freshman once again ritter manager of university research last night upset seven-term veteran u.s rep fred rooney in the race for the congressional seat in the 15th district the republican will assume his post as fresh man congressman in january fighting an enormous democratic voter registration edge in northampton and i^ehigh counties more than 44,000 votes ritter defeated the incumbent 65,786 to 57.891 in a victory speech in allentown tuesday night the jubilant republican told a crowded room of supporters the voters were looking for an alternative we came along at the right time voters of the 15th congressional district which includes all of lehigh and northampton counties and bethlehem made the choice for someone who offered an alternative to the direction washington is going ritter added my victory is a spark that will keep alive the american dream he said ritter said his accomplishments as a freshman representative would depend partially on what the story is in the other congressional elections i'm going to need some help down there but the political affiliations of congressmen should make little difference in attaining the congressional goal of leading the fight against inflation he added participation in an inflationary congress was one reason for rooney s defeat the 37-year-old congressman-elect said ritter said his success was also due to the theme of his representatives finally appointed by stev s e samuelson the equal opportunity advisory committee eoac held its first meeting yesterday afternoon for organizational purposes after the remaining seven representatives were appointed the eoac consists of representatives from the university's three colleges the school of education the forum the supporting staff the professional staff and the administration the committee was created by university president deming i^ewis on aug 25 as part of the university's redefined affirmative action program the first meeting was not held until yesterday however because several of the represented organizations did not appoint their representatives promptly austin gavin executive consultant to the president and a member of the eoac fall not everyone b jogging about campus preparing for the turkey trot strolling through the mountains of leaves ou area sidewalks is far more relaxing university republican club supported political underdog when studying breakdown of donald ritter's campaign workers it's not dif ficult to deduce that those of lehigh university blood tend to stick together ritter who decisively defeated seven term incumbent fred rooney for the 15th congressional district seat was surrounded by supporters from the university tuesday night as he gave his first victory speech in his allentown sheraton hotel campaign headquarters several of those university supporters were members of the campus college rupublican club according to club president alex matturri 80 about 20 members of the student organization aided ritter during the campaign we appreciate him because he really knows the people here matturri said rooney was a washington congressman ritter will probably stay in the valley as much as he can according to david spoont 80 students on campus as well as those in the republican club have expressed concern in issues such as tuition tax credits in flation and the carter administration's impact on the country's economy you'll find many students with strong political opinions but it isn't the sort of thing people bring up in casual con versation spoont added but matturri said the silence of students about politics could be due to a general apathy and not the appropriateness of the topic whatever the political climate on campus the republican club managed to attract 80 members this year for the second time this semester a female called the university switch board at 7 : 53 p.m and in a calm voice said there is a bomb going to go off in the university center building and then hung up according to a campus police report the campus police bethlehem police and assistant dean uf students muriel whitcomb made a joint decision to close ihe buiiding for ihe night eugene dax chief of campus police said members of the bethlehem fire department also were at the scene on oct 1 an operator reported receiving a call from a male stating there is a bomb in the university cen ter " as in the wednesday night incident a search of the building did not reveal a bomb the university is seriously considering the possibility of installing phone monitoring equipment dax said events which had to be interrupted wednesday night included the 20th annual federal tax forum a lecture by victor valenzuela professor of spanish an in tramurals managers meeting a lifesaving course and brown and
