lehigh university brown and white vol 91 - no 5 bethlehem pa tuesday september 18 1 79 tailgating in addition to the seniors at the annual tailgate party students everywhere joined m spreading campus cheer before saturday's game against slippery rock fall festival offers bands/games food by ed white the interfratemity council ifc will present the first annual fall festival — complete with music fun and games — all day saturday m sayre park it's basically a day of activity for the student body — not just for the greeks — on an away football-game day according to finn wentworth 80 ifc social chairman the festival begins at 10:30 a.m with an up-the-hill continental cuisine breakfast served at four stops on the way to sayre park the idea is to get people to walk through the campus up through sayre park said mike madison 80 coor dinator of the continental cuisine the breakfast will consist of a different food item served at each of the three triangles along the hill with the last course being served inside the sayre field gates at the top of the hill madison said the first stop with assorted juices and doughnuts begins at 10:30 at the triangle next to chi psi the next stop at 11:00 is for muffins and waffles m front of delta tau delta the third course french toast will be served m front of zeta psi at 11 : 30 with assorted fruits finishing the breakfast at 12:00 inside the sayre park gates several fraternities will work together serving food at each of the first three stops with the off-campus fraternities the four sororities and the fraternities whose houses are located away from the break fast route handling the last course m sayre park madison said the fraternities are encouraged to i present their flag at the triangle where they are serving food wentworth said the festival is designed to show cooper ation on the part of the greeks — to show that we're not just a bunch of beer drinking idiots wentworth had said earlier once inside the gates there is student faculty legislative body faces a problem of faculty non-participation due primarily to teaching obligations and a lack of extra curricular incentive for the faculty .' other reasons for the faculty's lack of participation include professors putting personal obligations before extra curricular activities and the faculty's desire to avoid conflicts with the adminis tration according to various forum members and william quay dean of students edward morgan assistant professor of government said between 25 and 50 percent of the faculty members appointed to the forum attend meetings regularly morgan chairman of forum x's academic environment committee said the lack of participation is not because of apathy but because faculty members find a need to differentiate between student-life issues and academic issues morgan cited visible pressures of courses research and professional development as factors inhibiting faculty involvement caryn gorbunoff 80 vice-chairman of forum x is less empathetic to the faculty's lack of participation . a lot of faculty members feel it's not part of their job she said they view their roles as teachers inside the classroom maybe they don't realize the teaching role outside the classroom m something like the forum she men tioned the faculty advisory role to fraternities as an example of outside teaching * quay said there is a reluctance on the part of younger members of the faculty who do not have tenure to spend time on the forum they think the forum will detract from other activities that would put them m a stronger position to receive tenure for a non-tenured faculty member i'm sure it's a frightening prospect to find yourself affiliated with an organization 21s-ml-4184 vandals activate showers chemistry building flooded by fred schaufeld an emergency shower on the seventh floor of the saeley g mudd building was activated by vandals over the labor day weekend causing over 2,000 m equipment damage and scattering asbestos particles on the fifth and sixth floors the asbestos dust was quickly disposed of according to tom beidler chemistry teaching assistant and member of the building's safety committee by faculty members who were called m sunday night by frederick fowkes chemistry depart ment chairman . the emergency showers are located throughout the building and are activated by pull cords they are used to rinse caustic substances from students m the event of an accident the shower which ran continuosly for approximately two hours flooded the entire seventh and half of the sixth floors with three inches of water said steven schaffer associate professor of chemistry and head of the building's safety com mittee two pieces of laboratory equipment each valued at about 1,000 were destroyed by the water in addition 40 to 50 ceiling tiles were destroyed leaving the asbestos dust from exposed ceiling griders on the fifth and sixth floors ed smauch a graduate student m chemistry called the campus police when he noticed water seeping through to the fifth floor but according to beidler there are still no suspects m the case the campus police found all the doors to the building locked after the flood he added the 7 million complex has been plagued by similar incidents but none have resulted m serious damage because the showers were quickly shut off one such incident did lead to the apprehension of several southside teenagers new security precautions will be taken to prevent future incidents beidler said the building's locks are being changed and the keys are being reauthorized graduate students are instructed to ask all unauthorized persons to leave the building after 10 p.m and to call the campus police if any problems arise undergraduates will no longer be able to use the seventh floor library without authorization after the building closes in addition campus police will now patrol the building at night schaffer said that a shut-off mechanism or a 55-gallon limit may be installed on the safety showers to avoid problems m the future a drain system was not installed when the building was constructed because it would result m an open airway to the
