principaj speaker of the evening was mr h p liversiege assistant to the man ager of the philadelphia electric co and his talk on electrical or ganization was extremely interest ing a move is on foot to have our student branch of the american in stitute of electrical engineers af filiate with the local branch of the lehigh valley and mr brooks oi the bethlehem steel co was pres ent to bring this matter to the at tention of the meeting it was de cided to communicate with mr hutchinson general secretary of the institute and obtain particulars concerning this prospective affilia tions continued on page three mr liversiege was introduced by j m skillman who was acting president during r c hicks ab sence he opened his talk by say ing that we were going through a period of training but soon we would get real schooling by experi ence and hard knocks all good managers should have a certain amount of experience in all classes of electrical work one of the most valuable types of experience is in the handling of labor and the control of workers good man agers should know what their men are thinking of and what their de sires are and this can only be learn ed through close association with the workers contented employees are essential ' to a smooth-running organization and their comfort should be carefully watched over rules and conditions of rifle club matches one of lehiigto's recent graduates was the speaker at the mechanical engineering society meeting on thursday night he was cardin 19 who is employed by the bethle hem shipbuilding corporation and has had quite a little experience since his graduation in the installa tion of the engines and boilers of a ship mr cardin chose as his sub ject the construction and installa tion of power plants in ships and covered it very thoroughly in the limited time allowed him the fol lowing is a summary of his re marks : when a firm wants a ship built they adjyertise for bids giving the specifications for the kind of vessel they desire the size will depend on the cargo it is to carry and the depth of channels and harbors which it will enter the speed de pends also on the cargo ; whether it is perishable like fruit or whether it consists of oil coal or other non perishable products the speed is often a question of economy as a fast boat is more expensive to run than a slow one and the extra speed in some cases is of no benefit to the ~ ! e operating it the bid is usually awarded to the lowest bidder if it represents a re liable builder and work on the boat is begun first drawings are made of the hull and machinery and af ter these designs have been approv ed the actual construction is started the boilers occupying so much space and being so important a part of the ship are carefully planned their length diameter square feet of seating surface and weight are items taken into account the base price of steel is about 2.65 cents per pound and with the present size of boilers brings the total cost to 19,000 per boiler after the shell of the boiler has been constructed the combustion chambers are placed inside three or four being the average number per boiler the heads are then ri vetted on the students present to hear new jersey zinc co repre sentative speak on friday evening at 7 30 the regular meeting of the chemical society was held itn the chemistry lecture room r d billinger was in charge of the meeting due to the absence of the president he an nounced that at the next meeting which will be sometime in february a number of student papers on in dustrial disease will be read a short business session was then held at the close of which chairman bil linger asked dr ullman to make a few remarks and to introduce the speaker of the evening dr.ullman spoke briefly stating that he had asked mr green of the new jersey zinc co to give the so ciety a talk on microscopy and since the subject presented such a large field he did not know exactly what phase of the subject mr green would choose but he knew that mr green would have a very ' interest ing talk mr green then took the floor and reiterated the fact that the sub ject of microscopy covered a very large field but that he had come to give the society a talk on the mi croscope at the begin ning of his talk he pointed out the fact that every one who is engaged in chemical work must sooner or later make use of the microscopy and that it was up to every student and use of the microscope as soon as possible there are two fundamental uses of the microscope — one to magnify and the other the real use to re solve he then went on to des cribe the different parts of the mi croscope and the function of each stating that in order to use the mi croscope efficiently everybody should understand the parts and functions of the microscope mr green illustrated his talk by some very fine lantern slides and further made clear the function and use of the different kinds of micros copes by diagrams on the black board his talk throughout was very in teresting and very capably handled at the close of his talk he said that he saw no reason why the subject of microscopy should not be in cluded in the curriculum and he hoped that some day it would he said that the microscope was now being used extensively in the rub ber lead and zinc plants and tint the field was still broad and there was plenty of room for everybody the meeting then adjourned and all proceeded to saucon hall where the usual eats where served on saturday west point defeat ed lehigh's swimming team by the score of 39-14 this no doubt is a surprise to lehigh men since rum ors were afloat that the army would easily be defeated inferring that the cadets had a fairly weak team however the