laborers from the power house except for some plumbers secured from outside sources the rest of the men are regular employees of the office of the supervising architect coke band here colonel fay w brabson head of the military department dis closed on monday that lehigh might be the scene of one of the coca-cola parade of spotlight bands programs in the near fu ture a similar program featuring will osbourne's orchestra was presented at lafayette last week members of the civilian student body taking military will be ad mitted to the broadcast as will the army trainees pde to finish publication of 1943 epitome earle wallick elected acting editor of book the 1943 epitome publication has been taken over by pi delta epsilon honorary journalism so ciety robert w pugh epitome's 43 editor who is now working in rochester n y for eastman ko dak company asked to be relieved of the responsibility of publishing the epitome because it conflicted with his work and pi delta ep silon offered to complete the job the society believed that the pub lication would be completed at an earlier date if the work was done on campus instead of leaving it in pugh's hands the society then elected earle wallick former editor of the le high bachelor as acting editor and co-ordinator of the work majority of work done even though the majority of the work has been completed several sections must be rewritten and ar ranged the sports section and the 1943 history must be rewritten and organized all of the photography and art has been completed ex cept for the section pages prof wallace r biggs adviser of pi delta epsilon went to new york last week and again yester day to check with the printers and engravers on publication plans the epitome will not be ready for the students until the middle of october at least but several other colleges and universities co lumbia for one still have incom plete year books so lehigh is not alone mathematics honoraries hold society meeting pi mv epsilon honorary mathe matics society held their first meeting of the semester last wed nesday evening aug 25 in packer hall in collaboration with new tonian freshman mathematics so ciety prof joseph e illick instructor in mathematics was the main speaker for the evening he gave a 30 minute speech on the applica tion of mathematics to engineering relating several of his personal ex periences along these lines the meeting lasted an hour and refreshments were served something about soldiers ' : they're very nice but shy can it be that the army cadets at lehigh are shy with the girls could be the story from the senior hostesses at both the uso headquarters and at the pro-cathedral church is that they have from three to four times as many available girls begging to be given a chancejo entertain lehigh cadets as there are astp men showing up at the social parties being sponsored by the two local organizations the brown and white sent a reporter around sunday afternoon to see what the situation was and this is what he found at uso headquarters there were girls galore and only a hand ful of cadets — and the girls were good-looking too on a small cozy dance-floor upstairs to the tune of smooth recordings three or four continued on page 2 tau delts laboratory monday evening moving pictures showing surgi cal operations were presented plans for the semester banquet were discussed the banquet will be held on oct 4 the place for this affair has not yet been de cided assisting major russell h john son commanding officer for le high's astp detachment are four youthful officers who besides in structing trainees in military the ory act as billeting and supply offi cers as well as adjutant and per sonnel officer second lieutenants nick a lepore and william n koppel arrived at lehigh july 1 to be followed later by first lieu tenants richard o weber and richard b sumner lieutenant sumner instructor in military theory is a graduate of indiana university 40 where he was a rotc student an assistant employment manager in civilian life lieutenant sumner who en tered the army in april of 1942 is the only one of the ast lieuten ants who is married camp wal ters texas was lieutenant sum ner's last post weber is from brazil lieutenant weber instructor in military theory has been in the army since february prior to which time he was a representa tive of the firestone company in sao paolo brazil a rotc man lieutenant weber was graduated from the university of dayton in ohio 1936 like lieutenant sum ner lieutenant weber is an in fantry man billeting and supply officer lieutenant koppel is a philadel phian a salesman for the frei hofer baking company before the war lieutenant koppel has been in the army since january 1941 he graduated from philadelphia business college in 1931 with the 28th infantry division for a while lieutenant koppel's last post was camp carrebella florida lepore from ft knox lieutenant leporte is the adju tant and personnel officer for the 3309 service unit after gradua tion from boston college in 1937 lieutenant lepore was a purchas ing agent for lewis confection aries inc until his induction in 1941 originally a selectee lieu tenant lepore won his commission at grinell college lowa brown & white lehigh university deferments available to feb 9 46 according to dean wray h congdon dean of undergraduates any member of the present freshman class who is scheduled to graduate in february 1946 and enrolled in an engineering chem istry physics or pre-med course and whose eighteenth birthday is before the end of january of next year is eligible to receive a 2 a deferment from his draft board this is in accordance with the announcement from selective service headquarters which states that anyone graduating from an essential curriculum within 24 month of his draft registration date is qualified to receive a defer ment
