mermen on trip to west point vol xxxvii no 28 lacrosse league convenes at new york five faces next important game talk on ports and terminals greatly appreciated by large audience dr r.s macelwee speaks before civils price five cents five too weak for army rutgers to meet brown and white in taylor gym tomorrow night game starts at 7:30 p m new jerseyites have defeated hopkins 23-13 but lost to navy 38-13 initial match with west virginia tomorrow afternoon — this is first year for w va expect to make good showing in army pool close contest predicted lehigh outplayed throughout entire contest — score 11-3 first half lehigh schedule decided upon one open date remains — reforms introduced final tally 33-14 brown and white handicapped by absence of frain and maurer in line-up this afternoon the swimming team will leave for west point as this is the first time lehigh has ever met the west point mermen much interest has been aroused as to the outcome because although too early to judge west point is reputed to have a fast team the squad will arrive at west point in the early evening and will be entertained later at a dance on saturday afternoon the meet will take place and although not over confident the squad expects to re turn home victorious the men have been training very hard during the week correcting errors made in the rutgers meet and practicing new strokes so that they will enter the tank at west point ready for action the trials have been run off dur ing the week and it is almost a cer tainty that the men who competed against rutgers last saturday will again represent lehigh these men are vannort gangewere 50 yard schaeffer and poor 100 yards jacobs and schaeffer 220 yards arner and regad plunge straub dive jacobs gangewere davis and vannort relay state geologist will speak on sunday this saturday the basketball team plays its first important game of the season on the home floor when rutgers will be met so far this season the more important games have been played away which probably has to do with the several defeats sustained although losing to lafayette last saturday the game was close and lafayette's margin of three points does not represent any superiority over the brown and white but rather a better knowledge of their home floor this court was un usual in shape being long and nar row the work of lehigh in this game was good the guarding in particular being close the squad gives evidence of having perfected team work and saturday's game should bring out some good basket ball rutgers will bring a team which is said to be fairly strong in spite of a one-sided defeat by the navy the star player of last year's strong team french is missing but his place is filled by another player of a good deal of ability this for ward is benzoni who scored all of the team's points against the navy and has al'so done well in othei games dormani a guard is also playing well 1 he rutgers team has not played many games to date on a of men from the oth er course societies and many of the faculty were entertained by a most eruhghiteniinig talk on ports and terminals by dr r s macel wee director of the bureau of foreign and domestic commerce a member of the association of port authorities and of the association of terminal engineers and form erly a professor of economics at columbia university at the regular meeting of the civil engineering society president e w bowdeni made a short speech 1 of introduction ex pressing the great appreciation with which the society welcomed dr maceiwee and thanking him for the opportunity he afforded to the members of the society by ad dressing them to obtain informa tion on such an important and in teresting subject many years of study and busi ness in the united states and in several european countries abroad have well fitted mr macelwee for the post as director of the bureau of foreign and domestic com merce after his early education mr macel'wee moved to berlin where he studied for a year and later acted as salesman for the ko dak co returning to the united states in 1903 he entered columbia university and his two successive summers were spent at the univer sity of marburg summer school having earned passage to europe and returned by acting as helper on a cattle boat in 1907 he was graduated from columbia a year ahead of his class and immediately wenit to paris as a representative of a textile company shortly there after he accepted a sales position with the international harvester co at berlin and for three years showed the people of the central unusually good and decidedly out of the ordi nary dr george h ashley state geologist of pennsylvania will be the speaker and will lecture upon the topic the challenge of facts 1 — a study io science and religion the lecture will be illustrated and a large number of slides will be shown bearing upon this subject those who attended the e m meet held some two weeks ago will re member that dr ashley spoke at that meeting on future resources of power and proved at that time just how interesting and helpful he can be dr ashley is one of the best known geologists in the coun try and is nationally known in his chosen field the special music will be taken care of by e p hartman 21 who will play a flute solo a large at tendance to meet dr ashley is earnestly desired and everyone is urged to be in drown hall at 4:15 on sunday st paulists dance the intercollegiate lacrosse cham pionship will not be an open argu ment at the close of the coming season this became apparent at the annual meeting of the intercol legiate lacrosse association held in new york on saturday afternoon when provisions were made for an annual championship series between the winners in the northern and southern halves of the league lehigh was represented at the meeting by manager g l childs and charles lattig the latter a for mer lehigh star player roy taylor of cornell was elect ed president of the league succeed ing r c campbell taylor was captain of the cornell team during his senior year and was vice-presi dent of the league last year applications tor membership were received from both navy and penn state these were referred to the executive board penn state no doubt will be accepted as soon as certain objections in regard to eligibility rules which were brought up when state made a previous ef fort to enter the league have been removed most of the meeting was devoted to a discussion of pro posed changes in the rules the executive board is empowered to make final disposition of all mat ters concerning the playing code the crescent athletic club the biggest non-collegiate power in la crosse in this country offered a trophy to be known as the cham pionship cup which is to be award ed to national title winner each spring the league was informed by fredl rubien of the amateur athletic union that its efforts to have lacrosse included in future olympics programs had met with favor here and that the proposition would be placed before the inter national olympic committee at its next meeting last year lehigh