to 68 next year university president deming lewis will present a resolution at the april 17 board of trustees meeting that will raise the retirement age for tenured faculty from 65 to 68 for the period july 1 1980 to july 1 1982 the resolution says that faculty who reach age 65 during the next two years shall be continued on a full or part-time basis until july 1 after their 68th birthday providing he or she requests continuance and the voting members of his department recommend him or her nine months before « the person is scheduled to retire austin gavin executive consultant to the president said that continuance was not extended to people who will retire this year because their replacements have already been hired lewis's decision is a compromise from an earlier administration stand which would have left the retirement age at 65 several faculty members complained that the university decision to leave the retire ment age at 65 was unfair since the retirement age for all other employees in the country was raised to 70 in 1979 a special provision in the law excepted tenured faculty until july 1 1982 after that date the retirement age will be raised to 70 the proposal to raise the retirement age was drafted by the faculty personnel committee the personnel committee had been asked to look into the retirement issue after several faculty members brought it to the floor of a faculty meeting in december the personnel committee was supposed to report back to the faculty in february however at the february meeting the committee announced that it had brought a proposal to the administration the proposal it took to the adminis tration was to raise the retirement age to 68 it was this proposal lewis eventually accepted gavin said lewis accepted the proposal
