reactions from members of the university community vice president uul provost arthur humphrey says ihat much ol lhe current reaction is unwarranted i'm flabbergasted that this has become an issue humphrey said this has become an issue belore it's an issue . the university is considering selling a portion oi its rare book collection to finance a planned addition to mart library vice president of planning erik ottervik m an address to forum xii sept 23 said the administration cur rently does not see any alternative to the sale of some portion of the rare book collection but he said that if any por tion of the collection is sold the items will not be among those important to the university's academic or research pro grams or that have some unique rela tionship to the school's or region's history humphrey stated that the university has made no definite plans to sell a por tion of the rare book collection and added that the faculty and rare book committee will absolutely be con sulted before any portion of the collec tion is sold he noted that david stam of new york's public library and other experts are being consulted on both the sale and m determining the value of the collection according to humphrey the only agreement that has been made so far was the decision to ask the board of trus tees for 50,000 to study possible design changes m the library addition plan humphrey said the addition currently will require 115 million to fund if the i'niversity decides not to sell rare books to finance the addition its cost would have to be cut to 8.5 million humphrey said this would necessitate a reduction m the library addition's size humphrey said humphrey said that one estimate ot the value of the collection was 12 mil lion which humphrey called just a wild guess anything said now is just spec ulation he said while humphrey says that there is no issue as of yet norman giradot depart ment chairman of religion studies said it's a problem of information and facts this is a procedural issue since appar ently the decision to propose the selling of the rare books was made without the consultation of the faculty " girudot added we are dealing with issues of governance and decision making at lehigh according to giradot the prop osal to sell the rare books will be pres ented to the board of trustees on oct 9 ross yates government professor and the chairman of the rare books commit tee earlier sent out drafts of a letter of objection to the sale of the rare books to the four other members of the commit tee asking for their comments and sug gestions according to edward gallagher associate professor of eng lish and a rare book committee member a final letter of objection was sent to university president deming lewis gallagher said according to humphrey yates letter to the president contained inaccuracies unfortunately he wrote that without knowing the facts it has misinformation m it " humphrey said when told what humphrey had said yates replied he'll have to do the explaining i don t know what he means " yates said that his feelings concerned the selling of the rare books were expressed m his letter to the editor reflects what he has said m his letter to lewis david lewis the department chair man of modern language said that the selling of the rare books is an issue of public image according to i_ewis there is a second issue involved that of the poor faculty-administration com munication the university can only function on a basis of partnership lewis commented another rare book committee member anna herz professor of mod ern language said that once it's done the selling of the rare books , it's done not everyone m the university com munity is upset with the selling of the rare books according to john tarduno 83 a student representative to the board of trustees there are two reasons why the rare books should be sold it will not only pay for the building but it will set up an endowment fund which will be used to purchase new books tarduno said if the selling of the rare hooks is the only way of funding it the building then i'm m favor of it very few people use the books or are aware of their existence he said
