1979-80 academic year was approved by the university's board of trustees on friday in addition dining charges will increase 30 annually while residence fees will increase 70 to 80 this 530 total increase will bring costs for most resident students to 6,450 for the next academic year it is an 8.95 per cent increase the 1978-79 hike was 305 a 9.43 per cent increase room costs were up 75 125 this year while dining service fees increased 30 the trustees also heard reports on construction of the athletic and con vocation center acq and rh-12 they approved the hiring of assistant registrar edward eigenbrat effective jan 8 in addition the retirement date of university president deming lewis was moved back a year to june 30 1981 . lewis will be asked in six months if he would like to stay until june 30 1982 in a letter explaining the tuition in crease lewis said it is necessary to keep a competitive stance with peer colleges in retaining and attracting superior faculty and students a new financial accounting system budgeting process and improved return on the endowment will help in the univer sity's continuing confrontation with in flation he added financial aid will increase 365,000 to help offset the tuition increase according to the letter total financial aid is budgeted at 2.5 million for 1979-80 student payments including tuition room ami board cover only 60 per cent of the university's 47 million budget the letter states the 420 tuition increase is only 75 per cent of new funds needed for the educational part of the budget faculty and support staff expenditures make up 73 per cent of the educational budget while the remaining 27 per cent goes to general operating expenditures acc progress the construction phase of the acc will be completed by march 1 according to a project status report to the board in dications are that a source for additional funds of 511,000 has been found ac cording to the report the funds will be used to pay for 100,000 in additional moveables stage basketball floor and backboards audio system lighting etc and 284,000 of additional site work according to the report site work includes parking paving grading landscaping lighting etc the 511,000 of additional funds will not cover the 1300,000 needed to install air con ditiomng but will enable the access road to be widened from two to four lanes the acc's 3.7 million turnkey con struction only budget was achieved by cutting wherever possible without unduly affecting the quality and function aspects of the budget the report noted rh-1i rh-12 the official name of which will be decided in april may be called brodhead house or brodhead plaza according to the status of projects report it also notes that approximately 176,000 of additional funds should be allotted for furnishings in the building construction is proceeding on schedule and the building may be winterized to allow work to continue through the coming months m.w ptwto by henry repaired despite repairs made to tremuey park roofs last semester this weekends ice storm again caused problems resulting in numerous leaks allied maintenance received about 40 calls concerning similar problems across the campus scattered campus damage caused by weekend storm by peter schilling the winter storm which dropped several inches of sleet freezing rain and snow on bethlehem set off fire alarms downed campus telephone lines and caused leaks in residence halls this past weekend campus police reported that sunday afternoon several power lines were down and every extension phone was out of order also according to the police water got into the phone lines and set off campus fire alarms including one in president deming lewis office the police said the maintenance crews tried to salt the icy roads during the rain but were unsuccessful because the salt just washed away while most residence halls suffered little or no damage residents of drinker mc clintic and marshall mam and taylor house and some trembley park residents were inconvenienced by leaking roof and windows residents of taylor and drinker houses reported minor flooding but the only results of the storm were a few soggy carpets probably the hardest hit by the storm was mam 38 gryphon john hughes 80 said he woke up in the middle of the night university city reach accord on brodhead will waiver by lee ann lusardi the university finally has won its fight to waive the provisions of the albert brodhead will brodhead an 1888 graduate willed 51 south side properties to the university providing that if any were sold funds from the sales must be used to maintain the others last november the university successfully petitioned northampton county court to break the will claiming that changing economic conditions on the south side made the provision im practical the city of bethlehem asked the court to reconsider on the grounds it bad not been notified of the hearing in time the will stipulated that if its provisions were not followed the moravian church or the city of bethlehem would benefit from it private negotiations between the university and the city over the past years have resulted in an amendment to the original ruling the agreement approved by northampton county court on dec 29 releases the university from the in vestment restrictions and requires it to spend an estimated 100,000 to repair south side properties the university hopes to sell a hanover township northampton county farm for as much as 700,000 the money may be used to finance rh-12 currently under construction on fourth street in july the university took out a ! 5-month 1.8 million mortgage on the building at 9 per cent interest the new residence hall may be named brodhead house or brodhead plaza according to a status report made at friday's trustee meeting the investment restrictions were modified so that investment of the proceeds of sale may be made as follows in any other real estate owned by the university in bethlehem in the albert brodhead fund in such investments as are legal for trustees under the laws of the common alpha epsilon pi now recognized as 32nd fraternity by eric miller alpha epsilon pi aepi has received full recognition from the university ac cording to william quay dean of students the decision was reached after four yeans by the dean of students office over vacation making aepi the 32nd fraternity in the university's greek system they have demonstrated that they are a very stable living organization quay said and they now have the same rights as the existing fraternities we wanted to make sure that in corporating aepi into the system would not adversely affect the existing system quay added as a result of its recognition aepi will now participate in the interfraternity council ipc and be subject to all ifc regulations particularly rush regulations until now aepi has rushed new members throughout the school year now they will have to follow the rush schedule set up by the ifc which lasts one semester aepi has also joined the fraternity management association fma the see storm page 12 see aepi page 6 see 100,000 page 6 inside : stop choking p 7
