the next two years to modify its buildings and physical plant to comply with a new federal law prohibiting discrimination against han dicapped people according to richard spriggs vice president of administration if we don't meet the requirements by 1980 there are hew health education and welfare sanctions which would in the extreme case withold all federal funding from the university spriggs said federal grants provide the university with about 5.5 million in revenue for research and about a half million dollars for student aid john woltjen university treasurer said there are several handicapped people presently at the university including blind and ambulatory persons confined to wheel chairs by definition the law covers people with mental and physical im pairments spriggs said he does not foresee a need for tuition increases to cover the cost of complying with the code renovations in 1980 elevators chair lifts automatic doors and ramps must be installed in and around the more easily modifiable buildings spriggs said in addition all newly constructed buildings must ac comodate the handicapped according to the rehabilitation act of 1973 designs for the athletic and convocation center and the midrise on fourth street include provisions for the handicapped which have been approved by state agencies spriggs said buildings undergoing renovations also must have additions for the handicapped when we go ahead with taylor house's renovations we'll have to put in physical changes for the handicapped spriggs said the law also requires changes in the university's admissions and employment programs to eliminate potential discrimination against the handicapped spriggs said spriggs is in charge of a four-member committee studying the requirements of the law it requires that adjustments be made by any institution like the university receiving funds from the hew high priority i consider this a very high priority of mine spriggs said there's a great deal that has to be done we're just getting started i'm getting literature in every day to prepare to meet the codes the language of the law is almost identical to the non-discrimination provisions of title vi of the civil rights act of 1964 and title dc of the education amendments of 1972 they respectively apply to racial discrimination and to discrimination in education based on gender the new law states there is over whelming evidence that in the past many handicapped persons have been excluded from programs entirely or denied equal treatment however john longenhagen 81 a 25 year-old student confined to a wheel chair richard spriggs campus insurance covers abortion by ed white pregnancy-related expenses including the costs of abortions are currently covered under the university's student medical insurance plan according to dr carl ruch medical director the insurance plan covers the first 1,000 for full-term deliveries and up to 250 for medical expenses incurred as an in-patient or out-patient for terminated pregnancies according to the insurance plan brochure the plan covers only pregnancies commenced during the in sured term such expenses have been covered under the university's student insurance plan since the school went co-ed in 1971 or thereabouts according to arthur mann assistant dean of students princeton university only this summer changed its insurance benefits plan to include pregnancy-related expenses and thus comply with regulations issued in 1975 by the department of health education and welfare hew according to an article which appeared in the prin cetonian the expenses were covered at the university before the hew regulation required that they be maim said we didn't do it to comply with anyone's regulations he added pregnancy-related services are handled like any other medical services ruch said of course we don't perform abortions here ruch said since we don't have those facilities students are referred to specialists if necessary he said the current survey monday and collected the results on the same day kunz said the sac is seriously con sidering a benson date a date possibly late in november or early december will be considered the marshall tucker band and little feat the other two groups on the survey received 25 per cent and 24 per cent of the vote count respectively according to yanavok another one per cent of the people responded in favor of none of the artists or wrote in the name of another artist kunz said little feat & marshall tucker have not definitely been ruled out with the poor results in favor of the marshall tucker band the 8 price and the wed nesday date kunz said it has almost been eliminated from consideration however the council is still con templating little feat kunz said kunz added that he has been
