lehigh university brown and white • v a,.^..-xmm>.y.*a/af bethlehem pa wednesday february 21 1979 2is-bs-_-«_t3l still crazy b-.w pt.<*o by fauntleroy engineer fans celebrate the last pin la grace hall the wrestlers move late the athletic and con with a 29-19 win the final pin m the snakepit was vocation center arena la saucon valley which can by senior captain mark lieberman next season seat np te 6,000 crazy engineer fans business college to fill eight spots by john gabuzda the college of business and economics is endeavoring to fill eight vacancies before the beginning of the next academic year according to richard barsness dean of the college three of the eight positions have already been filled and approved by the provost barsness said an additional one or iwo positions may also have to be filled if the board of trustees decides to create that many more positions for the college at its next meeting m april the high number of vacancies barsness said is due to a combination of resignations and retirements m the college coupled with a tight market for new professors to fill the openings half of the current vacancies m the college are m the department of management and finance department chairman john bonge said the vacancies were a result of two resignations last year the creation of one new position for ik de rka rtment last year md one resignation m 1977 bonge mentioned that two of the three professors who resigned did so to change careers rather than to teach elsewhere in order to deal with the shortage of full time professors m the department bonge said the department currently employs one visiting professor and several ad junct faculty from the community or other nearby areas although bonge said the shortage of regular faculty has not com promised the quality of the department the faculty m general have been hard pressed to make up for the lack of full-time personnel - bareness said he has no idea when the rest of the vacancies might be filled we have had people on campus for four of the five remaining positions we are not ac tively engaged m trying to fill them he said but added that it could be several months before he knows whether or not all the openings will be filled bareness described the current market for professors as a seller's market and noted that the best ones available have multiple opportunities from which to choose because he is looking for just such qualified professors bareness said the college would be competing for people university seeks warren square zoning variance by todd giorgio the university has applied for a per manent zoning variance which will allow student residence to continue m warren square according to eric ottervik vice president for planning and services the current temporary permit granted by the city's zoning board last year will run out near the end of this summer he added we applied for a permanent ac ceptance last year but the board issued a one year temporary permit he said according to stephen chanitz from the zoning office the reason for issuing a temporary was clear students were not getting along with the neighboring trustees return faculty proposal for tenure delay by charlotte lohrenz a proposal by the faculty which would make it impossible to grant tenure m an initial contract with the university was returned by the board of trustees to the faculty personnel committee for further study jan 19 richard sprague professor of chemistry who is serving as spokesman for the personnel committee said deming lewis university president had recommended the study begin with a comparison of the practices at the 14 schools which have also been used m the formation of the university's faculty compensation program faculty members are normally con sidered for tenure after they have taught at the university for a five-year probationary period if a member is not granted tenure after seven years his contract with the university is normally terminated tenure to administrators however sprague said the personnel committee was primarily concerned with tenure being granted to administrators at the level of a dean or higher the university will be looking for a new dean of the engineering school provost and president m the near future he noted the administration sprague explained might request that a new administrator be brought m with tenure tenure must be granted from a particular department if the administrator later asked to return to teaching he would be returned to the department where his tenure had been granted if the tenure had been granted without the normal probationary period sprague continued it would be passible that the department would prefer not to have the raff ytamtwm nn tlla fn _-..!».. _>-€»•_ launuvi nil vii la.uii increases m financial aid help middle class survive by karen gribsby is the rising cost of education forcing the middle class out of the university and making private higher education available only to upper-income students who can pay their own way and lower-income students who can qualify for the necessary financial assistance no said financial aid director william stanford explaining that increased education costs are being offset by increases m financial aid the chairman of the forum tuition advisory subcommittee janet dezube 80 said she agreed with stanford's assessment but noted that her subcommittee is also concerned with the question of whether rising costs will force lower-income students out of the university the arguments about eliminating the middle class were more political rhetoric than a reality as far as the le highs lafayettes and bucknells are concerned stanford said private higher education is self-serving to the extent that m most instances the driving force is to enroll the best students possible if a school has its own resources it's not going to lose its middle class currently of the approximately 28 per cent of the undergraduate student body receiving aid from the university almost half are middle-income students although there are varying definitions of middle income and various factors to be considered m any definition it would not be unrealistic as far as lehigh is con cerned to say middle income would range from is,ooo to 25,000 stanford said statistics from tbe financial aid office shew that 44.8 per cent of recipients of need-based university aid have family mc waes of 15,088 to 25,080 and ss.s per cent see parking page 11 see aid page 9 see retirements page 10 see initial page 7 inside eiwa preview p la harrisamvrg semester p f librmty vomdmhsm p 10
