phillips sent south foster here smiley entertains o d k members price — 5 cents curtis issues schedule for jan registration bratt jones will enter gov't service tokyo report published by joseph grew lehigh loses 65 students since the start of the preseni semester 65 students have with drawn from the university then reasons for quitting range from broken limbs to enlistment in the ski troops such is lehigh's contribution tc the nation-wide loss of 13.9 pei cent of the 1,075,849 grand total oi students in 667 approved american colleges which was announced by dr raymond walters president oi the university of cincinnati whc is considered statistician-laureate of higher education dr walters whose report was published in the educational week ly school and society used nov 1 figures he said the percentage oj loss among the 746,922 full-time students was 9.5 percent in the geographical classification of the national loss the middle at lantic area including new york new jersey and pennsylvania had 105 institutions 140,955 stu dents and a loss of 5.9 percent among the lehigh men who left 21 went into the regular army either by draft or enlistment the signal corps took one the ski troops one and the air corps 14 eight enlisted for active duty in the navy and one was activated out of v-5 three enlisted in the marines and one in the merchani marine non-military excuses included illness or injury three financial difficulties eight and poor schol arship three comprising the total of 65 were 39 freshmen 18 sophomores five juniors and three seniors eleven were artsmen 20 businessmen and 30 engineers four were students in the general college division five of the withdrawees left in september 17 in october 16 in november 26 in december and one in january 1 lehigh university will not be taken over lock stock and " barrel by any branch of our mil ! itary service | either the army or the navy i will enter into contractual ar | rangement with lehigh university i to house feed and train a number | of students the number to be so \ accommodated will depend upon i what part of our facilities we make i available to the army or the navy i the rest of our facilities will be reserved for civilian students arts bus unaffected 2 the college of arts and sci i ence will not be discontinued 3 the college of business ad i ministration will not be discon tinued programs of fully accredited work will be carried forward in both the arts and business col leges 11 some things that are true up to the present moment at least > 1 students in army erc not , in advanced rotc will be called to active duty not sooner than two weeks following the close of this semester i.e about the end of january 1943 see no 11l below 2 junior rotc students in erc l will remain in school until the end of the first full semester . . . , that begins in 1943 i.e at the ' end of may according to a decem , ber 23 memorandum from the ad jutant general's office washing ton d c sophomores deferred i 3 deferment under selective t service for students in good stand r ing in engineering and pre-medi f cine may not be given to sopho , mores one year or more of col , lege as well as juniors and sen iors of course enlisted students . do not come in this category 4 deferments under selective service are open to juniors and i seniors in good standing who are > specializing a s bacteriologists chemists geophysicists meteorol l ogists physicists including as . tronomers and psychologists , note accountants economists , personnel administrators and sta ■tisticians have been removed from this list of those eligible for defer . ment continued on page four graduation exercises shifted to packer chapel dean hits rumors on lehigh plans frosh to take 8 week terms brown & white lehigh university
