distribution requirements for a bachelor of arts degree at its meeting on tuesday the proposal was tabled until next semester when the policy committee will be asked to present the same proposal with more information on the various sections the motion as proposed by the com mittee would establish 46-48 hours of required distribution courses thirty-eight of these would have to be taken m the student's first two years presently there are a total of 38 hours of distribution requirements to be filled 18 preliminary and 20 upperclass the faculty also defeated a motion to delete the foreign language requirement approved at the faculty's mar 12 meeting it also voted to increase the number of categories from which students could choose western civilization courses from two to three another amendment changed the required hours of western civilization from 13 to 10 while the committee acknowledged m its report that the western cultural heritage area was an important aspect of the curriculum the faculty had mixed reactions to the outlined courses arguments for and against the alter native motion to increase the number of categories were raised by charles sclar chairman of the geological sciences department and ralph lindgren chairman of the philosophy division the original philosophy of the western civilization courses was to provide the student with a sweeping panorama of the cultural backgrounds of the western world not the calico quilt offered m the alternative proposal sclar said on the other hand students need some form of time reference which is important for the production of a liberal education lindgren said m support of the proposal in a motion to delete the language requirement from the proposed distribution requirements peter beidler professor of english
