lehigh university brown and white ill ttt llll eoac may establish subcommittees b kdwiiitk the equal opportunity advisory com mittee eoac is currently considering plans to divide into three subcommittees to better represent the university com munity according to gary burnley associate professor of fine arts and chairman of the eoac the move to establish subcommittees was suggested at thursday's eoac meeting by eric ottervik vice president for planning and equal opportunity officer for staff but the idea had reportedly been under consideration for some time the committee will meet tomorrow to decide on subcommittee structure delegate specific functions and try to establish its purpose burnley said our goals haven't been clearly established burnley said there's a real problem we need to define ourselves better several other committee members also cited diversity as the committee's main problem apparently influencing their decision to divide into subcommittees the committee needs to generate programs as well as respond to them explained * sharon friedman assistant professor of journalism and eoac repre sentative from the college of arts and science that's the role of the committee as i see it the long range goal of the eoac burnley said is to affect and promote equal opportunity on campus not only m terms of recruitment but m the creation of a better environment the committee proposed a budget along those lines with increased funds for minority recruitment he added the two-month-old committee will have a budget of 11,000 for the current fiscal year including an increase of 1,000 for minority recruitment according to preston parr vice president for student affairs and one of the university's three equal opportunity officers the budget is 4,000 less than the one presented to the university by the eoac m december parr said it is also con siderably less than the 25,000 budget originally recommended to the eoac by an ad hoc subcommittee according to friedman the eoac cut down the original budget plan to a bare-bones minimum of 15,000 friedman said we got two-thirds of it the budget does not include money formerly budgeted by the university for the salary of affirmative action officer lora liss friedman added at thursday's meeting the eoac voted informally to allocate about 250 from its student programming funds to support black alumni weekend scheduled for this weekend the idea behind the weekend is to invite black alumni to return to campus and serve as role models by meeting with undergraduate blacks and explaining what it's like out there burnley said they will find out how they can be helpful forty-five black alumni were contacted of which 25 responded he said the weekend will included reception and a trip to the basketball game against lafayette he added in other business thursday the com mittee was informed that it is possible it may have some input m the selection process for the new position of assistant to the president the position will involve about 30 per cent affirmative action-related duties according to otter vik the data gathering duties of former full-time equal oppor tunity secretary elaine kellmer will be incorporated into the new office he added kellmer a manpower employee was responsible for handling affirmative ac tion data she was released by the university m january the 17-member eoac was set up last semester to act as an advisory board to the three equal opportunity officers the committee represents a cross section of the university including the three equal opportunity officers four liaison officers — one from each college and from the school of education and repre sentatives from each college and the student body btw photo by barth no this is not the new place to pick up your id cards hiis garbage bin formerly behind garbage moved i^jtstjes beside the trembley park parking lot lewis requested its removal to the present position gary burnley vacated forum posts filled by student caucus elections by steve samuelson eight undergraduate and two graduate students were elected to forum ix last thursday by the forum's student caucus successful undergraduates were linda brett 81 aurora de la cruz 81 john dorf 81 marc holtzman 82 kenneth hollen 80 gina mcßean 82 joseph rubin 81 ; and meg erich 80 in addition michael silverman and william bower were elected to represent graduate students on the forum thirteen students ran for the eight un dergraduate positions while only two graduates filed for three open positions one graduate position on the forum remains open and interested students should contact the forum office ac cording to phyllis errico 81 secretary treasurer of the forum most of the successful candidates cited previous forum involvement m their campaign speeches dorf chairs the sub committee on security and lighting rubin chaifs the cultural affairs suucgfnitmiet of student life and mcßean serves as secretary of the administration com mittee many other candidates are members of forum committees silverman was required to resign his forum position as vice-chairman when he changed constituencies and became a graduate student last month now that he is a graduate representative he will submit his name for re-election as vice chairman at this afternoon's forum meeting eleven of the 60 student positions on the forum had been vacated since last semester necessitating last thursday's elections at the meeting of the forum's student caucus if 13 or more positions were open forum by-laws would have required that a general election be held according to silverman in other business the student caucus discussed the position of the new security man m linderman library many students expressed annoyance with the fact that he goes around telling students to get their feet off the tables some won dered whether his 2.90 an hour position was even necessary larry weitzner chairman of the forums academic environment com mittee said berry richards director of the libraries will be at the feb 13 meeting of the academic environment committee to talk about the problem and present her side of the story also at the student caucus errico cited poor attendance at past caucus meetings and questioned whether the monthly meetings were worthwhile at all many students however spoke up m defense of the caucus mentioning past experiences and discussions which they felt were ex tremely useful post for director of residence office still unadvertised by patrice wilchek the position of residence operations director which has been vacant since david lee's resignation last october has not been advertised robert reeves associate dean of students said since it's a vacant position we're taking this opportunity to reassess both the position and the way residence operations works reeves said upon lee's resignation barbara kreppel then assistant director of residence operations was appointed acting director until the position is for mally filled he noted barbara kreppel is doing an amazing job since she is essentially doing the work of two people reeves said he said that he along with william quay dean of students and preston parr vice president for student affairs has been helping kreppel but that she has been carrying the brunt of the responsibility see need page s inside birdbath review p 6 cadets ambushmd p s