reverse is true the academy was represent ed by an exceptionally fast team and one that will give much concern to all its future opponents west point was strong in the dashes 50 100 220 yards and cap tured both first and second places in all of these events the maim surprise as far as le high is concerned lies in the fact that arner lehigh won the plunge with 60 feet linen arner has been steadily improving all season and it is quite a distinction for him regad who won the plunge last week at rutgers came in second at present this is lehigh's best de partment but the men in the other events are working hard and con sistently improving the relay was won by the army in the time of 1 57 4-5 this ap parently is poor time but is account edj for by the fact that the course instead of being 600 feet long was 640 feet in length in the dive straub lehigh was runner-up for first place which was worn by longwell army both gave a very good exhibition of fancy diving and were accorded much applause the event was very close and it wasn't until it was finished that one really could tell who won altho beaten by west point it is no discredit and in the past two meets much valuable experience has been gained which will make lehigh's mermen a team which will have to be considered as the team has much good material although somewhat green arid inexperienced the next meet will be with stev ens at hoboken on feb sth and the week after lehigh faces am herst at bethdehem feb 12 am herst on saturday beat harvard by about 30 points this meet should be very interesting summary of the meet : 50-yard dash — wort by goodman army second timberlake army benzoni the star forward scoring at odd times from the middle of the floor kept pace with the brown and white five and at the begin ning of the second half overcame a six-point lead and forged ahead by two points a time out was called by the lehigh team during which tmne they regained their confidence and went back into the game took the lead after a long goal by w springsteen and then were never headed the game was close and interest ing throughout as both teams were fighting their hardest to get or keep the lead the rutgers quintet took the lead right from the start when benzoni dropped in two pretty long field goals from the center of the court this was soon tied how ever by lingle who scored twice from the foul mark and then regis tered a goal equal to those of ben zoni's then the score see sawed back forth on fouls until spring steen broke through the crowd and scored a pretty goal from under the basket lees , scored a long goal and springsteen added two more points from the side benzoni scored again from the middle of the floor but lingle and lees both scored again bringing the score to 16-11 as the whistle blew for the first half rutgers started the second half with a rush and before the lehigh team could find itself they had forged ahead on four field goal's divided between benzoni and enan der w springsteen came to the rescue again with a two-pointer deadlocking the score at 20 the referee detected a double foul on rutgers and lingle scored both points then a series of beautiful passes by the lehigh men enabled lees to scoot under the basket and score a pretty double-decker ein ander and benzoni cut the lead with field goals only to have it made up by lingle who was get ting under the basket with about two minutes to go the score stood at 28-26 in lehigh's favor lingle scored from the foul mark only to have it duplicated by benzoni lin gle scored another foul and then maurer carrying the ball under the basket shot one of the most diffi cult and beautiful baskets of the evening giving lehigh the neces sary lead to win lingle led the lehigh team in field goals with four while lees and w springsteen each registered three maurer secured the other goal coming to lehigh benzoni was the leading scorer of the game caging seven field goals and five fouls for a total of 19 points some of benrzoni's goals were excellent the majority of which was held in drown hall under the auspices of the y m c a the principal speaker was dr g h ashley state geologist of pennsylvania and a man naturally known in his chos en field his subject science and religion — the challenge of facts was unusual and all who attended were much impressed with dr ashley's knowledge and effective ness as a speaker the meeting opened with a hymn jesus is calling and two flute continued on page three last friday evening the st paul's society of lehigh univer sity held a dance in the parish house of the nativity church 3rd and wyandotte sts at which the girls of bishopthorpe manor were the guests for the last few years the st paul's society has held these dances regularly until now it is ob served as an annual affair and one that is looked forward to by the members of the society as well as by many other students of the uni versity as promising a very enjoy able evening the dance last friday evening was by no means an exception to the general rule a large number of the bishopthorpe girls were present and everyone that came spent a very enjoyable evening a large delegation of members as well as many visitors were also present the music was of the best making things lively till the last dance was over at 11 o'clock refreshments were served adding to the many pleasures of the evening the college dance held satur day night in 1 drown hall was a big success from beginning to end despite the inclement weather the dance was well attended music was furnished by the jazzland novelty six which added greatly to the success of the evening the dance saturday night was the last dance to be held in drown hall un til after