youngest son james earl chip carter 111 came to the lehigh valley sunday to ask local democrats for sup port m 1980 and to take the pulse of america for his father tiie 29-year-old carter has been stumping the country for his father since april appearing at events like the bethlehem democratic committee picnic on the road about 20 days a month he has visited 30 statea since april as a carter ambassador he is employed by the carter-mondale presidential committee his duties include an endless barrage of handshakes autographs kisses from the ladies and speeches which he usually keeps short but the blue jean-and-boot-clad carter took sunday's festivities m stride en during a back-slapping well-wisher who almost knocked the wind out of him another young woman who insisted that he dance with her and being force-fed peanuts by a party worker despite the loss of privacy that ac companies the job carter said he enjoys the work it's like living your fantasies now carter meets all the people he only heard about when he was a 10-year-old county campaign worker for john f kennedy m plains ga you ha veto like people to do the job he said it was obvious from sunday's picnic that carter going to run he ex pects my dad to be renominated and re elected i think so too while carter said the issues for the campaign haven't crystalized yet he said two potential issues m congress now are large grocery store univeraity students were forced to buy at the smaller and generally more ex pensive neighborhood stores tiie vacant pantry pride stores were taken over however by three other chains including food lane which recently opened a store where pantry pride once operated on broadway avenue since its opening early this sumtap food lane has done well for two reasons according to bruce robison store manager first food lane shares the good reputation of its parent company laneco robison said which is already established m the lehigh valley second robison and his staff were aided by pre-opening managerial research on the area and its needs ' business is about 30 to 40 percent better than pantry pride's was when it was m the building robison said the return of the university's student body has helped food lane as expected robison said sales are up an additional 15 to 20 percent since the end of august another new food store wawa food market has opened on the south side it's a smaller convenience-oriented store next to the senior citizens highrise according to robison wawa's opening will have very little effect on food lane's despite the unusual location of the store it faces the university making it almost unnoticeable from fourth street business is good says manager bonnie ensig since the return of the students our sales have doubled after 6 p.m ensig said they buy a lot of sandwiches and soda during this period as far as the location goes we were advised by the realtors to build m this position m order to give the shoppers a pleasant view ensig said and we're getting a new sign for the fourth street side of the store sometime this week people would rather have free parking m the lot than have to pay for it on fourth street she said commenting on whether or not the new openings will affect food sales at the bookstore edward fehr bookstore manager said wawa employs m marketing technique known as a loss leader—very low or even zero profit on one or more items simply to draw people into the store ihis week's example is the two-liter bottle of pepsi-cola fehr said the bookstore price is 1.29 but for a limited time at wawa you can buy one for 88 cents we don't have the volume to be able to do that fehr said we have limited use of the refrigerator case we lease from coca-cola so m the meantime it appears the bookstore wawa and food lane will peacefully co-exist marijuana code allows students three offenses to avoid confusion about drug policies concerning the use of marijuana m residence halls the gryphon society has adopted a three-strike disciplinary policy students caught smoking marijuana m residence halls will be issued a warning by their gryphons on the first offense on the second offense a report will be issued to the area coordinator on the third offense the student will be referred to the disciplinary committee the old policy suggested that gryphons we their discretion m deciding whether to discipline students this caused a lot of problems according to bill blier 80 gryphon society president one problem was inconsistent treatment among halls blier said a conservative gryphon might be
