lehigh lehigh basketballers go down in defeat by a narrow margin in game at easton score 18-15 superior foul shooting of reeves dives maroon and white ad vantages—guards play well starboard and port star novelty dancing and brink of silence win great applause other acts also well re ceived dizzy six furnish music both the mandolin club and the glee club are continuing to practice regularly and the combined clubs are working up an unusually enter taining program for the trips to be taken in the spring some very high grade work is being done as both clubs are practicing pieces that few college musical clubs would at tempt the three months practice is beginning to show its effect and the men are now showing some real ability in doing their work at present manager e w bow den 21 is busy arranging trips for the coming season the home con cert will be given in the soutl bethlehem high school the latter part of february the date is not fixed as yet on friday march 4 the clubs will give a concert in tarrytown new york under the auspices of the y m c a it is possible that the clubs will combine with this trip a stop in east or ange n j it is certain that the clubs will go to philadelphia some time toward the end of march al though the date is not yet settled unfortunately the proposed trips to wilson college and pittsburgh could not be arranged for continued on page three the final cut in the mandolin club has been made although it is possible that ome or two more men will have to be eliminated to bring the club down to the authorized yearlings lose to lafayette freshmen the coot imitation of wrestling tryouts for the west virginia meet here saturday at 2 30 p m showed that a fighting bunch has been brought together and though early yet the scientific end of the sport is not slighted there is a wealth of material to choose from and the elimination method keeps every man in first form or gives a man who is steadily improving a chance to step in his rightful place of the older more experienced wrestlers bertodet loeser and meyers finished up their bouts in fine form although each had to fight hard against the attack of new vigor on the squad it was regretted that the bout be tween drew and reynolds was not held friday drew however hurt his arm and reynolds was called home the tryout therefore will take place monday and it will be interesting to see the result of this bout being one in what many con sider the fastest weight in the list the student body are showing great interest in the tryouts the squad room being crowded every afternoon and augmented greatly the applause approving the winner of a bout the west virginia meet is one that is very important on the sched ule the college has a noted ath letic prowess and her entrance into readily seen that lehigh's team is progressing very rapidly a summary of the meet follows : continued on page four the act closed with the returned prisoner placing a bomb in the pris on yard after all the bolsheviks had left in favor of democracy after a very clever and enter taining act by herman weber 22 entitled mysteries of magic in which a number of new and mysti fying tricks were performed came the brink of silence this act was one which required much more dramatic ability and was also an act of a more serious nature the parts were unusually well played and held the audience tense the story was of an explorer who dur ing an expedition in the amtartic re gions was supposed to have died due to his prolonged absence at the time of his departure eight years previous he had left his wife and boy of 16 years at home in lieu of his return during the year af ter eight years during which his wife had been told of her husbands death she married another man and the son decided to complete what his father had supposedly not done just by accident the son continued on page three tau beta pi hold inititation banquet civil engineers to hear dr r.s macelwee the showing lehigh's mermen made on saturday in the swimming meet ait rutgers far exceeded ex pectations being the first meet of the season for lehigh's squad coup led with the fact that rutgers is generally conceded to have one of the best eastern college teams the outcome speaks very well for the future of the lehigh squad the team secured one first place seven seconds and three third places and in other places the competition was very keen during ithe meet leo giebel for mer olympic swimmer won two first places and broke his own rec ord for 100 yards clipping one fifth of a second from his former mark regad by winning the plunge secured for lehigh the only first place won he plunged a distance of 59 feet and six inches which is considerably lower than his best mark made in practice he has equalled the distance which won for damiami the interoollegiaites last season regad is a valuable man to lehigh and is bound to make a name for himself in future events arnier of lehigh followed very closely on reg-ad plunging 57 feet he shows great possibilities arid with regad the plunging portion of the team is well taken care of straub of lebigh gave a very good account of himself in the fancy diving winning over sher win the captain of rutgers with 92 points but losing to galbraith rutgers with 99 po'in'ts the relay was easily won by rut gers as was the 50-yard event the 220 event was made in very good time 2.39 2-5 and was wort by clarence ross who holds the metropolitan championship ross was expected to win but he was pushed hard by jacobs and schaef fer of lehi'gh who won second and third places respectively scbaeffer come in second in the 100-yard dash which was won by giebel of the recent olympic team among the officials was handley of the n y a c who acted as referee mr handley is a very capable and noted referee and is expected to referee at lehigh some time in the near future during the afternoon m k ja cobs 22 the fastest man for 220 was elected captain of the lehigh team for 1921 continued on page two the final score was rutgers 33 lehigh 20 and is a very creditable one rutgers defeated lehigh last year by the score of 46-22 and it is thfe tau beta pi honorary en gineering society held its vvintei initiation and banquet last friday evening the following men were initiated at that time : w j arner h c bailey p w carney h r davenport h goldman e p gangwere t c henmeberger h g locke m j rathbone and r r mentz following the ceremany the in itiation banquet was held at the kurtz restaurant many of k alumni and faculty were present among whom were dr h s drink er 71 ; l j h grosshart 86 and s j cort 06 mr berner was toastmaster and introduced the speakers of the ev ening who wre dr h s drinker 7 dr b h miller and mr s j cort 06 mr berner also called on the other members of the facul ty and alumni who were present and on a few of the new members the banquet was brought to a close by the singing of the alma mater st paul's society to hold dance friday important notice the lehigh basketball team made the lafayette team go to the limit last saturday night at easton in or der to wins fighting them up to the last minute and losing by only three points the game was niip and tuck all the way through and it,was not until the very end that the brown and white warriors suc cumbed to an 18-15 defeat such a hard and close battle has not been between these two teams for