the mid-year examinations but early in the second term they will be continued and good music is to be provided on every occasion howard bunn chairman of the dance committee deserves great credit for the capable way in which he has run the dances this year below is printed the rules and conditions governing the rifle match between the teams of the le high and georgetown r o t c units the results of this match have not been heard but in order to have a successful team the best shots of the unit must be doing the shooting and no one can be cer tain of this unless every man has come out and tried his skill this is a college activity a chance to represent it on a team against other universities all men who desire to compete are requested to report to lieut graham conditions of the match eligibility — open to teams made up of students regularly enrolled in the r 3 t c units maintained at the two universities teams — five to fifteen compet itors — the five high scores to count as team record distances so feet from muzzle of rifle to target number of shots — the match will consist of two sighting shots and ten shots for record fired by each member target the n r a six-bull 50-foot gallery target each com petitor will fire two sighting shots at the sighting bull and two shots for record on each of five bulls page four lehigh opened the wrestling sea son with a creditable victory over the university of west virginia on saturday afternoon in taylor gym winning by the score of 21-8 the bouts were hotly contested and all except one were won on decis ion roy succeeded in throwing his opponent with a head buttock in two minutes and five seconds scoring the only fall of the after noon ini the 135-pound class thompson of lehigh and s har rick fought through the 9-mimute period to a draw thompson lack ing only four seconds for a decis ion in the first pf the two extra periods thompson succeeded in holding his man to the mat for practically the entire three minutes and in the second period got on his feet in a little over a minute he was awarded the decision with an advantage of 1 minute 15 sec in the 125-pound class hough of west virginia a veteran at the game and the mountaineer's star performer held myers to the mat for a decision but was unable to gain a fall myers put up a good fight but was unable to get on top hough was a wrestler of quite some fame while serving mi the navy and had the reputation of never having lost a bout probably the closest match of the afternoon was in the heavyweight department where j harrick the mountaineer's husky footballer won a decision on carlisle harrick had a big advantage in weight and carlisle was interested mainly in keeping away from the big boy toward the end of the bout how ever harrick secured a body hold and threw his opponent heavily to the mat carlisle fought gamely but had no chance of working out of the hold finally the time keeper called time but the referee did not hear and four or five sec onds after tapped harrick on the shoulder awarding him a fall the nine minutes were over before the referee gave the signal for the fall so the award was revoked and harrick had to be content with a decision the meet was thoroughly inter esting and the browm and white team showed promise of develop ing into a winning squad the fact that west virginia won from ohio state on the previous saturday by the score of 20-13 nrtakes the show ing of coach sheridan's 1 men even more creditable the results :: — • quite a large crowd of page four lehigh opened the wrestling sea son with a creditable victory over the university of west virginia on saturday afternoon in taylor gym winning by the score of 21-8 the bouts were hotly contested and all except one were won on decis ion roy succeeded in throwing his opponent with a head buttock in two minutes and five seconds scoring the only fall of the after noon ini the 135-pound class thompson of lehigh and s har rick fought through the 9-mimute period to a draw thompson lack ing only four seconds for a decis ion in the first pf the two extra periods thompson succeeded in holding his man to the mat for practically the entire three minutes and in the second period got on his feet in a little over a minute he was awarded the decision with an advantage of 1 minute 15 sec in the 125-pound class hough of west virginia a veteran at the game and the mountaineer's star performer held myers to the mat for a decision but was unable to gain a fall myers put up a good fight but was unable to get on top hough was a wrestler of quite some fame while serving mi the navy and had the reputation of never having lost a bout probably the closest match of the afternoon was in the heavyweight department where j harrick the mountaineer's husky footballer won a decision on carlisle harrick had a big advantage in weight and carlisle was interested mainly in keeping away from the big boy toward the end of the bout how ever harrick secured a body hold and threw his opponent heavily to the mat carlisle fought gamely but had no chance of working out of the hold finally the time keeper called time but the referee did not hear and four or five sec onds after tapped harrick on the shoulder awarding him a fall the nine minutes were over before the referee gave the signal for the fall so the award was revoked and harrick had to be content with a decision the meet was thoroughly inter esting and the browm and white team showed promise of develop ing into a winning squad the fact that west virginia won from ohio state on the previous saturday by the score of 20-13 nrtakes the show ing of coach sheridan's 1 men even more creditable the results :: — • quite a large crowd of
