five weeks remain hi the fall semester so catching up is becoming a must dean duties temporarily delegated by ed fiedler a graduate assistant has been hired to temporarily take over some of the duties of herschel dorney former assistant to the dean of students dorney who resigned oct 5 handled the bulk of matters dealing with residence halls fraternities and sororities david varrelman 78 former president of beta theta pi fraternity tuesday took over many of the fraternity and sorority responsibilities william quay dean of students said varrelman who will start work in january toward a master's degree in business administration mba will occupy dorney's former office uc 210 a full-time successor to dorney will not be appointed until a replacement is found for robert reeves former associate dean of students quay said reeves left the university in mid-august to become vice president for student af fairs at worcester polytechnic institute in worcester mass the assistant formerly dorney reports directly to the associate dean formerly reeves so the new associate dean will have a say in the selection of dorney's replacement quay said four of the eight candidates for the associate dean post have been interviewed so far he said the interview process includes meetings with student representatives from the residence halls council rhc interf raternity council ifc gryphon society and forum the candidates also meet with members of the dean of students staff the residence operations staff preston parr vice president for student affairs and president deming lewis quay said he hopes the new associate dean of students can be named by thanksgiving with the new person taking office prior to the start of next semester the shortage of two staff members has made things busy as hell in the dean of students office quay said adding so far everything has gone well quay credits robert cohen who took office in september as assistant dean of students with assuming much of the load brodhead house tax-free globe times report wrong by kathy mangan contrary to the bethlehem globe times report by law the university does not have to pay any taxes on brodhead house because it is a non-profit organization eric ottervik vice president for ad ministration and planning said the 2.1 million building was assessed at 715,700 by northampton county ac cording to the globe times 67,971 in taxes from sept 1 on was to be paid to the county city and bethlehem area school district ottervik said probably a reporter dashed off the story quickly based on the assessment he said the university legal counsel has sent a letter to the county explaining why they are not paying the taxes as long as the building is being used for the purposes for which the institution exists the university does not have to pay taxes ottervik explained when the college theater was on the land the university had to pay the taxes there is an agreement to sell the land directly in front of brodhead house bor dering fourth street to a small group of private developers the university currently pays taxes on that land ac cording to ottervik but he said the taxes were probably well under 100 a year the 58,000 tax figure was based mostly on the va lue of the building mugging at alumni building second incident in 2 weeks a student was assaulted and his wallet stolen at knifepoint tuesday as he walked by the alumni memorial building the student a resident of trembley park told campus police he was walking down the staircase located next to the northeast corner of the building around 7 p.m when one assailant stepped in front of him and another behind he was trapped he couldn't run eugene dax chief of campus police said noting that the staircase is bounded by the building on one side and high boxwood shrubs on the other the victim told police he thought it was a joke when one of the assailants demanded . that he hand over his wallet the victim said he laughed in response to the demand until the assailant pointed a knife at him after he handed over the wallet which contained 50 and an id card the victim was ordered to turn around the victim who said he didn't like the idea of someone holding a knife behind his back said he attempted to punch the suspect and run he was pushed to the ground twice once receiving a blow to the back of his head the victim told police he was not sure if the mow came from the assailant or because he hit his head on something as he fell to the ground one of the suspects was described as an 18-20 year old hispanic 5 feet 8 inches tall with medium-length hair frizzy at the ends wearing a brown coat wifh fur trim the victim did not get a close look at the other assailant police said the victim received no major injuries but was dazed by the incident the method of operation and description of the suspects were nearly identical to an incident at the same spot on the night of oct 17 a resident of the german house was struck with a stick and his wallet containing only 1 and an id card was taken also on the evening of oct 17 the university center desk received a call from an anonymous female claiming her purse had been stolen as she walked past the alumni building the call might have been a hoax dax said nobody ever came forth to us < campus police or to bethlehem police claiming her purse had been stolen as a result of the first mugging incident police have been stationed at night inside the alumni building looking out windows at probable trouble spots ironically there was a patrolman in the building tuesday night but shortly before the latest in cident he was called away to assist on another call on campus patrols on foot and in marked and un marked cars have been increased around the alumni building dax said adding we don't have enough people to stake out one place for any great length of time security around the alumci building is hindered by the shrubbery and only spotty lighting which allows would-be assailants to hide easily he said prize pumpkins w photo toy memry wednesday's pumpkin-carving contest on the patio of grace lounge brought out such diverse figures as the pumpkin man in the rear didi
