membership in the society joseph c gabuz da m.e 43 bernard egan met e 44 frank berman met.e 44 david kirk ch.e 45 ernest gerlach ch.e 45x joseph gil ley m.e 46 robert weiss bus 46 paul alexy bus 46 and robert mains engineer of tests before these men are admitted to full membership in the society they must appear or have some original composition performed publicly announced robert w rouse m.e 44 president it is quite probable that some of these provisional members will gain their keys by appearing in the forthcoming tone series of spring chapel concerts 124 juniors hear judd at banquet raf wing commander tells of north africa by danal epstein i honestly believe we are fight ing to decide who shall not live in north africa said wing com mander michael judd in one of his lighter moments at the junior class banquet last night at the hotel bethlehem the dinner was attended by 124 members of the class of 1944 in addition to several guest speakers in describing the particular section of north africa in which he led three squadrons com mander judd of the r a f said it is the most beautiful the most fascinating and the most horrible place in the world his talk on the british tactical fighting at el alamein was interspersed with a wonderful sense of humor which kept the students on the edge of their seats water supply critical the most serious shortage in north africa according to com mander judd is the lack of water however he claims that you can drink salt water if you put enough gin in it he described the arabs of the area as being definitely pro-british and anti-italian immediately after dinner cap tain samuel pierce of the mili tary department led the group in singing some school songs hugh boyd m e chairman of the com mittee greeted the class and in troduced the president of the class kenneth g swayne m e who thanked the committee for their work and welcomed commander judd e kenneth smiley direc tor of admissions was introduced as toastmaster and took over from there a few words were said to the class by president c c wil liams dean wray h congdon dr claude g beardslee and dean a copeland callen who were seated at the dais members of the committee which helped to prepare the very successful banquet in addition to hugh boyd were philip j berg m e e lyster frost met e blame d ferrell ch e and : earle w wallick e e advanced rotc will not be called to active duty until astp enters beds stored for astp preparations for the coming of the expected 400 army specialist trainees are being made by the buildings and grounds depart ment even though the date of their coming is not known large quantities of beds mattresses and such supplies are being procured and stored ready to be used on short notice the university is required to furnish complete room equipment including beds blankets sheets pillows and pillow cases a suf ficient quantity of each of these items is being bought to provide for the expected first contingent of about 400 men all but 110 of the beds are of the double decker type the others consist of springs to which gliders are being attached by university workmen these will slide under present dormitory beds and thus be out of the way in the daytime bed clothing to be provided is three blankets four sheets and two pillowcases per man the latter to take care of laundering time store sufficient equipment all of this material has been ordered to arrive between the 25th of march and the ist of april vacant rooms in the various dor mitories are being used for stor age of sufficient equipment to provide for the needs of that building so that it is available in case army men arrive with short advance notice said willard a litzenberger superintendent of buildings and grounds office space is being made in the basement of the alumni build ing utilizing the former janitor's room and part of the store room space the intended use of the office has not been disclosed there will be no students at lehigh under the army specialized training program during the early part of april and probably none during the entire month according to the indications of evidence in the president's office yesterday by the same token if the order as received continues in effect ad vanced rotc students enlisted in the erc will not be called up to enter active service and live in dormitories until a detachment of army students does arrive evidence shows that if a detachment does not arrive soon the original order calling for activation of advanced rotc men at the end of the sem ester will be the first to take ef fect reason for this delay in the astp was found saturday when a copeland allen dean of the college of engineering learned in washington that the results of psychologically gauged screening tests given many thousands of soldiers had failed to unearth the expected wealth of advanced en gineering talent the results were so poor that the entire program in engineering has been slowed down callen reported new tests needed the powers in washington are faced with a curtailment of the scope of the program in the num ber of students sent to an individ ual institution or with the design and administration of an entirely new screening test in anticipation however of the army's arrival the president has announced the purchase of sev eral hundred bed springs to which gliders are being attached by members of the buildings and ground force these will slide under the regular dormitory beds in daytime and will obviate the purchase of a great number of double deckers o business fraternity visits ibm offices on its second field-trip this semester alpha kappa psi pro fessional business fraternity vis ited the offices of the international business machine corporation in bethlehem wednesday to inspect the machines in operation a previous field-trip was made to the neuweiler brewing company to make a study of manufactur ' ing processes the system through which the . ibm corporation never sells ma chines own — a type c taxation dean carothers reactions to the plan are as follows 1 the ruml plan as proposed is indefensible 2 it is aimed at a grave defect in the present sys tem 3 pay-as-you-go can be in stalled only by a remission of one year's taxes for certain people or by an intolerable double taxation 4 it is possible to move to pay as-you-go by the remission sys tem without serious injustice the l — no 42 early army arrival is termed unlikely all seniors in the college of arts and sciences are expected to take the carnegie graduate record examination this year according to dean philip m palmer the liberal arts faculty voted over whelmingly to require the record examinations of all senior ma jors examinations will be held april 20 and 21 divided into two sessions the first part of the examination will be given tuesday morning april 20 and the second part wednes day afternoon april 21 both sessions will be held in room 1 coppee hall seniors who are re quired to take the examination pay no fee other students are charged a 1.50 fee application blanks for the ex amination may be secured from the office of dean palmer coppee hall all applications must be filed with dean palmer on or be fore april 3 the examinations are highly recommended for students seek ing army commissions graduate fellowships or scholarships and as essential data as a recommen dation for any type of position all arts seniors take carnegies pres williams to plan administration of astp president clement c williams was given the power by the board of trustees to negotiate the im pending contract with the war department for the instruction housing messing and medical care of such trainees as may be assigned such action eliminates the need for a special meeting of the board of trustees and will un doubtedly speed up university action when details of the con tract are given out president williams has notified the war de partment of this action this was one of several actions taken by the trustees at their meeting last saturday others in cluded the appointment of james a gordon as director of the astp physical fitness program a lot of physical education is speci fied in the army program though the exact type is not known fay c bartlett will remain as direc tor of physical education for the civilian students though the ma jority of the department will probably come under army jur isdiction elbert f caraway was named as acting director of athletics as well as manager to replace gor don gordon however remains as the chairman of the depart ment of athletics regular program continued the trustees also announced that at least a unified program of studies would be carried on in the colleges of business administra tion and arts and sciences during the war emergency this action was taken to allay many rumors and queries concerning the fate of these colleges by a unified pro gram is meant that choice of elec tives will be limited but that suf ficient courses will be offered for graduation in all fields the accelerated program was officially made the normal pro gram of the university students will not be allowed to choose be tween a summer vacation and a summer semester but will con tinue examination to be held on the campus friday morning april 2 at 9 o'clock specific place for the examination and further details will be announced in tuesday's brown and white all v-12 students unassigned erc men and students not in a specific branch of the armed services should take the examina tion the dean advises since the test-results will be used in de termining how to route the