won the hon ors in the southern division and syracuse in the north in an ex hibition game on an open date earl ier in the season lehigh defeated syracuse and an effort was made to play off a game to decide the cham pionship of both divisions nego tiations for a game however fell through and the announcement that the league managers will take care of that situation in the future will no doubt be received with approval the lehigh schedule although not complete is as follows : april 2 — new york lacrosse club april 9 — open april 16 — stevens april 21 — perm state april 23 — crescent a c at brooklyn may 7 — swarthmore at swarth more pa may 21 u of p at phila pa may 28 — johns hopkins the lehigh wrestling team goes to the mat for the first meet of the season tomorrow afternoon at 3 3c o'clock when they try conclusions with the west virginia grapplers coach sheridan's men have been thoroughly primed for the meet and are prepared to give the southern ers a battle royal for the laurels following is a list of the men on the west virginia squad in all probability only those named first will be taken to lehigh for the meet the squad follows 115-pound class — stickler and lraig 135-pound class lambert emch and prove 125-pound class — hough bur dette and mcfadden 145-pound class — turkovich s harrick and j courtney 175-poumd class-mcdonald mor ris and pitseniberger 158-pound class — growe brown arad wright heavyweight class — j harrick and crowe this being the first year west virginia has ever had a wrestling team the squad lacks experience but showed strength in the opening meet last saturday night when ohio university was defeated 20-13 stickler lost the decision to mor ris of ohio in the 115-pound class the visitor clearly bad the best of the argument stickler never had any previous experience in the sport and is one of the men that coach r b dayton a lebigh maw has developed in the past six weeks scotty hough downed o'neill o in four minutes and 50 seconds when lambert was taken ill just before the bout he substituted for him lambert and threw dabritz ohio in six minutes and eight sec ond's dabritz weighed 138 pounds and hough tipped the scale at 125 pounds hough is the most experi enced man on the mountaineer squad having wrestled on the u s naval academy tea mlast season he has never been downed and on ly lost one decision in the tiabe he has been wrestling lambert of course has been un tried he was a member of coach dayton's informal squad last spring and recently won the championship of the university in a tournament turkovich is a veteran baseball player having been on the varsity mine for two seasons he was on the informal squad last will be a joint meeting of the lehigh valley section of the american society of mechanical engineers and of the lehigh and latayette student branches of the same society on tuesday jan 25 at 8 00 p m in the lecture room of the department of physics the speaker for the evening will be mr calvin s rice secretary of the a s m e who has been one of the main factors in the remark able growth of society mr rice will give a comprehensive statement regarding the federation of ameri can engineer img societies work foi national engineering societies and local engineering societies civic bodies and educational institutes a large attendance is expected as two student branches and the re cently organized lehigh valley section this is the first joint meeting of the a dance under the auspices of the st paul's society is to be given this evening in the parish house of nativity church third and wyan dotte streets the presence of the young ladies of bishopthorpe man or promises to be the main attrac tion and a large delegation of mem bers is expected dancing will start at 8 00 o'clock frosh train to beat moravian reserves the lehdgh basketball team went down to defeat at west point on wednesday afternoon when the cadets outlplayed them and won handily by the score of 33-14 the lehigh team was greatly handicap ped by the absence of frain and maurer two of the regular men frain has been on the sick list for sometime and was not in good en ough condition to make the trip maurer was only out once during the week but is expected back to get in shape for the rutgers game tomorrow the brown and white quintet was completely outplayed during the whole game and was not able to scpre a field goal until the middle of the second half the army team made a number of substitutions but the patched lehigh team could not prevent the cadets from dropping them in pretty regularly from the floor the army men got a total of 14 field goals which were secur ed by four of the team smythe led with five double deckers dabezies came next with four while french and pfeffer had three and two res pectively the army team did not start off with much speed and the game was rather close for a little while at the end of the first twenty minutes of battling army was leading by a 11-3 score although lehigh had scored all of her points by means of fouls in the second half the ca dets began to pick up and soon drew away from lehigh making sure of the winner the cadets went fast for the first part of the second half and had a big lead when the lehigh five rallied and managed to drop in three field goals before the final whistle two of the field goals were made by substi tuted men 1 , while lingle secured the other two-pointer savaria star halfback on the football team made has first appearance for lehigh in basketball this year and played very well he has only been out with the squad a few days and was one of the men who scored a field goal the other field goal was se cured by marshall who replaced lees at center in the place of maurer at for ward coleman was used and play ed a very good game although he was not able to fill the place of maurer hartung was used in frain's place and as usual played a strong game he stuck to his mani in good shape and held him down to a very few goals lingle took chances from the 15 foot mark but did not do as well as he generally does he got off to a bad start and only caged three goal 1 out of 11 chances in the first half but came back strong in the last half and scored five out of seven attempts this defeat makes the fifth one for the brown last wednesday the unit was marched over the moun tain to look over the battle ground and become accustomed to the ter rain when deployed and acting as skirmishers a problem of real warfare will be assumed and it will be the duty of the men to solve it most efficiently and nearly accord ing to hoyle or the i d r as possible the enemy will be as sumed to have landed in philadel phia and to have advanced just soutth of bethlehem with their ad vance guard on the other side of south mountain a machine gun has been located by one of our pa trols and the problem consists in capturing this gun the company that makes the best showing by the umpire's ruling will be selected to go through the tactics for the in spector who comes in the spring as each company has fallen off in numbers they will
