lehigh university brown and white vol 93 - no 13 215 861-4184 bethlehem pa tuesday october 13 1981 trustees approve funding for mart plans by nick kin funding for the development of final architectural plans for the addition to mart library was approved by the board of trustees last friday according to john woltjen university vice presi dent and treasurer and board of trus tees secretary also announced at the monthly meet ing were plans for renovating taylor hall and the physics building and con verting the currently unused centennial school into a storage building for many of the university's library books this go ahead in the proposed mart addition plan also allows paul franz vice president of development to offi cially raise funds for its construction according to john tarduna 83 forum representative to the board of trustees the cost of the addition is esti mated at 11.5 million in 1984 the year presently slated for groundbreaking to begin these new plans will be drawn in a more detailed fashion . . . with a more precise layout than previous designs woltjen said adding that the plan's ulti mate completion is a long way off despite being in the final stage of the pro ject's design woltjen stated that the primary obsta cle to be hurdled was that of funding he explained that unless the university is sure that the project is adequately sub sidized the trustees will not give their final approval to begin construction of the addition in order to avoid jeopard izing the university's cash flow and financial position pivotal in this problem are the univer sity's other proposed renovations and additions currently taylor hall's reno vation costs are projected at 1.5 million and the physics building's general upgrading and alterations including the construction of an auditorium are esti mated at 3 million the trustees already have approved the allotment of 50,000 to assess the feasibility of the physics buildings changes in addition the trustees are appropriating 75,000 from the reserve for future appropriations to convert a large portion of the centennial school into a temperature and humidity con trolled storage house for university library books woltjen said that whether or not all these plans are carried out relies heavily upon the funding the university receives from outside sources according to tar duno the university is not certain all the expenses can be sufficiently covered by its funding drives this is where alterna tive means of financing come in includ ing the potential sale of portions of the rare book collection ' university sculptures stolen from maginnes hall gallery by jennifer wilson twenty-three pieces of pre-columbian mexican sculpture were stolen from their maginnes hall display cases some time between 8 p.m sunday and 6:30 am yesterday morning according to campus police chief eugene dax the collection valued at 16,000 by a university spokesman and at 20,000 by bethlehem city police officer james ammend had been donated to the uni versity's permanent collection by john langerman 65 und was on display in the dubois gallery since sept 4 yester day was the exhibits last scheduled day according to dax allied maintenance employees discovered at about 6 32 a.m that an exhibit on the main floor of maginnes had been tampered with and contacted campus police campus police entered the building through the main doors and found the two wall cases broken one floor model broken into and the other three pried open said campus police officer edward shupp according to l)ax the northwest door of the main floor had been tampered with so as to prevent its locking someone had taped the bar so it wouldn't lock that may possibly have been the way in and out " he explained campus police photographed the area and lifted several good fingerprints .' according to dax who added ammend was called in because we wanted to get a quick response to getting information out to all police departments in the uni ted states ammend said he was able to put a des cription of each piece out on the national these two pieces of pre-columbian mexican sculpture above along with 26 others valued at between 16,000 and 20,000 were stolen from maginnes hall sometime sunday night or monday morning below a student views the damage done to two display cases assassination no surprise for university professors by marybeth edelen the assassination of egyptian presi dent anwar sadat on tuesday was aptly termed an act of infamy by president ronald reagan but it was not a total surprise to middle east scholars and experts oles smolansky professor of interna tional relations said sadat was assassi nated because he moved too far too fast without bringing his people along with him sadat moved too far in the arena of foreign affairs and too fast in domestic policy he explained while it is difficult to separate foreign from domestic policy when talking about middle eastern countries sadat's domestic policy and his resulting unpop ularity amongst his people were the most • dominant reasons for jiis assassination smolansky said smolansky gave the following major reasons for sadat's unpopularity with the egyptian people his inability to resolve the enormous social and eco nomic problems of egypt his unwilling ness to stamp out corruption which has permeated the upper strata of egyptian society and resentment by the poor masses and religious egyptians to creeping westernization the egyptian people's objections to creeping westernization encom passes three things smolansky said first they oppose the use of western ways to deal with economic problems especially the heavy influx of private capital and its subsequent use in projects of no direct benefit to the ordinary egyp tian citizen he explained second they denounce sadat's accep tance of western morals and customs which the broad masses consider to be in violation of basic islamic religious prin ciples and beliefs smolansky indicated finally sadat's critics claim that his pro-western foreign policy removed egypt from its traditional arena of politi cal activity as the head of the arab world and instead made it the tail of the west smolansky said leonard grahm assistant director of the united nations relief agency for palestinian refugees commented that he sadat broke the illusion and dream the arabs had of the united arab nation and many of his people hated him for that too according to the morning call in short sadat was at the helm of egypt for loyears and didn't manage to convince most
