has hired a black law school graduate as an assistant profes sor m the college of business and economics malcolm barksdale who will be tin first black faculty member since last spring and the first ever m the college of business and economics w ill be teach ing law 1 1 . introduction to law and law 201 business law barksdale 24 who graduated cum laude from howard universttj m washington d.c m 19,79 visited the i ni versity on april i i thought-he was super nd roger watkins assistant dean ol students and one of the three black administrators al the university he ii lit into lehigh very nicely he said from his qualifi cations it seems like he will be an asset to the university barksdale met with seven or eight members of the black students union bsl.'l and immediately set up a good rapport according to louis jones 82 former bsu president he seemed very educated and the students were quite impressed with ins openness and perso nable character jones said gina mcßean us secretary of the hsr did not meet barksdale but said she heard very good things about him the new professor has been termed very outgoing and dynamic accord inn l mcßean who called his hiring a big accomplishment for the school brian brockway distinguished proles sin of law marilyn denies and lames tobak both assistant professors of law interviewed barksdale at howard uni versity on march 20 after an extensive search they decided he was the most qualified candidate for the position brockway said barksdale worked for 15 months m southern alabama as a reginald her bert smith fellow a very selective position according to brockway who said it requires the recipient to provide legal services to an underprivileged community brockway who is the affirmative action advisor lor the business college said the accounting and law department started to advertise for the position about the middle ol ill " he said the department contacted law schools m the washington d.c area and philadelphia — any area where we could find a fair representation of women and minority " candidates they had " close to 60 appli cants he said gerries who has been teaching at the university since 1979 is the first woman lawyer m the department of accounting and law having her recruit with us was helpful ," brockway said adding hav ing a black now to help us recruit will also be good the last black faculty member at the university was gary burnley of the fine arts department he left the university last spring to work at a small arts college ii new york city ♦ * • • in tuesday's issue the brown and white will look at black faculty recruiting efforts made during this year college republicans owe money for convention by andy lehren the lehigh college republicans deli mtely owe 668.74 to the stabler arena for i he club's mock convention last april according to richard fritz director of events stabler arena management began investigating the matter after brown and white inquiries two weeks ago and were unable at first to confirm if the bill was outstanding because it might have turn paid 111 rough another account fritz said however both fritz and roger wai kins assistant dean of students con tuesday that the bill is outstanding stabler arena manage menl hu c yel to determine how they will deal with the college republicans m the delinquent payment ofthe bill i am disgusted with the complete avoidance by the college republicans of the bill fritz states i leel they had no intention of paying it and the least they could have done is called up after the convention and say we can't pay the bill what should we do a method of payment then could have been worked out he added although john kriekson 82 the treas urer of the club at the time of the conven tion was not responsible for the financing of the convention because dave spoont 80 was finance chairman of the convention kriekson said i don't think they did have the money at the time for the convention to pay the stabler bill but i was under the assumption they had an understanding with the stabler people " the club did hold fundraisers for the convention but how much was earned could not be determined the officer m charge at the time ol the convention kirn perrone 82 was unavailable for comment as a result ol the college republicans actions fritz said stricter measures will have to be used when groups want to rent the arena he added that he regret ted the decision we want students to use the building and we were tickled when the college republicans wanted to use the facility " he said we don't want it to harm any possibilities of student groups using the arena he added fritz said the tighter measures for using thi 1 arena would probably include support and sanctioning lor a club by an authorized body such as the dean of stu dents office and proof that a club has sufficient funds to rent the facility the college republicans club owes 13(1 for printing costs to the dean of stu dents office which picked up the tab to avoid credit problems for the university watkins said those costs included a 20 bill at cen tral copying and a 118 bill at menne i'rintery now christmas city printing according to watkins the college republicans have until the last week of next semester to pay the printing bill if the bill is not paid the club officers at the time of the mock convention will be per sonally billed and
