uni versity's book collection were among those found by fbi agents m a bethle hem storage locker rented by james richard shinn according to special agent for the fbi bill jones shinn is currently being held m federal custody jones said the university books identified two bound volumes of national geographic from the 1800s were found among approximately 400 rare books m 16 foot lockers and five suitcases in january we did receive informa tion that suitcases and footlockers were m a storage facility m bethlehem according to jones who would not reveal the source of this information on jan 15 we executed the search warrant he said along with the books that were reco vered the fbi seized is evidence a gauss meter and various lock-picking devices jones said the gauss meter is an instrument used to remove mag netic properties from books wheneverhe encountered them jones added other devices used to neutralize burglar detection systems were also found he said at this time we're still m the process of typing out the inventory of all of the hooks that were recovered jones said in addition to the two volumes from the university collection that has been iden tified more may be involved within the next couple of weeks all books will have been inventoried jones said ■the majority of the books fall into a category such as travel and nature warm inside b&w phoiodv tami schcrlri what a place to be stranded . mart library resembled a prison fur those who found their cars sturk on snowy packer avenue after the last storm 25 companies pledge 800,000 to cad/cam by george gabuzda pledges to the university for research and development totaling over 800,000 have been made public since the end of the fall semester the pledges made by evaraj major corporations and founda tions are to go to various departments of the university according to the univer sity's office of public information more than half the money was pledged for the university's computer-aided design/manufacturing program cad cam which is to receive four grants totaling 457,500 the tektronix foundation and tek tronix inc of bcaverton ore made a commitment of 207,500 for laboratory renovations graduate student support equipment and participation m the uni versity's cad/cam industrial affiliates program the westinghouse educational foun dation of pittsburgh has granted cad cam 100,000 to be paid over a three-year period beginning m 1982 dow chemical u.s.a of midland mich and western electric have pledged 50,000 and 100,000 respectively to cad/cam currently , there are more than 25 comp anies lending financial support to the cad/cam program 12 of which have never previously given to the university according to michael bolton director of development who added that any time we can get 12 new i nn ipan ies lh.it ■• tin accomplishment the university was also selected by the elxxon foundat ion to receive 150 000 over the next five years for fellowships and faculty assistance m chemical engi neering the grant is part of a nation wide program distributing 15 million to help colleges and universities deal with faculty shortages the giants are intended to support high-quality american students on their way to a ph.d said leonard wenzel head of the university's chemical engin eering department the people who are teaching m the academic world are highly competent and available to work m other areas " he said overthe last few years indus try has outbid the universities and the only way to compete is by raising salaries wenzel noted that besides the univer sities corporations are unhappy about this trend since they depend on hiring many employees with bachelor's degrees he said exxon's grant is only an intelligent way to insure its own future two challenge grants of 100,000 each were pledged by the william and flora hewlett foundation and the andrew mellon foundation to be used as a presi dential discretionary fund this money combined with matching funds to be raised by the university on a 3 to 1 basis over three years will create a total endowment of 800,000 university president deming lewis has said the money will be used primar ily for faculty and curricular development the sarah scaife foundation of pitts burgh has made a 15,000 grant to help support research being conducted through the fairchild-martindale cen ter for the study of private enterprise at the university the grant will assist m the center's study of state and local government pen sion funds m pennsylvania results of which will be made available m a report to state legislators local government officials and interested citizens conducting the study are j richard aronson professor of economics and director of the fairchild-martindale center eli schwartz professor and chairman of the department of econom ics and vincent munlcy assistant pro mart model ib&w phdlu by tami schfber a new entrance to the university is part of the plans for the mart library addition see related story page 2 residence lottery system computerized for efficiency by allysa scott several changes have been imple mented m the residence halls lottery sys tem to provide for more convenience m this semester's drawing according to kurt salsburg assistant director of res idence operations no longer will the students be required to manually pull the lottery numbers themselves m grace hall salsburg explained the forum sub committee on housing has authorized a random computer program that elimi nates the need to draw any numbers manually salsburg went on to explain that the new system requires each student to sub mit a form provided by residence oper ations m order to pursue on-campus housing for the 1982-83 year these changes were primarily made for the sake of convenience salsburg said they will eliminate the need to set up grace hall and the time it took to actually get each student down there to pull a number salsburg explained that another rea son the university has switched to a com puterized lottery system is to assure complete equity and to avoid any chance of unfairness or prejudice salsburg said although i feel the manual system was a fair one this computer will be absolutely random with no chance of a slip-up according to salsburg another change has been made m the holding of squatter's rights on residence halls apartments the new rule is that now a minimum of three people must have squatter's rights m order to hold a particular resi dence instead of the usual single person with rights to a place the feeling has been m the past he explained that it was not fair to have only one person holding a place for three or four friends and preventing others from living there we are hoping this new rule will free more apartments for everyone salsburg said that he encourages everyone to read the lehigh handbook carefully and pay close attention to the deadlines we are going to be very strict about the deadlines for this new sytem
