had better beware of absent-minded and near-sighted students who may mistake him for a bench equal opportunity chairman resigns by ed white at a meeting last week equal oppor tunity advisory committee eoac chairman gary burnley announced his resignation as chairman of the eoac effective immediately the committee met last week to nominate and elect a new chairman and to work on the draft of a charge which will be presented to president deming lewis for approval m the near future burnley said eoac representative patti ota an associate professor of electrical engineering was elected to replace burnley as chairman of the committee burnley said burnley an assistant professor of fine arts will continue to serve on the com mittee but not m the capacity of chair man a spokesman for the eoac said i believe that the university has only an intellectual commitment to equal op portunity burnley said m citing his reasons for resignation they haven't really shown concern other than in tellectual they haven't shown that equal opportunity is utmost m their minds the eoac had no input m the selection of the new assistant to the president burnley continued although eric ot ter vik vice president for administration and planning told members of the eoac m january that the committee may have some input m the selection process one-third of the duties of the assistant to the president will be affirmative action related burnley noted but the com mittee was informed at the same time as everyone else after the selection was made he said we were disappointed m not being consulted ota added there is a general feeling that the com mittee hasn't been functioning very well burnley said this is because the university has not really chosen to take advantage of it ota cited different levels of experience m dealing with equal opportunity problems as another reason for the com mittee's lack of direction during its first few months there have been feelings of frustration from time to time she added the eoac met friday to approve a final draft of a charge which will be submitted to president lewis for approval ota said after putting the charge m its final form ota said she hopes to present it early this week to austin gavin executive con sultant to the president gavin will then present it to the president at a staff meeting sometime within the next few gary burnley student attacked severly injured in daylight assault by eric miller ettitorin-chief a university student was attacked and severely injured during a daylight assault last thursday on the road leading from the university center to drown hall it was the fifth serious crime incident to occur on campus this semester according to the campus police report the incident arose from an altercation between the student and one of two passengers in a passing car the victim was headed back to his dravo room after dinner with friends and in the course of conversation stuck his leg out to the street side at the same time the car carrying the undergraduates support showing of x-rated movie b ft w poll a poll of undergraduates conducted by the brown and white last week showed overwhelming student support for the showing of the x-rated film the story of ()." the poll revealed equally strong support among students for the showing of any x-rated film on campus m the future half of the students contacted felt the administration should still have a say m the selection of movies to be presented on campus however a total of 250 undergraduates responded to the random phone-poll or 5.6 percent of the undergraduate population of 4,466 the poll consisted of three questions do you think the story of o should be shown on campus do you think x-rated films should be permitted on campus m the future do you think the administration should have a say on the selection of the movies to be shown on campus to the first question 215 86 percent of those polled answered yes while only 34 ( 13.6 percent responded with a no there was one nc opinion student sentiment ran almost as strong for the second question as 210 85 percent answered with a yes to 37 14.8 percent responding no three expressed no opinion on the question the undergraduate population was divided on the question of administration : nfluence m selecting films a total of 139 51.6 percent students felt the adminis tration should have a voice m the film selection process while 120 48 percent students expressed the opposite opinion one person answered no opinion committee members favor open disciplinary hearings byjohn gabuzda four members of the university com mittee on discipline agree that open hearings of the committee can be beneficial to the university community all members of the committee who were interviewed recently agreed that when handled properly open hearings provide an important educational experience for students dean of students william quay chairman of the five-member committee said that open hearings are eminently valuable to the lehigh community and allow students to be exposed to the whole disciplinary process which is a good experience for them the committee recently held the first open hearing m its history david bell assistant professor of biology said the committee was very very pleased to have it students should know what goes on and what they are subject to via their actions bell cautioned that open hearingi can turn into public circuses and credited quay with doing an admirable job m maintaining decorum at the hearing rick herman 79 a student member of the committee said he thinks the hearings should be open as much as they can be but mentioned that cases involving deep controversies or personal problems would be better haimewi m closed sessions another faculty committee member douglas feaver professor of classics said i'm aware that it could be abused if an audience would be unruly and stage demonstrations however he said he thought that open hearings could be held providing that the spectators behave themselves hershel dorney . assistant to the dean of students is one of two university case officers case officers act as the prosecution m disciplinary cases and are not members of the discipline committee dorney described an open hearing as just like any civil court downtown anyone can go m he noted that it is important for students to
