the war-production program 3a — man with child or chil dren deferred by reason of maintaining bona fide family relationship 3b — formerly deferred by reason of dependency and activity 4d — minister of religion or divinity student 4f physically unfit of those already classified 16 are in ia 4 are in ic 216 have 2 a classifications and 21 are in 28 in addition to these 7 men are in group 3a and 3 men mem bers who could not come to last week's rehearsal will be welcome and in fact are urged to try-out only four a s t p men came to the initial try outs it is under stood that there are other a s t p men interested since it seems that it will be virtually impossible to find a rehearsal time that will be convenient for both civilian students and a s t p cadets a special rehearsal time may be ar ranged for an a s t p chorus if enough men show interest neville perfects new bristle after six years of research half of fraternities are open at present plans for a dance by the end of august were discussed at the first meeting of the interfraternity council last monday evening in drown hall the admission charge was fixed at 2.20 per couple the officers of the council will serve as the dance committee details of the affair will be planned in the near future the election of officers for next september was considered since only one officer will be returning it was urged that fraternities find brothers in the a s t p and promote better friendship between the a s t p and college stu dents many problems discussed arcadia's financial position is unsettled according to charles c hilton president and a possible loan by the interfraternity coun cil to arcadia may be granted to keep it going the committee to investigate this loan includes rob ert l smith william bloecher and john donahue smith was granted permission to revise the accounting methods used by the committee the council also voted to appropriate charms for each house representative the problem of moving frater nity men to off campus houses was brought up and questionnaires will be sent out to the various living groups the men chosen to handle this are e lyster frost bill mengel william b tilghman and charles r conklin jr the present officers are philip j berg president q john schwarz vice-president hilton secretary and smith treasurer no business as usual at a recent survey made by the interfraternity council it was dis covered that only 2 of a total of 29 fraternities are operating ac cording to pre-war custom it was revealed also that only half of the houses are open and that these for the most part have become rooming houses for incom ing freshmen and refugees from the dorms in normal times frat ernities accounted for about half of the students but now their com bined roster makes up only one fifth council plans dance for the end of august dr earl l crum professor and head of the department of greek has received a captaincy in the u s army and will leave lehigh to go to the provost-marshall gen eral's school at fort custer mich igan july 21 he will be stationed there for a month and then trans ferred to some other location dr crum served overseas in 1918-19 as a ist lieutenant and spent two years in france after the war in reconstruction work 1943 marks dr crum's 15th year on the lehigh campus with his departure greek will probably be dropped from the roster of studies for the duration in july 1935 professor crum visited portugal to study the his tory and architecture of that country to supplement a trip to portugal in the summer of 1932 during these trips he took over 800 pictures relative to his study of architecture previous to his portugal sojourn professor crum conducted courses on a mediter ranean education cruise his wife president of the local american association of univer sity women will remain in beth lehem during professor crum's absence crum made army captain ted peters elected president of society omicron delta kappa senior ac tivities honorary is investigating a proposal of sponsoring a series of sunday concerts or sings to be given for military and civilian students the society met last wednesday evening in the arca dia room plans call for the series to be gin sunday july 25 with a con cert by the university band pos sibly to be followed by glee club concerts musical recitals and group sings girls of the moravian college triple trio may join with the lehigh glee club in another concert election of new members will take place as usual this summer though only one election will be held this semester elections will not be based on a point system but men will be judged by lists of their activities submitted the exact number of men to be taken has not been decided first-semester seniors and sec ond-semester held in the arcadia room enlistees — obtain personnel sheets town men plan dance next week both the army and the navy have urged that whenever college students go into service they should take with them not only a transcript of their college record but also a record with general per sonnel data the american coun cil on education together with the representatives from the army and the navy worked out a per sonnel sheet and forwarded it to various colleges and universities if and when a civilian student reports for military service at any time he should take one of these personnel sheets with him to pre sent to the interviewing officer in anticipation of this each continued on page 3 cyanide will hold freshman rally cyanide junior honorary activi ties society is making plans for a freshman rally to be held on wednesday night july 21 at 7:30 the plans are not definite as yet but it is hoped that the necessary arrangements can be made formerly the rally has been a recognized part of freshman week and it is important that it be held this year despite the difficulties the more vital material presented during ' the old freshman week will be concentrated in this meet ing since all the officers of cyanide have left the university since the election the society has no officers at this time no election is plan ned for the summer because there are only four members in all but fritz developed at lehigh research laboratories was recently announced in full page color advertisement in time fortune and modern plastics magazines by the hercules powder company supplier of chemicals used in the manufacture of the bristles chemistry's child as the advertisement calls it is the result of six years of research work done h v t r harupv a impviii vipoh nf the chemistry department with the assistance of dr thomas g harris dr william c forbes james n moses and moulton d phelps all graduate students at the time research on the bristle had been completed and manufac ture by the devoe-raynolds com pany started approximately a year ago but the company never allow ed any publicity to be given to the new product until very recently neville outdoes pigs the original reason for the de velopment of the bristle was a the town council will sponsor a record dance saturday july 24 from 9 until 11 on the upper floor of drown hall according to ralph a evans eng phys 45x coun cil
