research and teaching assistant was sentenced aug 31 to one year in a federal prison for his part in a conspiracy to distribute pcp also known as angel dust in an interview friday sohara said that he will have to serve only 122 days of the sentence probably in allenwood state prison a minimum security institution he called the sentence pretty lenient the maximum senatence for the charge is five years and a 15,000 fine a total of six persons in the case pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to distribute the pcp the drug is used as a veterinary anesthetic but is not authorized for human use sohara was arrested july 13 in hunt sville ala where he was doing doctoral work in organic chemistry he was then arraigned and sent home to scranton on 10,000 bail after another arraignment in probation for three years the sentences will not be appealed sohara said two members of the group were originally arrested in rochester n.y for selling pcp to state narcotics agents the group had been are not controlled according to sohara the media says this is an easy synthesis that's true to a point he said the most difficult part of the process is to keep the product pure he explained orders for the drug came in sporadically and were for small amounts sohara said the group was finally cracked when they filled an order for 10 ounces of the drug around july 4 it took about three days to of 78 increased 33 per cent over last year according to eugene seeloff director of placement services nearly 1,100 offers were reported by 420 seniors this year as opposed to 824 offers to 386 seniors last year as of june 30 47 per cent of the 946 seniors in the class reported employment or military service an increase of 6 per cent over last year twenty per cent of the seniors plan io attend graduate school and fourteen per cent had other plans or did not respond to the placement survey nineteen per cent of the seniors are still seeking employment down from the 25 per cent for the class of 77 at a comparable date this was one of our most active years from both the student's and employer's point of view seeloff said he pointed out tha offers were up 90 per cent in 1977 over 1976 and another increase of 33 per cent proves that success breeds success according to seeloff women seniors averaged 2.8 job offers as compared with 2.4 for the female 77 graduates male seniors averaged 2.6 job offers as compared to 2.1 the year before seeloff said starting salaries were also up for the class of 78 the median starting salary was 1,300 per month an increase of 11.3 per cent over 1977 chemical engineers commanded the highest salaries 1,520 per month an increase of 8.5 per cent over last year civil engineers had the highest rate of starting salary increase up 14.5 per cent to 1,300 per month starting salaries for industrial engineers also rose 12.3 per cent to 1,335 per month business graduates reported a 3.8 per cent increase in median starting salaries to 1,125 per month and arts graduates , reported a 20 per cent increase to 1,020 per month seeloff is optimistic that the job picture will continue to be good for the class of 79 if they are sufficiently prepared to commit themselves to the process to make sure seniors are well prepared for the recruiting process a meeting will be held on september 14 at 4 p.m and 7 p.m for seniors graduate students and interested persons seminars on job search strategies resume development and interviewing skills also will be held beginning the week of october l according to joan davis assistant director of placement and coordinator of the seminars response was very healthy and positive from all three colleges when the seminars were first offered last fall ac cording to davis in addition the placement office will send the booklet you and career plan ning—making it happen to sophomores in october eugene seeijofe warren square zoning change may be appealed by jerry miller a bethlehem resident living in warren square is considering appealing last month's bethlehem zoning hearing board decision to allow the university to house freshmen in the warren square complex claude gebec of 224-226 warren square said monday he hasn't decided whether to attempt to reverse the decision gebec and his wife janet told the board on aug 23 they felt the university was changing the basic character of the warren square neighborhood by housing students there the board granted the university a temporary exception from the zoning ordinance at the aug 23 meeting two days before the freshmen arrived the university agreed to severai conditions in accepting it the exception which replaced a zoning variance granted la ♦ summer expires at the end of the academic year the variance expired in july and was necessary because
