lehigh university brown and white 2is-bsmis4 bethlehem pa friday april 18 isss republicans mailed letter promising top candidates by andy lehren a letter saying the three remaining candidates for republican presidential nomination will attend the mock national republican convention was released by the lehigh college republicans on mar 24 to approximately 40 universities on the east coast nowhere in the letter does it say that the candidates might not attend despite claims to this effect made by convention organizers recently the letter says on saturday apr 19 from 10 a.m to 4 p.m the lehigh university college republicans will be sponsoring a presidential mock con vention among those who will be at tending are gov ronald reagan am bassador george bush congressman john anderson congressman robert walker and congressman don ritter we are also expecting gov thornburg lt gov scranton sen heinz sen schweiker and philip crane the letter is on lehigh university college republicans stationary and is signed by matthew s kilyk delegation committee lehigh university college republicans kilyk 83 released an update to the universities however the update does not i nd ica te that the candidates do not plan to attend also it makes no comment on the situation with guest speakers the candidates never committed themselves to personally attend the convention tomorrow according to representatives for the candidates and the lehigh college republicans the lehigh college republicans received letters from john anderson and george bush which acknowledged the invitation to attend the convention but which did not commit themselves to personally attend the event it was decided on the national level by campaign schedulers for bush on march 14 that u.s representative jim leach r iowa wili speak on mr bush's behalf according to kate morris head of speakers for bush in washington d.c we've had that understanding for a long time she said tomorrow bush plans to fly from philadelphia to wilkes barre to washington d.c for speeches and television appearances and does not plan to attend the convention william scranton lieutenant governor of pennsylvania alumni donald stabler the was noon on may 4 1970 and thousands of kent state students were assembled outside to protest president nixon's decision to invade cambodia what started out as a peaceful encounter culminated in the death of four students and the wounding of nine others it is now io years later and the world is a very different place but the tragedy of may 4 will never be forgotten especially not by elaine holstein whose son jeffrey miller was one of four students slain mrs holstein spoke to univeraity students about her experiences during that difficult period in her speech monday night entitled kent state revisited ten years later mrs holstein explained that prior to the kent state incident she had considered herself basically apolitical i didn't know any details about the war i just knew that i wanted it to end because i had two boys capable of being drafted she said on may 2 1970 1 received a phone call from my mother saying that something was brewing at kent state so i called jeff he told me that things were getting out of hand in the town of kent but that he had only heard about it she explained then on monday may 4 at work as a school secretary in plainview long island mrs holstein received a phone call from her son jeff , who told her not to worry but that things were getting worse — some kids had burned down the rotc building and everyone was really upset that nixon had called the anti-war students bums jeff a junior told his mother that there were a lot of rallies that afternoon but sbe said she was not worried because her son was a mature kid used to making his own decisions while mrs holstein was talking with jeff there was a bomb scare in her building and she had to hang up and evacuate that was the last time she ever spoke to her son later that afternoon she heard that four students had been killed at kent state when she got home mrs holstein im mediately called jeff and the phone just four-mile run to honor steck ' aid united way the university will hold the first annual john steckbeck memorial run-a-thon on april 26 from 10 a.m to 12 noon the four mile course will begin at the flagpole and cross the fahy bridge going through the north side and returning to the flagpole according to joe mccarthy 81 com munity relations chairman of the in terfraternity council ifc and chairman of the run-a-thon committee the town officials have been extremely cooperative in closing off several of the main arteries in bethlehem and providing additional policing sponsors of the run-a-thon said the event is not a race and 700 posters which have been distributed throughout the lehigh valley stress that point with the words run walk or crawl but be there press releases to local newspapers and public service announcements are being employed for additional publicity the run-a-thon has been organized through a cooperative effort among the major organizations on campus there are a number of purposes for the run-a thon ken hollen 80 ifc president said they are to commemorate john steckbeck in a fitting and proper way to raise funds for a variety of philanthropic organizations particularly the united way and to project the university
