if advanced sales are any indi cation of the crowd to be expect ed there should be between 200 and 300 couples at the dance tick ets will be sold this week at the supply bureau arcadia office dispensary and at the door at 3 a couple romig's 13-piece band will fea ture dotty speck a well-known singer around these parts as the girl vocalist the first trumpeter has had quite a bit of experience with big bands and his solos on various harry james numbers are worth hearing the bass player is good and has toured the east on previous occasions many song favorites both hot and sweet will be played all very danceable mu sic has been here before one of the foremost bands in the valley romig has played at the sunnybrook in pottstown the madrid ballroom in harrisburg dorney park central park and on numerous occasions at lehigh lafayette and muhlenberg the lehigh collegians will play at intermission which will be at approximately 12:15 p m this is their first appearance since they reorganized having lost most of the old men to the various reserve units despite their new outfit they should be in good shape by saturday night soft drinks will be served at the dance and there will be am ple facilities for checking articles in case of rain kutosh ramsdell get council posts expect engineers although it is not known what course these new men will take the expectation is that they will begin their basic engineering courses when their semester starts on oct 11 at present lehigh is training some 730 astp men this num ber consists of about 100 foreign area language students and the rest are men following basic or advanced engienering according to a letter of intent received last weekend from the war department lehigh may re ceive its second contingent of as tp trainees by sept 13 although the details are still obscure it is believed that the trainees will number about 600 making the to tal army representation on the campus over 1300 students it is understood that one of the factors which may hinder the negotia tions is the lock af adequate eat ing facilities for the additional trainees e k smiley director of admis sions received the letter and re ported that while the letter has not been accepted by the univer sity there is every reason to be lieve that it will be accepted in the near future take campus houses an additional 600 trainees on the campus will reprer«sjnt about the maximum number of soldiers that lehigh can house to make accommodations for the astp men men who are at present liv ing in the campus fraternity houses price hall the former delta sigma phi house and the cosmo politan club will be forced to find new living quarters by sept 4 exceptions to this limit are the chi phi house theta delta chi and the cosmopolitan club these houses will have to be cleared by sept 13 in the two weeks before the new contingent of trainees ar rives the necessary repairs will be made it is expected that the new men will have been chosen for astp service as others have in the past they will come to lehigh from star training units throughout the 4th sth and bth corps areas these star training units are made up of men who have been selected either at replacement centers or training centers for further college train ing at the regular monthly meeting of the town council held last tuesday in drown hall officers of the council were elected to serve for this and the following semes ter steven kutosh ch e oct 43 was selected by the council as vice-president robert ramsdell arts oct 43 as secretary and the new treasurer is lewis hill m e 1944 the president of the council is ralph a evans eng phys june 44 the presidents of the various sections reported on the organiza tion of their groups and the com bining of certain of them was dis cussed it was decided to allow all sections to remain as before ex cept sections a and m which would be combined under the presidency of steven kutosh sec tion j which includes the entire west side was put under the tem porary chairmanship of lewis hill since at present it lacks any organization latest possible evacuation dates released smiley will announce definite schedule soon on sunday aug 22 1943 at 4 o'clock in the afternoon the lehigh university and astp glee clubs and a triple trio from moravian college for women will present an hour of music in packer memorial chapel admission is free this is the first appearance of the summer glee club this year or any other year according to ber nard j egen met e oct 43 president of the combined musi cal clubs the glee club is even better this summer than it was last spring only a few of the old members of the glee club are back this year and most of the 30 civilian members are freshmen among the ten army members there is much talent and two of the solo ists on sunday's program are as tp students trio begins program opening the program are two numbers by the triple trio from the moravian college for women and the lehigh university special chorus mrs helen minnick good rich directing the heavens are declaring by beethoven and je sus joy of man's desiring by bach the lehigh university glee club and the astp glee club directed by t edgar shields will then sing three songs well adapted to a men's glee club including the ardent huntsmen by davis john peel by andrews and stout-hearted men by romberg next on the program are two solos by miss marilyn weddigen accompanied by mrs w a mcdonald who will sing the maids of cadiz by delibes and if i could tell you by firestone cadet is soloist pvt george d shutak an as tp cadet who graduated from west technical high school cleve land ohio is the violin soloist in the next two numbers he will be accompanied by mrs lamson rodino by beethoven-kreisler and traumerei by schumann the moravian women's college triple trio will then sing three more numbers accompanied by mrs mcdonald they are when a maid comes knocking by friml sweethearts by herbert and you are in love by friml prof grieg the probable arrival of as many as 600 more astp men on the campus will necessitate the evacuation of most fraternities and other living groups this move does not come as a complete sur prise and already a tentative evac uation schedule has been made public by dean wray h cong don evacuation schedule to be evacuated by sept 4 1943 alpha tau omega fraternity beta theta pi fraternity chi phi fraternity delta sigma phi house delta tau delta fraternity phi delta theta fraternity price house to be evacuated by sept 13 1943 chi phi fraternity cosmopolitan club theta delta chi fraternity however this schedule will not be final until final confirmation is received from the army that the new group of trainees is actually being sent to renovate houses allowance has been made in most cases for the time needed to renovate these houses however in some cases it is necessary to start installation of additional plumbing fixtures earlier than on the dates given above all efforts will be made to avoid interference with the students still occupying the houses in the dean's statement the term evacuation is defined as the removal of all personal be longings and in the case of fra ternity houses removal of all fur niture not to be left for army use few town rooms various moves have already been initiated to relieve the hous ing problem create by this new development since only a few rooms are available on the regis trar's list of rooming houses in town however it is expected that about 125 of the 148 men to be evacuated will be housed in off campus fraternity houses this information was received by the interfraternity council committee which under the chairmanship of lyster frost met e oct 43 and with the cooperation of ted me gas met e feb 44 president of the interdorm council has already done much to relieve the situation all students indicating a desire tc secure living quarters in off-cam pus fraternity houses will prob ably have done so by the end of this week if this room-shift plan works an anticipated the great majority of the students concerned will be taken care of part of the plan is to reopen the alpha kappa phi house by the first of september for a group of 25 students if any such group as a unit or individual students are in terested in securing rooms in this house they should get in touch with robert herrick alumni of fice col fay w brabson professor of military science and tactics since march 1942 was retired from active duty yesterday word of his retirement came from the headquarters of the third ser vice command in baltimore al though colonel brabson is past the statuatory retirement age of 60 he has remained on duty due to the war amergency previous to his lehigh post he has held army commands through out the world he has been re sponsible for the construction of many army camps in this country including camp wolters in texas the largest infantry replacement camp in the country during the first world war he was chief of staff for a combat di vision in france and was awarded the distinguished service medal and the french legion of honor much of colonel brffbson's army experience has been centered in the far east he was stationed for a while in borneo and has trav eled extensively in this part of the world he also served on the phil ippine islands and some of the maps used by generals mcarthur and wainwright in their defense of these islands were drawn under his direction previous to his le high appointment he held the same position at rutgers univer sity bethlehem pa wednesday august 18 1943