some time and it brought back the old lehigh-lafayette spirit time again the main factor in lafayette's victory was probably the foul shooting of reeves this sturdy guard was responsible for 10 of the eighteen points by this method his accurate eye from the foul mark enabled him to drop ten fouls thru the net out of eleven attempts there were no stars ini the game at all as the playing of all the men was practically of the same calibre for lehigh lingle secured the greatest number of points making a good record from the fifteen-foot mark by scoring nine out of four teeni chances antd scoring one field goal beside maurer started as limgle's running mate and played a good game also securing one double-decker fraim acting cap tain secured the only other field goal for the brown and white kearney was the leading scorer in field goals caging two of this var iety bieber and brennam were the other two men to score from the floor for lafayette the game was indeed close thru the entire forty minutes neither team leading by more than three points at any time during the game close guarding was one of the out standing parts of the game which accounted for such a low score both pairs of guards continually stuck to their men and scoring was almost impossible even the for wards on occasions when the ball neared the opponents's basket would hurry down to that end of the court in order to keep the en emy from scoring after battling for twenty minutes the game halt ed with the teams deadlocked at a 10-10 score both sides had se cured three field goals while the foul shooters had each caged four tries reeves outshot lingle in this half by caging four straight tosses while lingle registered four out of six attempts the second half started like the continued on page three jazzand six slated for college dance ; in a basket ball game played as a preliminary to the varsity game the lehigh freshmen lost to lafa yette freshman last saturday night the final score was 25 to 13 the first half of the game was dose the lead changing from one team to the other both teams played good basketball m this per iod and the guarding of lehigh freshmen was good the score at the end of the period was 8-7 in favor of lafayette the intermission seemed to help the lafayette team play while that of lehigh was inferior to their work in the first half the easton team started off with a rush and soon ran up a commanding lead in addition to shooting more bask ets the lafayette team made more fouls lehigh freshmen made several changes during the second half while lafayette played through the game with the quintet that started fisher left forward on the lafa yette team was the star of the game netting three field goals and 9 fouls for a total of 15 points late several instances have been heard of stud ents playing in bethlehem and the vicinity under a name which is not recognized by the athletic associa tion members of such teams are asked to give the matter their at tention a meeting of the st paul's so ciety of lehigh university will be held friday evening jan 21 in the parish house of the nativity church the meeting will be in the form of a dance and the girls of bishiopthorpe manor have been invited as guests the committee in charge promises a very enjoyable evening and all of the members of the society are urged to be present the treasurer will be on hand to give every member an opportunity of paying up his dues the picture of the class of 1921 will be taken next thursday noon on the steps of the university chapel all members of the class are requested to be present the winter variety show pre sented by the mustard and cheese dramatic association on saturday night in drown hall was a great success from start to finish des pite the fact that the brown and white five were fighting with la fayette at easton the hall was fill ed almost to capacity and the enter tainment offered was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone the first number on the program was an overture by the orchestra which also played selections be tween the acts during the changing of the scenes the first act on the program was the traitor with the scene laid in an american dug out somewhere in france the plot was the discovery of a traitor among a number of the american officers col anstruther played by robert b claxton 23 and lieutenant edwards played by h m atwood 3d 24 concocted a scheme between them to discover just who this traitor was lieut edwards was instructed to tell at a meeting of all the officers how he had given away to the enemy cer tain important information this was all done at the right moment and lieut edwards was pronounc ed a traitor by all but one officer and ordered to be shot as he was leaving the dugout capt willough by played by curtis p logan 24 spoke up in defense of the convict ed lieut edwards and begged that he should not be shot this dis closed the presence of the real traitor as none other than capt willoughby and the latter was or dered to be shot at sunrise instead of the assumed traitor the second act on the program was a dancing novelty act by w dana rudy 21 and j marshall piersol 23 many new and diffi cult steps were introduced and the act as a whole was well received an act of this nature is something new for mustard and cheese var iety shows and indicated great pos sibilities for future shows along the same line following starboard and port the dancing act came free speech with a laugh every tiinv ute the story was of a bunch of bolsheviks in a russian prison yard who could not decide whether or not the prisoner in their custodv had the right to speak before they should shoot him after many clever situations the question final ly resulted as to whether to shoot the corporal in charge or the pri.i oiier it was finally decide by voting to shoot the prisoner but during the voting the prisoner es caped then ¥ was decided to i;cot the corporal for allowing the prisoner to escape and he also es caped during the voting as o whether or not he should be shot dr r s macelwee director of the bureau of foreign and domes tic commerce the author of num erous books on subjects relating to trade and development of the ports in the uniited states and probably the best authority on shipping prob lems in connection with port facili ties at the present time will be the guest of the civil engineering so ciety tomorrow evening when he will address the society on the sub ject of ports and terminals the meeting of the society will be held at 8 p m in the physics lecture room and all members of the society and any others who are interested in this subject are cordi ally invited to attend and should by all means avail themselves of this opportunity to hear such a well known man on a subject which has lately been brought before the pub lic by the recent passage of the shipping bill and the formation of the shipping board dr macelwee has been constant ly quoted in many of the leading newspapers of the country one of his books ports and termh al facilities is used as a text book by the naval engineers and as a reference book by the civil engine ers at lehigh his talk will be one which should be of interest to ever man in college and none car rightfully afford to miss it the civil engineering society feels that it is a very great privilege to have dr macelwee with them
