graduates and second semester seniors in recognized colleges with major studies in any field are be ing sought by the federal govern ment for war jobs the civil ser vice commission announced this week positions as junior professional assistants are open to any college graduates but the government particularly desires applicants who have training in public adminis tration business administration economics economic geography library science history public welfare statistics mathematics and agriculture eligibles in these fields will be appointed to posi tions paying 1,800 to 2,000 a year plus overtime majors in english modern lan guages music education etc are in limited demand but will be considered for clerical positions paying 1,620 to 1,800 a year plus overtime under a new ruling no time limit has been set for receipt of applications for these positions examinations will be held period ically when a sufficient number of applications have been filed complete information can be obtained at the placement bureau 83 students called by air corps will report for duty wednesday in phila eighty-three lehigh army air corps reservists report next wed nesday to the u s customs house in philadelphia for active duty these men received their orders last tuesday they will be sent from philadelphia on feb 24 to the air corps training center at miami fla where they will re ceive their engineering divisions tentatively included the administrative advisory committee met yesterday after noon in the office of pres clement c williams to formulate a tenta tive plan for the army specialized training program the plan will be submitted to the war depart ment for approval according to president williams although the plan is only ten tative president williams an nounced that it would include courses in chemical civil electri cal mechanical and metallurgical engineering choice of texts and methods of instruction will be left up to the university and the ci vilian administration of the uni versity will remain in charge length of classes and other details will continue very much the same as at the present time expect 1200 army students it is expected that when the pro gram is in full swing approximate ly 1200 army students will be in training at one time the first contingent of about 400 may ar rive in april if arrangements can be completed by then according to the tentative plan the students will start with a 24 week course at the end of which some will be eliminated and re turned to other types of service those who remain will continue for a total of 48 or 96 weeks de pending on their progress and the type of work they are doing be ginning this summer all work at the university will be on an accel erated basis army students will be housed in the dormitories arrangements will be made with some of the fraternities to use their facilities as the number of army students increases and the number of reg ular students falls off rotc will continue the r o t c will continue here for those who are eligible to take the course and it is expected that the officers of the depart ment will act as representatives of the war department it is possible that students who go to the army and are accepted in the army specialized training program may be returned to le high for their training if they so desire however the university will set up a plan whereby credits obtained at other schools may be applied toward a lehigh degree the members of the adminis trative advisory committee are president williams chairman deans callen carothers congdon fort and palmer professors bea ver bidwell doan larkin ne ville sutherland diamond and smiley and registrar g b cur tis to be no change in policy at supply bureau says boss second band to be picked in near future petition is granted to dorms fraternities by danal p epstein bobby sherwood's orchestra was selected as one of the bands to appear at interfraternity ball on march 6 announced thomas m buck m e 43 president of interfraternity council the student activities committee has granted the petition to frater nities and dormitories to house dates on saurday evening march 6 the night of the ball subject to the usual houseparty restrictions this move on the part of the committee will greatly relieve many of the transportation and housing prob lems that the students faced sherwood is a guitar player who has come up fast with a rhythmic danceable orchestra he had the misfortune to be at glen island casino when the ban on pleasure driving forced it to close glen is land is the spot which started such famous outfits as bobby byrne glenn miller claude thornhill and charlie spivak on the road to the top a sensation on the west coast sherwood does his own arrang ing he is very well known for his musical versatility and takes most of the trumpet rides himself in addition to the guitar trumpet and arranging sherwood renders a good many of the vocals with the band the band itself is ex perienced and has been travelling throughout the east during the past few months since glen island has been closed tickets go on sale tuesday the ball will be informal and open to all ilving groups and will be held in grace hall tickets for non-fraternity men will go on sale at noon tuesday feb 23 in the arcadia office at 3.30 per couple an attempt was made by the dance committee to secure will osborne and his orchestra for the second band at the last minute however yesterday afternoon it was discovered that osborne had taken on a theatrical engagement for that evening negotiations are still being made with agencies in new york and it is expected that the second band will be announced in the very near future all fraternities and dormitory sections that want to house their dates in the student quarters must fill out a form which may be ob tained at dean wray h congdon's office fraternity and dorm pres idents who intend to take advan tage of this houseparty privilege should report to the dean as soon as possible approximately 250 fraternity men have left the university since september it was determined in a poll taken by the brown and white of this number the greatest losses have been felt by theta delta chi theta kappa phi and lambda chi alpha each of which has lost 16 men theta chi and alpha chi rho have lost the few est number of men three from each house only one fraternity pi kappa alpha has discontinued any of its meals and this being only sunday evening many of the fraternity houses are planning on teaming up with other houses in the near future but as yet no action has been tak en by any house six of the fraternities have men other than the members living in the house these are chi psi delta sigma phi delta upsilon pi lambda elected corresponding secretary of tau beta pi last night at a meet ing in packard lab a committee consisting of ted peters ch.e kenneth g swayne m e and david f cox phys all 44x will investigate plans for a tau beta pi memorial to be erected at a prominent point on the campus there wil be no change in policy at the supply bureau says stanly f heffner who has taken over the management dropped by johnny maxwell when he left for the army last friday heffner came to the supply bureau in september 1930 following his graduation from high school and has been here ever since he went to bethlehem business college at night and completed the three year course in two years and was a special student at lehigh for three years taking an hour of classwork a day during his lunch hour heffner is 30 years old and was married eight years ago he has two sons herbert 4 and stanley h 6 although maxwell is in the ar my he is restricted to the prince ton campus and had to get special bethlehem pa friday february 19 1943 vol l — no 32 price — 5 cents brown & white lehigh university permission to leave the grounds long enough to put his car in stor age he recently ordered equip ment from the supply bureau which couldn't be bought at princeton maxwell plans to return to his post at lehigh after his release from the army v-l 9 v-7 men to go soon navy v-l and v-7 reserve students may expect to be acti vated by the end of the semester according to dean wray h congdon these men will probably be put through short courses and then sent to other schools for training as lehigh does not have a contract to train navy men the v-l test to determine eligibility for v-5 and v-7 classi fication would be held normally in march but as yet no defin ite word has come through dean congdon said that he would not be surprised if the test were passed up
