lehigh university brown and white 215-8s1-4184 yel.il-ne.g4y bethlehem pa friday march 14 lfw edpol revises university mission outline by kenneth se alls in an attempt to update and clarify the university's mission statement the committee on educational policy edpol wednesday passed a motion calling for the formulation of a new statement along with renewing the 10-year-old statement of the university's mission and purpose the new statement will attempt to resolve problems with the lack of faculty involvement in the university's planning the mission statement explains the purpose of tlie university which is for tlie intellectual and moral improvement of young men and women according to bishop william stevens first president of the university's board of trustees two new mission statements have been formulated and a committee has been established to come up with a compromise statement according to raymond bell associate professor of education and human development in his five-page report submitted to edpol feb 27 david lewis chairman of the department of modern foreign languages wrote i should indicate at tlie outset mat it was not my intention to suggest that no planning is carried out at lehigh i do suspect however that it is incomplete and not sufficiently coor dinated and furthermore mat the faculty are not sufficiently involved in tlie operation lewis report was tlie basis of most of the discussion at wednesday's meeting under the current structure everything concerning academic policy must be brought before edpol according to john hunt dean of the college of arts and science once it leaves tliere hunt mid it mm '■' goes back to the administrative level and is discussed back and forth among ad ministrators the concern of edpol hunt said is to prevent issues from moving upward m the administration hierarchy by resoiving them on the lower tovtls moreover the administration should decrease com petition between departments by en couraging cooperation hunt said such cooperation is necessary because of a finite amount of resources and money he added according to peter beidler , professor of english problems with planning were discovered m the 1978 middle states evaluation report which said planning is the weakest general area at the univer sity in addition the report called for in volvement at all levels especially by the faculty university president deming lewis said it is not true that the faculty is not meaningfully involved m planning he called the middle states report dis appointing and inaccurate saying each dean could have given 10 times the information obtained by the report in the coiiege cf business and economics there is faculty involvement m planning to some degree according to richard bareness dean of the college i think it's fair to say that although the faculty would participate m very productive ways m many aspects of planning when it came down to a final choice of priorities they wouldn't go on the line bareness said edwin kay associate professor of psychology said one of the things i saw is that imperatives seem to wane ac cording to the season and weather he added that he and other faculty of getting to stabler center actually this boat publicizes the southeastern pennsylvania marooned boat show which will end sunday more than 100 pleasure craft will be displayed between noon and 9 p m admission is 2.59 for adults and 1 for children student assaulted robbed on staircase north of beta by linda pickens a university woman was assaulted and robbed on the steps north of beta theta pi on tuesday night according to campus police reports although her glasses stolen with the purse were found the next morning on bradley street an alley near bethlehem steel no suspects have been apprehended according to eugene dax captain of the campus police the suspect was described by tlie woman as about five feet 10 inches tall with a stocky build dark curly hair short afro and thin moustache he is about 20 years old perhaps older and appeared to be a light-skinned puerto rican or black • a composite sketch of the suspect was given to james ammend bethlehem police investigator wednesday afternoon both city and campus police are working on the case dax said the woman claimed bethlehem police said there have been as many as 12 assaults on or near campus in the past month however no one is willing to press charges or identify the guy he's not going after the purses — he's going after the girls she said ammend and dax both denied that there have been 12 assaults on previous years which saw such big names as billy joel and carly simon the recent musical drought has left most students not only disillusioned but angry is the sac ineffective what happened to the promise of stabler in november 1979 the hostility came to a head and interf raternity council ifc president ken hollen 80 approached student activities council sac president larua schrier 80 and told her the ifc had a chance to put on a concert and asked if the sac would object at the time the sac was looking into the possibility of a neil young concert and did not want tlie ifc booking a show at tlie same time hollen also suggested that the ifc and sac co-sponsor concerts in the future and schrier said she was ' willing to discuss the proposal she then went to dean of students william quay who suggested both groups get together to discuss the proposal quay also told her the ultimate decision concerning co-sponsorship would be up to the sac schrier said after two unsuccessful attempts at arranging a meeting a luncheon date was set in attendance were nathan harris assistant dean of students and adviser to the sac and dean quay among others quay sided with tlie ■- „., ■! - ii newsanalysis . ifc for co-sponsorship and harris with the sac against co-sponsorship the only thing agreed upon was that tlie sac would vote on whether they wanted to co-sponsor concerts with the ifc a few days later tlie sac vote had been taken and the decision was unanimously against co-sponsorship by then the last week of classes had arrived and schrier said she was not able to get in touch with hollen about tlie sac decision until five days after me vote hollen seemed surprisingly miiinmiiitiiiim^iiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiimmiiinaiimiiinniiiimmirmiiiiiiiwiiiriiiifmmfii agreeable to the decision schrier said and the semester ended without further discussion by january 1960 schrier said i thought everything had died down until i heard through some drunken people ata cocktail party that the ifc had been granted permission to do concerts by dean quay indeed not only the ifc but also tlie rhc residence halls council had been given the right to sponsor concerts schrier claims the sac was never officially notified of this the ifc lists several specific reasons for wanting to do concerts contacts hollen asserted that the ifc has connections in the com munications field and that it is ab surd not to utilize mem manpower we have 1200 people . many more than any other organization on campus hollen mid he pointed out that the manpower used right now by the sac is drawn from the ifc anyway a strong communications net work ifc representatives from each house attend ifc meetings and affirmative action earns approval of dept of labor by john burke the university's affirmative action plan has been approved by the united states department of labor following a review of university compliance with equal op portunity policies and practices the university was notified by letter dated jan 17 of its conditional com pliance that status could have been modified by the assistant regional ad ministrator or by the director of the office of federal contract compliance programs ofccp within a period mat expired 15 days ago however me approval may still be revoked if the university should deviate substantially from the commitments sat forth in the affirmative action plan according to the letter this affirmative action plan was required because tlie university has more man 1 million in government contracts according to linda turner assistant to the president the plan is an
