zetuemoyer was an nounced by president deming lewis at todays meeting of the board of trustees donald sawyer an internationally known chemist and educator from the university of california at riverside will succeed zetuemoyer effective july 1 zettlemoyer will retire at his own request effective june 30 after 38 years of service to the university including 11 years as provost he will return to his active career in research as a university distinguished professor the appointment of sawyer culminates a 1 0-month search by a nine-member com mittee chaired by carey joynt m j rathbone distinguished professor of international relations under the new provost there may be some small changes in organization and some changes in duties but the job will remain basically the same lewis said the vice president and provost exer cises all the powers and duties of the university in the case of disability of the president or at the direction of the president or in the case of a vacancy in the office of the president until the next meeting of the board of trustees or of the executive committee of the board ac cording to university priorities rules and regulations the vice president and provost if the chief administrative officer of the academic programs of the university under the direction of the president the provost supervises aad directs ail in structional programs and personnel approves all appointments to the in structional staff controls all funds budgeted for instructional purposes and exercises such other duties and authority as is assigned by the president graduation henry kissinger former secretary of state and a nobel laureate will deliver the address at lehigh university's 112th commencement on june 1 the announcement was made by deming lewis president of the univer sity and walter smerconish president of he senior class the senior class executive committee worked in conjunction with the office of the president on the selection of a com mencement speaker i am pretty psyched about getting kissinger with the issues the way they are by the time of graduation a few months from now he may be the key speaker to have smerconish said each department chairman was asked to suggest three possible speakers from his area of expertise kissinger most popular of 10-12 finalists was then put with the others on a ballot which was made available to be voted on by the senior class according to smerconish there was a good response from the class with more than half of the seniors responding kissinger was most popular followed by johnny carson edward kennedy and jerry brown last year's commencement speaker james michener was chosen by a poll of 123 faculty support school of ed more than a hundred faculty members have signed an open letter urging university president deming lewis to withdraw his dec 7 statement concerning the school of education in that statement lewis said the school in operation since 1966 would be closed down unless it reduced its budgetary deficit within two years the letter signed by 123 faculty members said in part every possible avenue of reform and retrenchment should be explored by the president in concert with the entire university faculty and administration before closing the school of education is even comtemplated let alone discussed in public the president's ultimatum of dec 7 and the wayilf wfflclf it was delivered cannot be regarded as a constructive approach to the problem " also the letter urged lewis to withdraw his statement before it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy of doom it asked lewis to initiate a wide-ranging process of consultation and discussion to help the school ' , the educational policy committee ( edpol took a step in that direction at its dec 12 meeting when it formed by unanimous vote a special subcommittee to deal with the school of education the resolution said the subcommittee should be charged with the task of con sultation and discussion with all relevent parties in order to assist our colleagues in the school of education to the maximum extent possible the seven-member subcommittee will probably consist of a chairperson plus two faculty members from each of the colleges although an exact number of members has not yet been decided in a joint letter dated dec 20 lewis and perry zirkel dean of the school of education said we want to convey our clear and mutual desire mat the school of education continue its operations in definitely and that it respond effectively to student in stable condition following dec 20 assault by peter schilling farid fred salloiim a 19-year-old sophomore suffered a fractured skull and jaw after he was allegedly attacked by his roommate with a hammer on dec 20 in room b-22s mcclintic-marshall house now in stable condition in crouse irving memorial hospital in syracuse he had two operations — one to repair a skull fracture the other to mend a broken jaw according to william quay dean of students he underwent a three-hour operation when he was admitted to st luke's hospital on dec 20 quay said he was transferred 250 miles to crouse irving on dec 30 to be closer to his dewitt n.y home salloum is now working with a physical therapist to regain power on the right side of his body quay said the head injuries he sustained were mainly to the left side of the head which controls the right side of the body quay explained sal loom's roommate lawrence bradshaw 83 also 19 was arrested by bethlehem city police dec 20 he was arraigned before district magistrate john homicide aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person the following day pending a hearing \ before the discipline committee brad shaw was suspended from the university the interim suspension was authorized by president deming lewis according to robert cohen associate dean of students and discipline committee case officer bradshaw is being held at the alien town state mental hospital for observation under a
