lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday september m iws 21s-mm831 vol ft - no 8 business college facilities blasted business dean sees second-rate facilities by john copol'los and peter terenzio we have second-rate physical facilities that are not worthy of our quality academic program according to richard bareness dean of the college of business and economics even if this college were two-thirds as large as it is now i would still be dissatisfied he added in the last seven years enrollment m the business college has jumped from an average of 606 full-time un dergraduate students to 988 there has not been a corresponding increase m physical facilities or real budgeted dollars for salary and expenses furthermore doubt has been cast on the part of some members of the business college as to whether the university ad ministration is doing all it can to bring the business college into parity with the other two colleges according to a recent study conducted by james hansz associate professor of marketing a college the college of business and economics which graduates over 30 per cent of the students at lehigh and produces 20 per cent of the grades given with little more than ten per cent of the faculty and even less of the staff and facilities is hardly receiving richard barsness administration calls drown hall adequate the current state of physical facilities m the business college is good but not excellent ac cording to albert zettlemoyer vice president and provost zettlemoyer also said salary and expense budgets for the business college have been in creased more than the university average see tables paul franz vice president for development said that as far as he knew the business college was getting its fair share of economic resources he cited a report prepared by brian brock way former dean of the college franz added that rooms were recently renovated m drown hall i don't think we need another classroom building under any circumstances eric ottervik vice president for planning said we have no data for the in stitution as a whole that would say we need additional classrooms what they the members of the business college are saying is that they don't want to walk to classes . because it is inconvenient it gets them away from their offices it makes it difficult for a student to see a faculty member right after class . . " zettlemoyer said a lot of departments have their classes restrictions considered for business enrollment by linda pickens although the college of business and economics is overcrowded limiting the number of transfers between the university's three undergraduate colleges is not a viable way to solve the problem according to a consensus of the academic deans the registrar and the dean of students due to the university policy of free transfer within the colleges however this percentage was shifted to 30 per cent arts 27 per cent business and 43 per cent engin eering for the class of 1977 according to james wagner registrar approximately 135 freshmen were ad mitted to the business college this fall a figure that is about so or 80 fewer than usual according to brockway he added that university president deming lewis is working with samuel missimer director of admissions on plans to limit business college enrollment we've got to try a small freshman class because we've got an obligation to those students here who might want to transfer as their interests change brockway said because exact figures are not available on the number of transfers within the university enrollment patterns are more difficult to trace and predict according to wagner the university trustees ruled m 1969 that no more^than 20 per cent of the under graduates at the university should be enrolled m the business college as op posed to 40 per cent each for both engineering and arts according to brian brockway professor of accounting and former dea of the college of business and economics there is a pattern however of most students transferring into the business school from other colleges he said we are a big supplier of business college students most students who leave engineering go to the business college curtis clump associate dean of the college of engineering and physical sciences said we lose more students to business than to engineering because the business minor program parallels the business major for two years and many students switch over mark ellis dean of the college of arts and science said this fall 49 students from arts and 26 students from engineering transferred into the business college this figure of 75 new students was obtained from businet school records but sounds a little high according to brockway last spring arts lost 30 students engin eering lost 16 and the business school gained 46 according to wagner however he stressed that these figures include transfers from outside the university we have to find a way to offer the same opportunities to business students that students m the other two colleges have william quay dean of students said he bugged the brothers of lambda chi alpha decided to provide the packard m packard lab with a little company early sunday morning campus police politely asked the brothers to remove the volkswagen sunday night ex-presidential advisor to lecture on drug abuse by patrice wilchek peter bourne ex-presidential advisor on drug abuse will lecture at the university the end of october or the beginning of november according to charlotte lohrenz chairman of the visiting lec turers committee ( vlc although a definite date has not yet been set for the lecture bourne plans to speak on drug abuse with particular emphasis on its impact on american colleges ac cording to lohrenz bourne resigned m july from his post m the carter administration following charges that he wrote a prescription for an aide under a false name the prescription was for quaalude pills another prospective lecturer jeremy rifkom co-author of who should play god cancelled his university speaking engagement scheduled for oct 5 lohrenz said rifkom's book concerns the implications of genetic engineering he was to speak on that topic lohrenz added the engagement was cancelled because rifkom is behind on publishing deadlines for his second book according to laura schrier student activities council sac lecture chairman schrier said there is a possibility rifkom's lecture will be rescheduled another lecturer joseph sterne baltimore sun editorial page editor will speak on an editor looks at washington : at 8 p.m oct 4 m sinclair auditorium his visit is being sponsored by rodale press the scripps-howard foundation and the visiting lecturers committee sterne a phi beta kappa university graduate serves on the alumni com munications committee and the editorial advisory board for lehigh horizons he also served as an editor on the brown and white while attending the university as an undergraduate the visiting lecturers committee arranges or helps arrange guest lectures on a variety of subjects each semester the committee also helps with the funding of guest lectures arranged by departments or organizations inside t welcome doonesbury p ars review p 7 colgate falls p 12 see eight page » see business page 8 see new page 9
