tenta tively as the first regular visit after an hour of surgical movies on facial deformities and their corrections and skin grafting the first in a series of onthlym presen tations refreshments were be ing used on several war production and testing projects that are straining the capacity of the lab vol li no 4 bethlehem pa wednesday july 21 1943 price — 5 cents first dance of summer this week all freshmen are expected to attend the freshman rally to be held at 7:30 tonight in packard laboratory sponsored by cyanide the purpose of the rally is to acquaint new students with various phases of lehigh life a function which has formerly been per formed during freshman week at the beginning of school frosh be at cyanide's rally in packard lab jack doxsey will explain the various student publications and their place on the campus eb caraway business manager of the department of athletics will give a talk on the various teams which represent lehigh on the fields and point out lehigh's position in the intercollegiate athletics of the east bernie egan will point out the value of the various musical or continued on page 4 to explain activities dr claude g beardslee will be the first to speak welcoming the freshman class to lehigh as a body for the first time phil berg president of interfraternity coun cil will speak on arcadia and the general aspects of student govern ment ted peters will explain functions performed by the var ious honorary societies which op erate on the campus the qualifi cations for membership to odk cyanide the newtonian society and others will be outlined the freshman class will receive their official introduction to lehigh life tonight at 7:30 in packard auditorium from cyanide junior honorary activities society fritz yon bergen acting chairman of the organization will act as mas ter of ceremonies and introduce the speakers cyanide to acquaint new men with lehigh frosh rally is scheduled for tonight war production research share fritz lab spotlight by jack doxsey even though it is at present hard pressed to fulfill its war-produc tion contracts fritz lab has in the past year completed from twelve to fifteen outside research projects for private contractors as each of these jobs are entirely different they all require separate techniques and as bob mains testing engineer in charge of the lab states it's a case of by guess and by god some of the times several features of a complete testing laboratory are missing from the equipment of fritz lab and this only tends to complicate the methods used for instance there is no low or high temperature controls and the humidity of the building cannot be controlled the lab is not equipped for plastic work but other than this the only limitations are the strength of the machines and the ingenuity of the men who make the tests perhaps one of the most inter esting projects undertaken by the lab was a test of brick cement un der bending conditions the tests required that the bricks be heated before they were tested the test ing engineers finally figured out a special technique that has probab ly never been used before they heated the bricks in the williams hall furnaces put them in some insulation and rushed them down the hill to fritz lab in wheelbar rows where they were tested at the proper temperatures steel sends specimens the bethlehem steel company had fritz lab test the crushing strength of south american iron ore specimens so that if they ever set up operations in that contin ent they would know what type of ore crushers they would need the open web steel web joists that were used in the reconstruction of the chi psi lodge were tested and approved in fritz lab mains told of lending machines to the american parachute company so that they could test the various parts of a parachute that are strained when in use certain hy draulic tests were run for the city of bethlehem when they were planning their wild creek project which at present supplies beth lehem with its water supply mains believes that tests run last year on re-enforced pre stressed concrete beams were the first to show failure through the continued on page 4 astp men invited girls to be provided ralph a evans eng phys 45x president of the town council re cently announced final details for the council's record dance to be held saturday july 24 from 9 un til 1 in drown hall students may secure tickets anytime at either the arcadia office or the supply bureau at 50c per couple includ ing tax town men in good stand ing will receive their tickets free of charge upon presentation of their membership cards the council has invited any astp men stationed on the cam pus to attend these men may bring their own dates or the home service and hospitality commit tee of the bethlehem uso mrs john m gross chairwoman will supply junior hostesses for them to escort colonel fay w brabson com manding officer of the astp men has stated that there will be a special dispensation so that men attending the dance will be allow ed to remain away from barracks saturday night until thirty minutes after the close of the dance all soldiers who have not as yet registered for the dance and who desire to come are urged to contact lieutenant foster taylor hall first summer dance this dance is the first social function of the summer semester which has been opened to astp trainees and it is also the first time that uso hostesses have ap peared on the lehigh campus the chaperones of the affair are dr and mrs claude g beardslee and captain and mrs samuel pierce the concession for soft drinks has been awarded to w j sturgis e e 46x members of the dance commit tee of the town council include robert balla m e 46x lewis hill m e 44x robert ramsdell arts 44 and don shettel ch e 46x chairman two sound films on the chinese resistance to japanese aggression will be shown at 3 o'clock on fri day afternoon july 23 1943 in packard auditorium these war films show actual scenes from the battle fronts and the home fronts in china china — first to fight opens in modern china shows ad vances under the present regime — modern cities and modern methods that were coming to china before the invasion then follows the story of japanese aggression and wanton destruction of most of this modernization the great migration of millions of chinese refugees to west china and the moving upon the backs of men the equipment of universities and the machinery of factories relief work supported by contributions from the united states is also depicted western front tells of china's heroic defense and pic tures her need for help it shows how america in her effort as the arsenal for democracy to arm europe prior to pearl harbor tend ed to neglect her western front the film contains remarkable pho tographs of the actual fighting in china of the bombings and great fires in chungking and it stresses the needs of the chinese civilian population this will probably be the only showing of these films in bethle hem the showing is open to the citizens of bethlehem and college students without charge chinese war films coming army enlistment age lowered to 17 lehigh students 17 years of age can enlist in the united states army in the unassigned classifi cation if they wish according to word received by dean wray h congdon this week seventeen - year - olds enlisting would remain on an inactive sta tus until their eighteenth birthday at that time if it is ascertained that they are currently attending college hey will be deferred from call to active duty until they have completed the college term for which they are enrolled students wishing to enlist may do so at the armed forces induction station in allentown or at similar stations in or near their home towns students seeking further information may see dean cong don language students study german life the roster for the german area language group of the astp has been released the schedule for this group includes six hours of german grammar four hours of world affairs three hours of the geography of germany three hours of the government of germany three hours of german livelihood ten hours of german language conversation one hour of language quiz two hours of military theory one hour each of military drill and rifle marksmanship six hours of physical education and six hours of supervised study from the looks of this schedule it seems that the german lan guage group has tough work ahead of them medical societies plan for summer alpha delta epsilon honorary pre-medical society and the r w hall society held a combined or ganization meeting last monday brown & white lehigh university dean advises living groups remaining members of frater nities in whose houses non-mem ber students are living are fully responsible for the activities and conduct of the entire group states dean wray h congdon in a receni letter to living group council heads even though the members of the host organization are in the minority such mixed groups of students are expected to exercise the same functions of a responsible and self-governnig living group as it would if the living group were made up entirely of members oi one fraternity from this it is presumed thai such groups are expected to func tion as a single group in the hold ing of dances athletic competition and student discipline favors student government the dean also sated the view that the various living group councils should function as long as possible in the three sections oi fraternity dormitory and towr as before the interfraternitj council could consist of any groups of fraternity members still func tioning as a fraternity even on s skeleton organization the inter dormitory council could unite students from price hall delta sigma phi and non-fraternitj men living in campus houses whc wish representation the town council could functior as previously in organizing towr men and could include non-mem bers living in off-campus frater nity houses who would ask affilia tion resolution of odk resolved that odk recognizes the uncertainty and unrest in the minds of many undergraduates and appreciates the impossi bility of maintaining the specific and immediate objectives of nor mal university life we believe patriotism and self-interest demand the very best academic work of which a student is
