cyanide taps 6 new men at flagpole junior society elects members wed night six members of the class of 1945 x were elected to cyanide junior honorary activities society at a meeting held 6:30 wednesday evening at the psi upsilon frater nity announced hugh boyd m.e president the new members were tapped at the flagpole at noon to day the six men and their activities are as follows keith w amish e e 3.5 av erage for three semesters stage manager of mustard and cheese member of mustard and cheese corresponding secretary of alpha phi omega epitome competition historian of phi eta sigma and member of the newtonian society charles b austin met e sec retary-treasurer of the sophomore class handbook business board epitome board junior business manager brown and white com petition handbook photography staff freshman track competition bachelor business staff competi tion and swimming competition j harry br indie m e pres ident of the sophomore class ar cadia rally commitee announced but plans are under way for an initia tion dinner christmas service to be held sunday the annual all-college christ mas service will be held jointly for lehigh and moravian students at 3:30 o'clock sunday afternoon in packer chapel president clement c williams will read the greeting and dr claude g beardslee university chaplain will read the biblical story of the birth of christ and will offer the prayer the glee clubs of the two schools will combine to swell the choir to well over 100 voices the lehigh symphony orchestra will accom pany the choir which will enter the chapel in a long candlelit pro cession the service the second of a se ries of holiday programs planned by the canterbury club is an an nual event and is one of the few times the chapel is open to the public dr edgar e shields director of the music department is in charge of the service the choir will sing three chorals and the symphony orchestra will play two numbers navy offices to be open sunday for enlistments dean congdon announces that students who have not yet completed enlistment in the navy v-l or v-7 can do so from 8:30 a m till evening this sunday at navy offices on the 17th floor of widener building juniper and chest nut street philadelphia applications pending 13 enlisted in v-5 with 9 pending and 51 en listed in v-7 with 7 pending the marine corps has recruited 18 men 7 of whom have not yet been sworn in the army air corps has 61 men definitely signed up and 11 await ing completion of enlistment four freshmen came through their hygiene examination held during freshman week with per fect papers these men are fran cis l meinhofer chem jerome h taub ch e roy c ward eng phys and daniel m zane arts by lynn c bartlett of other almost indescribable hor rors wenzell brown recently re leased from a hong kong prison camp told 200 seniors banquet ing wednesday evening in the hotel bethlehem ball-room speaking in despair brown maine-born professor of english at lingnan university hong kong tried to bring to the reali zation of his evidently deeply im pressed listeners the plight of the 2700 civilians and 5800 allied sol diers still perishing in the japa nese prisons at hong kong imprisoned for 6 months an internee in stanley military prison hong kong for six months he told of men crying be cause they were permitted to fight no longer of men women and children suffering from beri beri — which only death could cure — and of japanese soldiers beating chinese children into bleeding unconsciousness only a quick end to the war can end the nightmarish tortures of the imprisoned allies in the far east the speaker declared in a brief after-the-speech discussion with a few seniors he stated that the japanese soldier considers it an honor and a duty to blood his sword on as many enemies as possible — whether those enemies be british soldiers american wo men or chinese children one could sense the heart-deep sincerity of his concern over the companions still in hong kong who along with him had been herded through the streets for the psychological effect their cap tivity might have on the chinese crowds brown was released in an exchange of prisoners and came to america on queen will receive an officer's cap with a cadet col onel's insignia and a lehigh regi ment seal the committee also announced that about 125 tickets were sold up to wednesday but a crowd of at least bayoneted the occupant of each bed of men so tied that they could not lie down without strangling each other — of these things and of hundreds arcadia sets bundle dates two bundle days to aid un derprivileged children in the unit ed states and needy bombed-out children in britain will be held in the university monday and tues day dec 14 and 15 the drive for serviceable cloth ing and shoes is under the direc tion of arcadia in connection with a children's clothing crusade now being conducted by the save the children federation all over the united states the arcadia committee is send ing
