              lehigh university brown and white vol si — no 1 * s s«i-4i§4 bethlehem pa tuesday october ot 1w v,v ; y m :^^«(;^: ww steckbeckmemorial tomorrow heart attack friday proves fatal the man who many thought epitomized the spirit of lehigh university died friday professor john stonier steckbeck succumbed to a heart attack at his home in bethlehem he was 66 stock joined the university staff in 1966 as assistant director of physical education and he later became director of intramurals and recreation he retired from that post at the end of last semester but his relationship with the university was far greater than the scope encompassed by his job in a statement monday university president deming lewis said john steckbeck was a rare and marvelous person who not only did his own job very well but added also a contagious energy and enthusiasm to everything he did generations of students have been motivated by steck in ways that went far beyond the conventional classroom we shall miss him sorely and stock's enthusiasm was in evidence from the beginning of a student's life at the univer sity he was the master of the freshmen rally ashe told a bethlehem globe-times reporter in july i'm the first one to meet the freshmen when they come is the orientation session the kids are apprehensive nervws a httle uncertain but by the time we get done with our cheering and our singing it's like urny were here far mt years at the end of a student's university life stock was there too singing the alma mater at graduation mandatory retirement last spring ended his employment with the university but steckbeck was still active in the affairs of the school where he spent 21 years he was coordinating the program for the upcoming ncaa cross country ________________————--_-_»___——------—-—- a memorial service for john steckbeck open to the public will be held in packer memorial church at 4 p.m wednesday all other funeral services are private championships and compiling a book on the history of athletics at the university in a brown and white interview two weeks ago a smiling steckbeck said you don't think steck is ever going to stop do you i haven't lost any of my energy yet . 1 still love lehigh and never will let myself do anything to hurt the university you knew i'm really not the intramural director i'm a lehigh university man he told globe-times reporter jack mccallum mccallun wrote in a july column let that be the epitaph for john stohlersteckneck then he was a lehigh university man and be sure to write it in brown and white he would want it that way \ familiar pose by mm steckbeck is this skat of a tyesk mrm rally meek died friday at ms hmae computer delay contributes to bookstore bills lateness by steve morrow after a seven-week delay bookstore bills have finally been mailed however university students still may not know their present bookstore balance friday's bills only cover purchases made before sept 8 there are two reasons fc the delay according to university bookstore director robert bell first the new university financial accounting service pre-empted non-academic computer time for the past few months the bookstore is hit the hardest by these delays because it holds lowest priority among users of the university computer bell said - the university switched to a com puterized accounting system in july stricter accounting procedures also contributed to the delay bell explained in the past the bookstore always began its end-of-school inventory officially the june 30 inventory in early june but this summer the university asked the bookstore not to start inventories until june 30 it takes four weeks just to code keypunch and produce cards for the new year's inventory bell said meanwhile students are anxious to find out how much money they have left for their fall semester purchases i think it's bogus said greg dinon 82 i don't know how much i owe others are more positive about the situation sally fellenzer 81 said she considers the late bills an advantage right now my money's sitting in the bank collecting interest she said they can give me the bill in june for all i care yes die university's losing money study compares deans offices funds by jim donahue a a qtvff'aafy'lc wwfw a/l/»aoiv low morale high turnover and the lack of opportunities for advancement have been cited recently as problems in the dean of students office a brown and white look at other colleges could not determine whether these problems exist at other schools due to the wide variety ol systems for handling student life this university normally has a dean of students an associate dean of students in charge of residence an associate dean in charge of discipline and academic records an assistant dean of students for student activities an assistant dean of students for fraternities and an assistant dean of students in charge for women's affairs and programming in addition the residence operation staff also reports to the dean of students the positions of associate dean in charge of residence and assistant dean for fraternities are currently vacant some schools such as the university of pennsylvania and east stroudsburg state college do not have a deaa of students perm has a director of student of life with nine assistants their primary respon sibilities include programming student activities and budgeting and facilities two others outside the student life office also report to the director a full time radio station manager and a director of the women's center east stroudsburg has a vice president for student affairs a residence director and 22 resident deans who divide up responsibilities at some schools the dean of students office encompasses a wider range of ac tivities than the university at tufts university for example in addition to student activities and residence the staff of the counselling center and the placement office report to the dean of students at the university those two of fices report to vice president for student affairs preston parr other schools such as bloomsburg state college have one person responsible for residence halls and another responsible for housing many of the schools have a pyramid structure in the dean of students or student life office this means there is room for b_w phc»o by morrison who loves you baby was an ex pected line from marc peo 81 during saturday evening's halloween parties he went all oat in his portrayal of kojak parting with his locks other pictures on page 6 see computer page s see scojpe page 4 inside bookstore delay pa halloween shots pa bisons downed pm
