possible growth in administration by sue ciiod akewitz fear that predicted adminstrative growth will result in academic losse has been expressed by lawrence leder chairman of the history department and brian finn 78 forum chairman leder emphasized the growth of the ad ministration would have to be justified the only way i can see growth of any aspect is by the reduction of others he said finn noted given there will be money problems the academic area should not be the one to be cut their comments came in response to a recent statement of harold mohler president of the board of trustees that the trend is for the administration to continue to expand to meet the growing number of governmental regulations the university must be prepared to do its job effectively according to john woltjen new university treasurer woltjcn said that although the university is concerned with academics it is necessary that it receive the proper support i.e the administration woltjen described the current period as one of transition this is woltjen's fourth week as treasurer former treasurer elmer glick will remain as vice president for financial affairs until the end of next semester because of these present circumstances it is inappropriate to make any refractions on the present situation woltjen said leder claimed president deming lewis had said earlier that the administration would be reduced there won't be any change while lewis is in office but that any successor could restructure the ad ministration the decision will have to be crowd pleoser pleaser kenny loggins brings the fans stack space in the libraries according to berry richards director of libraries current stack space in both linderman and mart libraries is filled to capacity she said three short-term expedients are being used until facilities are constructed under phase ii of the new century campaign in the next decade richards explained the current collection in both the stacks and in storage is being sorted to remove books which are outdated or could be better used elsewhere richards said innumerable factors are involved in deciding which books are kept and which are sold or relocated she said non library space now used for offices and seats is being converted into stack space while periodicals are being selec tively converted into microfilm richards noted not all periodicals can be con verted however because they are not as easy to use for research purposes in that form she explained new technological additions will be inciuueu when new facilities are com pleted such as a terminal in place of the card catalogue facilitating use of the libraries she said all available stack space in mart library will be totally filled by 1980 richards said all nonlibrary areas of mart eventually will be converted into stack space including the all-night study room and the breezeway alternative seating space will be found elsewhere she said by 1985 only 450 seats will be left after conversion of seating into stack area but by that time new facilities should be completed richards said the large 19th century reading room in linder man which was necessary when only closed stacks were used will be converted to stack space she said remote storage areas continually are being sought in various places on campus richards said old editions of reference sets will be placed in department collec tions and libraries may be started in the residence halls she explained remiss forum members to face possible removal by peter schilling forum members who are grossly negligent in their duties may soon face removal from the organization according to mary tarduno 78 forum secretary treasurer a by-laws change adopted last year that enables the forum to remove such members will begin to be enforced in the next two weeks she explained although the by-laws change providing for the removal of forum members was passed in the fall semester of 1976 it has never been applied according to tarduno the purpose of the by-laws change is to increase the forum's effectiveness by replacing members who are not sincerely interested in forum activities currently she said the chairmen of the forum standing committees are reviewing their meeting attendance sheets looking for members who haven't shown up at a meeting yet although attendance at meetings is an important criterion for judging forum members tarduno explained it is not the sole factor responsible for their removal sometimes people have tests and sometimes they just forget to sign the attendance sheet she said it would not be
