lehigh university brown and white 219491-4194 vet 91 ne.jp z4 ivmmmm eiiwif mmmn\\\*maam bethlehem pa tuesday march 11 isb6 gift campaign lowers goal seniors seen as apathetic by ann lewnes this year's senior class gift campaign is not going as well as expected according to ted haase 80 campaign chairman in haase's last interview with the brown and wmte m january he said the goal for 1980 was 700 pledges when asked this month haase had lowered the goal to 600 we're just trying to be realistic he said currently there are approximately 400 pledges and less than two months left m the campaign by march of 1979 ap proximately 500 seniors had already pledged the 1980 campaign is having problems because a lot of people are apathetic according to joanne harris 80 publicity chairman last semester there was apathy among many of the 150 solicitors so the number of solicitors was reduced to 25 haase said fewer people working more intensely is better than a lot of people not doing anything he said ron taxin 80 a solicitor during the fall said he called seven people to arrange meetings and only three accepted a lot of people said no because they didn't think the school deserved anything he said it's not easy getting pledges haase admitted sometimes you have to meet them more than once but you can't nag them another problem with the campaign is publicity haase said ads are oc casionally put m the brown and white posting the most recent pledge count but no posters have been put up on campus this semester as they have been m the past he added several seniors who were contacted said they had not even heard of the campaign david cook an off-campus senior said he was not aware of the campaign because he was never called or approached by a solicitor matt berg a senior from sigma alpha mv said he was anxious to pledge but was also not contacted haase said he remains hopeful however j__i^»---w«__-biw-_--------»mm»-w»w«g»a»^gw»^^^^pi i i ii—^^■■■^^^b^^bkßn : - - _ ib*w two oy umn oiiiuiii proposal is being discussed to move the special interest lag concept to warren square next year — an idea which has met with mixed emotions see story above by nancy nakonechny and ed white bishopthorpe grad advisor claims no change in concept eleven residents of bishopthorpe all seniors last week charged its graduate advisor with subverting the house ideals and turning the bishopthorpe concept into one of an international house this week however kathy putnam the graduate advisor said the moving of the special interest group from bishopthorpe to warren square a is not for the purpose of setting up an international house the bishopthorpe concept will remain intact claimed putnam who is also director of the international center and advisor to the international club the bishopthorpe concept according to a letter to the brown end white is an experiment m alternative lifestyles one which gave member residents the oppor tunity to find fulfillment and growth potential m an off-campus environment the facility which can accommodate 60 residents is presently located at the corner of tombler street and jeter avenue near st luke's hospital it currently houses only 40 students and putnam according to warren soare associate dean of students putnam said she thought the university had sufficient reasons for terminating the lease the university announced that tt wtll terminate the lease on the residence because it has not been filled m recent years and has been a financial loss to the university m terms of the rent it is paying according to soare the residence has been leased by the university since 1974 to meet an increased demand for undergraduate housing soare said the recent construction of brodhead house has eased the demand for housing according to barbara kreppel director of residence operations st luke's hospital which owns the bishopthorpe building also said it has other plans for the facility and could not offer the university an extended lease kreppel said w * a the distance of tbe residence from the main campus and a lack of adequate parking facilities were also cited by soare as factors m the decision the announcement that the university will terminate the lease has created high emotion and a lot of misinformation according to putnam who said she was encouraged about the possible move to warren square and felt that the students were too people m this house don't want b&w photo by greg aausscr ears " fred salloum ' ' 82 - vic tim of an a ttac k last semester during finals was curs welcomed back for a visit saturday night with a surprise party held rsfurns or him hv mc l ' ntic - v '' ars * ial ' residents complete with wine cheese munchies music and an affectionate sign electricity costs on main campus climb by 59,000 by patrick wilchek the university will spend 59,000 more this year than last for electricity on the main campus according to donald bergeron assistant director of physical planning last year electricity cost the university close to 700,000 with more than 550,000 going toward electricity on the main campus and about 100,000 being spent on the saucon valley campus he said bergeron said he did not have the exact figures but guessed the percentage in crease m electricity costs te be higher than the increase m the rate of inflation at the present price of about three and one-half cents per kilowatt-hour the main campus electricity costs alone will come to 609,000 this year last year's per kilowatt-hour cost was under three cents bergeron noted the university presently uses 1.8 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per month between august and october and 1.5 see move page 4 see electricity page 4 inside bmm wwmmmm *~*
