lehigh university brown and white senate proposed to replace forum val tl - n«3s by john burke both bodies the forum and the faculty should be dissolved george kane professor of industrial engineering said at an open forum debate last thur sday it is my own judgement he continued that the best way to make this thing university governance effective is to form a university senate kane a member of the committee on forum structure and purpose of the bell committee as it is called gave the most radical suggestion but others also proposed changed at the end of last semester a report prepared by the bell committee headed by raymond bell associate professor of education advocated a major revision of the forum one of the recommendations of the report was to create a dual system with a student body and ti faculty body only about 50 people attended thur sday's meeting but david lewis forum chairman and professor of french and german said it was successful because ihere was a lot of constructive criticism offered lewis offered critism of his own to the administration information shouldn't have to be dug out he said the forum doesn't have its own civil service lewis was referring to the difficulty the forum had m getting information from the adf ministration he said for example that last year's budget was presented to the forum for valuation by deming lewis just two days lx>fore it was to be submitted to the board of trustees howard whitcomb a member of the bell committee and associate professor of government recommended a university-wide committee that would look at the broad question of university governance before people considered changing the forum according to kane the key question is 1 are you satisfied with the participation of faculty a«d-or students m «« governance of he university ' ' most people who spoke at the meeting thursday indicated they were not the forum must represent faculty and student interests and it isn't dealing effectively with either one's interests said john dorf 81 chairman of the ad ministration subcommittee but i don't think the dual system is the answer he added dorf's view represented that of other forum members m his opposition to the dual system most forum members indicated they would favor some alterations however dorf recommended a faculty senate outside the forum which leonard wenzd forum ix chairman and professor of chemical engineering said sounds george kane weekly meetings set by committee for spring fling plans for a spring fling are now m progress according to ken hollen 80 interfraternity council ifc president a spring fling committee has already met several times and will continue to meet every tuesday until apr 22 the ifc has begun working with organizations . both on and off cammis v hollen said ad _ ding that he hopes eventually almost every campus organization will be brought into it hollen said he hopes the early and continuous planning for the fling will prevent the event from being cancelled like last year because of numerous problems with the administration and lack of genera campus support according to john conally 79 chairman of last year's spring fling committee there has already been a lot of interest and support shown for a spring fling to be held apr 25 and 26 according to hollen assistance and participation by other uhigh valley colleges and the bethlehem community are also expected and en couraged he said although at this stage the plans for a spring fling are a bit general brad horn 82 newly elected chairman of the spring fling committee said he has outlined a tentative agenda the festivities will begin on friday evening apr 25 with movies to be shown m saucon valley these will probably be composed of short comedies horn said saturday morning will begin with a three-mile run-a-thon through closed-off bethlehem streets along with serving as a competition between campus living units high schools and the community this event will serve as a fund-raiser horn said all profits from the run-a-thon and the spring fling as a whole are to benefit the united way he added saturday afternoon will feature a special olympics m the rauch field house there is also a possibility of some type of carnival coinciding with this time slot horn said the spring fling is intended to continue through saturday night but as of yet there are no firm plans for that evening ac cording to horn the committee is trying not to do things too fast or get too many people involved at once horn noted that the committee is not even going to try to serve alcohol thus have not had hot water on a regular basis since finals last advisor transfer problems discussed at edpol meeting by kenneth sealls insufficient faculty advising to students and problems with transfers between " colleges were two main concerns brought up wednesday at the educational policy ed pol meeting our good advisers are overworked said curtis clump associate dean of the college of engineering and physical sciences clump said he advises half of the department's 500 freshmen m addition to handling their summer pre-registration briefly mentioned were disparities m the engineering college which clump said makes for as few as five students per adviser in the metallurgy department yet leaves the industrial engineering advisers responsible for 75 students each richard roberts professor of the materials research center said the problem of faculty advising is two-fold m that the same person must meet the mechanical skill of preregistratidn and be a human being with the student by stirring him through the quagmire roberts said the important advising is done foe example when the student is taking difficult courses and wants to be on the track team he said it should not be the adviser's job to cater to a student who says i have 13i credits did i get all my distribution requirements m artis palmo associate professor of education and human development said advising is one of
