student from enjoying spring's warming rays and some light reading in the coming weeks she will be joined by hundreds of students seeking to keep their florida tans and get a jump on summer gops stress event not speakers by andy lehren the importance of the mock national republican convention is not whether the candidates attend but the ideas the high quality of surrogate speakers and the hope that the university will be able to establish itself as a politically active school according to kim perrone 82 and alex matturri 80 convention organizers candidates : no show concerning the fact that the three remaining republican candidates do not plan to attend the convention to be held in the stabler arena saturday perrone said i'm not trying to pull the wool over anybody's eyes i really want this thing to come off matt kilyk 83 in charge of delegates for the convention said many schools have been invited to attend the convention and those that have accepted the invitation are doing so because of the idea of a mock convention and not because the can didates may or may not show up schools invited schools invited to send representatives include ohio state university yale university princeton university university of pennsylvania american university lafayette college rutgers university and st joseph's university the reagan and anderson committees continue to confirm nationally and locally that their candidates will not attend the convention and that surrogate speakers will attend on behalf of the candidates u.s representative robert walker r pa will attend on behalf of ronald reagan according to walker's office marc holtzman 82 general coordinator for the reagan committee in penn sylvania stressed that we never made any committment for regan to personally attend the convention surrogates not selected holtzman said walker will not be the key reagan surrogate speaker and that a major surrogate can be arranged in a moment's notice he didn't specify who the substitute would be but did mention that u.s representative jack kemp r-n.y is a possibility the anderson committee has not selected a speaker but bob ackerman media director for the anderson com mittee in pennsylvania assured that ht will be a high surrogate speaker maybe even the representative's wife bush worker annoyed the national bush camp refuses to comment on the issue until tuesday but kathfe-m doian pennsylvania scheduler for the bush campaign said i'm very annoyed at the whole thing i fed that what the lehigh college republicans did was for hype they used words like * the can didates are expected to come which is deceitful i think that whoever is running the convention is irresponsible a member of the lehigh college republicans who asked not to be iden tified stated that the goal of having all the presidential candidates attending may have been overly ambitious but the convention is what's important not who's coming faculty concur with lewis on lack of confidence issue by kenneth sealls concurring with an earlier statement by university president deming lewis several prominent faculty members said recently that a closely decided vote at the feb 4 faculty meeting did not indicate a lack of confidence in the lewis ad ministration the vote concerning an amendment to a resolution criticizing lewis for his han dling of the school of education an nouncement of dec 7 failed 61-59 at issue was the deletion of the last line of the resolution which read not withstanding the above ad monition we do affirm and support the president and board of trustees in their overall conduct of lehigh university af fairs when asked if the 59 votes represented a lack of confidence in the administration david lewis chairman of the department of modern languages and forum x disagreed he said a vote of nonconf idence in the administration is a very specific type of action usually covering a broad range of activities lewis added that the vote was a spot vote because the faculty did not go to the meeting with the issue of general confidence in mind off-guard he said that people were taken off guard by the vote and that it had little significance towards the administration david amidon secretary of the faculty and lecturer of urban studies said the vote while giving no indication on non confidence in the administration by the faculty as a whole did indicate non confidence in the committee which drafted the resolution any time you're voting to draft a resolution and it fails it shows a lack of confidence in the drafters of that 50,000 allocated to alter buildings for handicapped by eric hokenson structural changes in campus buildings to accommodate physically handicapped students are well underway according to anthony corallo director of physical planning the university has appropriated 50,000 to bring buildings into compliance with the section 504 handbook of the department of health education and welfare hew regulations governing accessibility of college and university campuses to the handicapped in accordance with the handbook all of the nation's colleges and universities must have developed by aug 3 1977 a plan for the administration of structural changes to their campuses and must have submitted the plan to the federal government for approval corallo said the university's plan along with self-evaluation of related progress at the university have been submitted and approved by the government the purpose of the regulations is to provide program accessibility to handi capped students to ensure them equal benefits
