lehigh university brown and white voltl h+jujß bethlehem pa friday october it lf 21s-wmis4 brodhead house residents find false alarms annoying false alarms activated by smoke from burning food forced the evacuation of brodhead house four times this semester joan mulhern residence area coor dinator in charge of brodhead said the detectors are a plus she said suite doors in the building are often closed so fires might not be noticed in time to pull a conventional fire alarm i'm very pleased with them mulhern said the inconvenience is worth it however some brodhead residents said they consider the frequent alarms a nuisance i was pretty grumpy at five in the morning one resident said most of the alarms have occurred in the late afternoon or evening but students baking cookies for a surprise party set off the early morning alarm brodhead house must be completely evacuated each time the alarm goes off though the students haven't had to stay outside too long as soon as a resident assistant or resident halls security director is sure the alarm is false residents return to the building the brodhead residents noted that this is strictly a kitchen ventilation problem you can smoke if you want one resident said but if anything you cook burns the ventilation system carries it right to the smoke detectors captain eugene dax campus police chief commented it's really a nuisance if we're busy but we're glad to see they're not real fires there's been no property damage some people have suggested that the smoke detectors be desensitized ac cording to pete herkenham 80 co director of residence halls security the smoke dec tec tors cannot and should not be densensitized the residents are more aware of the fire danger than in the average dorm herkenham said brodhead is a high-rise full of suites and can't afford to take a chance on lessening the sensitivity of the detectors he added there is a smoke detector in each kit chen and lounge area as well as in the common room of the individual suites the brodhead residents have only been outside for five minutes each time the alarm has gone off but herkenham said it could be longer of the residence security hypnotist michael novak made believers out of hypnotized more than 500 skeptics at a lecture in packard lab auditorium monday night see story page five ifc plan to paint stadium cancelled by laurence reisman the interfraternity council's ifc plan to paint taylor stadium two weeks ago was canceltoulmete the dilapidation of the stadium walls according to ken hollen 80 ifc president the university's planning and development office did not approve the plan and therefore the operation was cancelled hollen said the deterioration of the walls was too great and the university felt it would not be worth it to paint them at this point because the paint would peel shortly according to hollen the ifc had decided that saturday oct 6 would be the day for the operation joe mccarthy 81 chairman of the ifc community relations committee and coordinator of the planned painting operation said the group selected the weekend because of the warm weather the away football game at delaware and the fact that upperclass parents - weekend was the following weekend according to holien the ifc planned to paint the stadium to provide a service for the university as well as to donate proceeds to a charitable organization the ifc received an estimate from a painting contractor who said that the project would entail 1,200 in material cost and another 3,800 in man hours we would have had about 2,800 in proceeds and donated them to the united fund hollen said fraternity volunteers he added the ifc headed by mccarthy got fraternity houses to volunteer for the operation we especially wanted the pledges to help out but we wanted the brothers as well hollen said the project required 475 man hours to be completed according to the contractor's estimate hollen said he bad received university team advances inmate education analyses by jennifer wilson fifty percent of the inmates in our federal and state adult correctional facilities cannot read or write ninety percent of all inmates never completed high school eighty-five percent of them dropped out of school before their 16th birthday two-thirds of the inmates in these institutions possess no type of vocational training whatsoever if academic and vocational education is the key to success these people have struck out before they've even been up to bat no one is denying the need for correctional education programs education of prison inmates is viewed as a necessity if these people are to be expected to return to society in productive roles some headway noted and some headway in the area of correctional education has been made various programs have been studied and heir weaknesses noted but the progress seem^to have halted there that is until last year when seven members of the university's school of education went one step further these people feel that an integral part of plans aimed at improving the existing educational programs in our correctional facilities is the creation of a model program a model that will give the educational directors in these institutions a basis for com parison in what raymond bell associate professor of education and human development calls the first com prehensive synthesis of correctional education programs such a model has been found elizabeth conard instructor of human development and member of the research team explains that former studies of correctional educational programs tended to cite only weaknesses and never seemed to this university worker teems to be enjoying the f • m ♦' vlew whlle *•**»* some time off in a few weeks leisure tim campus crews wih be occupied with vacuuming up the leaves just now beginning to fall see model page « see stadium page 4 see alarms page ft inside sac resignation p 4 hypnotized p 5 spike rs win p 8 next issue the next issue of hie brown sad white will appear one week from today oct 26 have a nice pacing break and remember that monday classes will be held on wednesday next week
