university case officer of the committee on discipline is investigat ing the alleged assault of a traveling companion of abbie hoffman at sigma nu fraternity on wednesday april 14 according to rebecca johnson 82 co chairman of the visiting lectures com mittee vlc . the sequence of events preceding the incident are uncertain following hoffman's lecture in packer chapel a reception was held at sigma nu toward the end of the evening hof fman's companion a woman named johanna was heard calling for help johnson said i don't know for sure that anything happened except that johanna got hit in the stomach and that abbie could not help her because he is on parole and couldn't risk a fight or an arrest " john son said johnson added that from what she understood a series of insults were exchanged between johanna and sigma nu brothers which was followed by some beer-throwing and johanna saying she had been hit trygve dahl 8.3 president of sigma nu said he believed it was not in the best interest of sigma nu to discuss the event we don't even know where we stand he said although dahl admitted an incident did take place he said he would not com ment until a decision has been made by hang em high daw rnoio oy wmh*mr hub^ti-l students were amazed wednesday to discover it was banner day for sigma chi derby days approxi mately 20 groups participated the winning group was the ten commandments whose banner was strung between packard aud and the chapel confusion arises over club budgets by lisa paparone budget packets for student organiza tions distributed earlier this semester by the dean of students office have been slow in returning for review by a club budget committee assistant dean of students roger watkins said about seven clubs did not know about the budget packet due april 5 and seven or eight ' will not be requestinga budget for the 1982-83 academic year watkins believes the situation is that student lines are not transmitting infor mation to one another . . because we realize there is a problem we're not going to penalize these groups " in previous years each club has had to submit some kind of budget to the dean of students office this year the new budget packets require a more detailed description of the organization's costs revenues activities and goals wetried to systematize the process and hold the organization more responsible wat kins said some remedies to the communications problem between the dean of students office and club officers have been pro posed faculty advisers will again be included in the communications which had been done years earlier watkins said his office will also do some spot checks by phoning watkins said it was also suggested that elections be held sometime in early march rather than later in the semester as it has been done in the past the late elections wat kins says creates a problem for the dean of students office for they are not sure which officer new or old they should contact for budget discussions for those new officers who are held responsible for their club's budget packet a budget review meeting was conducted jim o'donnell 82 an organizer for the off-campus students organization says his group is not officially a club and therefore does not have a budget though they presently are working with wat kin's office on one for next semester calling the new budget packet help ful " o'donnell says it reflects a feel for what the university wants the clubs to do santa cavaliere 83 treasurer of the marketing club prepared her club's budget request form with the help of the clubs adviser she said the new budget packet was well organized but too long a committee of members of the dean of students office and people who have worked closely with the organizations are in the process of reviewing the budget packets and assigning dollar amounts for each organization they expect to notify the groups by april 30 crash investigated the northampton county dis trict attorney's office decided tuesday to investigate the acci dent in which a 25-year-old bethle hem man was killed when his motorcycle collided with a univer sity police cruiser according to s«l kusenc ix-arn of the bethle hem police traffic division todd holland 540 montclair ave died of multiple injuries at st luke's hospital sunday uni versity police officer pedro torres 31 was not injured bethlehem police have still not released details of the accident other than that it occurred at the montclair and packer avenues intersection torres was west hound holland was southbound district magistrate john gom bosi said the investigation could lead to charges being pressed and would probably take a week fiji on social probation for conduct violation by darren mai.oney phi gamma delta fiji i fraternity has been banned from holding open parties until the end of next semester because pi an incident in which two bethlehem women were thrown into a pool at the fraternity in a meeting of the university com mittee on discipline last monday fiji was charged w it h violating the universi ty's code of conduct by forceably throw ing two persons in a pool and violating laws of pennsylvania on campus bj damaging their clothes the incident happened march 6 at fiji's annual ft lauderdale party the party was supposed to be closed and proper attire was required fiji presi dent gary.trezssa 83 said according to trezza the two who knew nobody at fiji came in early were thrown in and left immediately at the time they didn t eem to be highly upset trezza claims late trezza said he was called to come i the university police office where was charged with criminal mischiel and disorderly conduct however in charging trezza and not the corporate entity of the fraternity the university police eommitteed a procedu ral error hence when the case was to go to the district magistrate charges were dropped chiel i campus police kugene dax said we made a slight error in proce dure we arrested tre/.zai for some thing the law says we must arrest the corporation for so we rescinded every thing . . . we could have brought charges against the whole house but we didn't case officer of the committee on disci pline dean robert cohen said that the fact the case did not make it to court did not affect the disciplinary sanctions which beside the party ban also include a letter of apology to the women and rep aration for any clothing damage what happened downtown had no bearing on the decision " cohen said there was enough evidence from the women to warrant a committee hear ing he added trezza also claims that the two women were talked into pressing charges by the campus police further he claims that according to a police report the police gave the women a composite book and they accused a brother of throwing them in the pool who was not even at the party dax said i never heard anything about either the coercion or the composite " cohen refused to comment on anything that happened during the closed discipli nary meeting but he stated the women involved were very willing to tes tify in their own behalf also they fiji pleaded guilty to all charges " forum officers chosen this week 3 run unopposed during the forum meeting held wed nesday prolessor donald ryan profcs sor il geology and john tarduno 83 were elected co-chairman of forum xiii and lynn miller 85 was elected as secretary-treasurer all three ran unopposed also elected at ihe meeting were faculty trustee representatives profes sors robert barnes and john wood and student trustee representatives lisa fisher 83 and ken foster 84 ballots will be sent out next week to all forum xiii members to elect student educational policy representatives chairmen of the four forum standing committees will be chosen at committee meetings prior to the forum xiii meet ing on thursday we need more faculty involvement tarduno said there is a real need to have the students and faculty working together if we have a lack of faculty interest it kind of defeats the whole purpose tarduno said he liked the idea of hav ing co-chairmen lead the forum because it worked well for the forum subcommit tees that used them and it sort of puts students and faculty on an even par see fraternity page 6
