is the result of aa enleasfrrt interview by the brown sad white with university president deming lewis it is fcii fin seen interview with the paper in more than a year president lewis answered questions on a wide range of subjects on all facets of university life the questions were sub mitted one week in advance v "*§§ " a primary reason for the 580 tuition increase besides inflation and energy is a three-year program by the university to make faculty compensation comparable to peer institutions according to university president deming lewis we are trying to compensate our faculty the way it deserves to be com pensated lewis said describing salaries here as very competitive he said the levels of compensation allow the university to attract younger people to the faculty lewis related the tuition hike and in creased faculty compensation to academic excellence the university is stronger than it's ever been according to the president lewis also answered questions on the forum a replacement for assistant dean of students nathan harris the student activities council sao and mandatory retirement of four professors among u>*r lewis suggested a possible reprieve for the four professors who will be forced into retirement because their 65th birthdays fall before the july 1 1«82 date for the increase in the mandatory retirement age for college professors to 70 for an in dividual person who is needed by the department to teach the curriculum exceptions can be made by the board of trustees at any time on a year-by-year basis he said lewis called this decision a depart mental one not for the higher ad ministration to make he termed the original decision not to extend the retirement age for the four faculty members ethical moral and legal the situation arose because of an ex ception applicable to college professors in a federal law passed in 1978 which raised the retirement age for employees nationally from 65 to 70 , the exception lasts from jan 1 1979 to june 30 1982 on july 1 iwz the man datory retirement age will be raised to 70 for college professors now any tenured professor whose 65th birthday falls before the june 30 1982 deadline must retire at the university 17 faculty members will reach the age of 65 before the deadline four—john haight professor of history robert williamson professor of social relations john van eerde professor of modern foreign languages and chuan chih hsiung professor of modern mathematics want to stay on forum describing the forum as a campus governance body as opposed to the campus governance body lewis said he would not take a personal position on the bell report and the proposed changes it recommends the bell report urges several drastic structural changes in the forum it would have the body split into separate student and faculty forums the recommendations came after a study by a committee chaired by raymond bell associate professor of education on the structure atidfepttpote of no man is an island for his handling of the school of education announcement of dec 7 the amendment motion failed 61-59 the amendment concerned the deletion of the last sentence of the resoltuion an act which if passed would have shown ah official lack of support on the part of the faculty for the president and the board of trustees the last line of the original resolution reaffirmed the faculty's general support of lewis and the trustees despite their criticism of the administration's handling of the school of education announcement the last line read * notwithstanding the above admonition we do affirm and support the president and board of trustees in their overall conduct of lehigh university affairs there are over 900 voting members of the faculty at the university several faculty members who did not attend the meeting ss id they would have voted for the deletion of the last line the amendment was proposed on the floor of the faculty meeting in a recent interview lewis said he did not want to discuss the matter i think i better try not to enter a discussion of that except to point out this is not the same thing as a vote of confidence or a vote of non-confidence in the british parliament i think this subject should be left un discussed in the british parliamentary system if the prime minister does not receive the support of a majority of parliament on a critical vote it is considered a
