checks at doors by eric hokenson mandatory id checks at the doors of fraternity parties will begin friday oct 21 pending the administration approval a proposal to hire private security guards was voted down ' at wednesday night's interfraternity council ifc meeting in favor of the mandatory id checks the new regulation is a response to suggestions by the administration that the ifc correct security problems in fraternities without university in tervention according to steve shymon 79 chairman of the ifc security com mittee the administration has expressed concern with thefts underage drinking on campus by non-university persons and a recent incident in which a university sophomore was beaten on the hill the male student who could not identify his assailants was admitted to st luke's hospital two weekends ago ifc president steve detwiler 78 said no further information was available on the beating there are an excessive number of townspeople getting drunk on campus it has been happening with increasing regularity and has got to be stopped detwiler said the id checks will be enforced by the administration campus police and student seven art pieces valued at 1,725 taken from show by sharan daniel seven pieces of art valued at 1,725 disappeared monday from dußois gallery maginnes hall tlie 130 works in the women in the arts artists choice exhibit were hung in the gallery by 4 p.m monday at 8 p.m a university professor discovered seven pieces were missing from the walls ac cording to ricardo viera director of fine arts exhibitions and collections the burglary was reported to the campus police captain eugene dax said the case is under investigation adding we're going to have to tighten security at art exhibits the missing works including water color mixed media collage and other styles range in value from 125 to 400 apiece and are owned by various artists the pieces on display are for sale viera said he suspects the artwork was taken by someone just doing damage or van dalizing the exhibit since important valuable pieces were not touched we were in the process of hanging the pictures when the pieces disappeared he said the artwork had been hung but not yet secured to the wall viera ex plained two or three other exhibits have been burglarized in the four years viera has been here however our record of burglaries hasn't been that bad compared to the amount of work we put in he said he pointed out that his department sponsors 12 to 16 art shows each year unfortunately we don't have the funds for tight security viera commented he said people from the department check on exhibits when they can otherwise we rely on limited security and the good faith liss moved to personnel office labels reassignment a demotion by michele macdonald in a major organizational reshuffling move the administration has transferred the affirmative action office for the third time in three years the office is responsible for identifying conditions discriminatory to women and minorities and for recommending improvements lora liss affirmative action officer said she considered the action a demotion i am not being permitted to do the kind of work that needs to be done here she said in effect they have reduced my position to a mere paper position in a memorandum dated oct 3 university president deming lewis an nounced that the office would be im mediately transferred from ad ministrative services to the personnel office with the director of personnel overseeing affirmative action programs the administration made the move even though significant opposition was voiced by many faculty members two letters signed by 42 persons including faculty staff and administrators were sent to lewis at the end of september objecting to the transfer the transfer was proposed by thomas verbonitz director of administrative services in a letter sent to the ad ministration aug 15 the proposal stated that the affirmative action office had not performed up to expectations while under the supervision of verbonitz the proposal also stated that the af firmative action officer needed day to day supervision liss in a written reply to the proposal said verbonitz never complained to her about her performance while she was under his supervision i see this as an act of retribution on his part because he could not keep me from doing what i wanted to do liss said thomas verbonitz lora liss university silverman settle discrimination suit by ken handler ruth silverman former assistant professor of mathematics has settled her discrimination suit against the university out of court for an undisclosed amount of money federal judge mac troutman of the u.s district court for the eastern district bf pennsylvania signed an order monday to dismiss the case silverman filed suit against the university in december 1975 for alleged sex discrimination because she was denied tenure the university denied lhe charge sources had indicated that the set tlement was for a six-figure amount reached at home tuesday silverman said your sources are mistaken as part of the settlement the parties ruth silverman highrise plan redesigned to two seperate buildings byjanemarcin the proposed plaza highrise plan calling for one seven-story building on the site of the college theater has been redesigned to two buildings according to eric ottervik vice-president for planning tlie new plan calls for a six-story building which would be rented by the university for student housing and offices and a one-story building for commercial use the two buildings would share a rear wall the residential building would face morton street and the commercial building would face fourth street jerome barney consultant for planning said the main reason for the change in design is the increased security possible in a building used only by the university he said plans for the residential building include a bottom floor of offices or a dining area and five floors of student housing the residential building was changed from a rectangle to a 90 by 90 foot square the perimeter of the building was made slightly smaller in the new design barney said he conceded that the apartments would therefore be smaller but said the space change would result mostly in smaller halls the new plan for the university-rented building includes 44 students per floor compared with the original plan of 40 students per floor this raises the number of students that could be accomodated from 200 to 220 barney said the revised plans include design options for six or
