lehigh university brown and white 21s-jms433i vol 89 no 20 bethlehem pa tuesday november 15 1977 new lighting to be installed next to alumni building by deborah barker three permanent light fixtures will be installed along the road next to the alumni memorial building according to muriel whitcomb assistant dean of students funds have been allocated for the lighting she said but i don't know when it will be put m director of physical planning jorris rosse is working on it now and he hopes that it won't be too long whitcomb added that our staff is pleased that the need was recognized and that there was a quick constructive response this is very encouraging the area near the alumni memorial building was one of 14 areas deemed to have insufficient lighting or no lighting at all according to a university survey of campus lighting last year eric ottervik vice president of planning said earlier this month that only five of the areas had been given lighting the poorly lit area near warren square has been a source of concern to many warren square men and women ac cording to jean benoit 79 a wairen square gryphon benoit said she would like to see lighting installed soon but we have to be realistic there are a lot of channels to go through and stop-gaps along the way warren square gryphon leslie orysh 78 said she has mentioned the problem several times to authorities and we have determined that maybe the best way is to have parents write letters it seems to me that action takes place when parents get involved now that lighting has been approved we're overjoyed and i'm sure that the people living on montclair will be also said bob lospinoso area coordinator however he added that the future lighting must be adequate and not low wattage like the lighting behind the president's house i disagree that it will look like a parking lot if somebody gets raped or killed the university will then spend money to upgrade lighting and we cant wait until that happens lospinoso said orysh said she would also like one light to be installed between the warren sauare houses and summit avenue on the side yard benoit said however that installing light fixtures around summit avenue is something the university can't do a whole lot about because it's city property whitcomb said a meeting will be held next week to reestablish priorities m terms of long-range plans and to determine other campus areas with the greatest need of lighting so that when money is freed up we can move into doing something the next two priority areas to be given lighting will probably be sayre park and the park adjacent to the alumni memorial building she said although there is some lighting on the hill whitcomb said there's no question that the hill is still the blackest hershel dorney assistant to the dean of students agreed that there could be more lighting on the hill there's a long way you can go before it becomes a parking lot he said dorney explained that the problem of in sufficient lighting on the hill is par forum committee review o f highrise plans delayed by sharan daniel the latest plaza highrise plans released by the architect oct 19 might not be reviewed by the forum student ad visory committee until after thanksgiving according to jeff lobach 79 a committee member the constraint of time isn't on us like it was when the occupation of the highrise was set for fall of 1978 he said the earliest completion date now being considered for the building is fall of 1979 another reason the committee has not discussed the plans according to com mittee member caryn gorbunoff 80 is that it has not found a time that is con ducive to everyone's schedules although the committee has not reviewed the plans individual members have looked at them most of them said the newest plans are an improvement over the previous set the new plans are much more feasible pam lynch 79 said one improvement is that a maximum of six persons m a suite is called for instead of eight as m the old plans she noted she said this change will help alleviate crowding m the suites and make it easier to find compatible groups to live m them lynch also said that most suites will resemble trembley park apartments with two double bedrooms or one double and two singles jeff lobach jazz man award-winning jazz musician chuck mangione brought his new band to grace hall friday night and got several standing ovations after the show members of the audience stayed to talk with band members and mangicne's father who was selling mangione t-shirts and albums m the lobby mangione played to a half-full house police scarce for lafayette game by anette taylor bethlehem city police are having a difficult time recruiting enough manpower for this year's lehigh-lafayette football game according to capt frank gyorek the university has requested the assistance of 25 policemen to work the game but 25 men just cannot contain the crowd gyorek said we can call m additional street men on duty to assist us if the crowd becomes too threatening but we don't like to strip the city of police protection m order to control the stadium gyorek said police capt robert bennet who has been m charge of city police protection at the lafayette game for the past 25 years has refused to work at the game this year the kids don't care who they hurt bennet said they get bombed out of their skulls and even though we plead with them they just won't listen to reason there simply is no way to control the crowd at that game gyorek suggested that fighting at the game can be prevented beforehand if the university will only cooperate and work with us university proctors with good common sense should be placed m the stands to control potential mobs he recommended the city police will not baby university students at this year's game gyorek said in the past local magistrates have refused to punish real troublemakers sending them home with a simple warning and a rap on the knuckles gyorek said this has left a very bad taste m the mens mouths furthermore city police are disgusted with the amount of drinking that goes on at the game and with the lack of university cooperation m controlling the flow of alcohol into the stadium he said con sequently our attitude at this year's game will be to punish severely any student who joel sold out fastest sole for sac show tickets for the dec 2 billy joel concert sold out m less than two days this was the fastest sellout for a university concert according to gary hirschberg 78 student activities council sac concert chair man they sold faster than for peter frampton april 76 and jackson browne october 76 the last two sellouts hirschberg said the billy joel show should turn over a good profit he added and the concert account should show a profit at the end of the year the sac was taken by surprise by the ticket sales chuck heller 78 sac president said adding that most of the tickets were bought by university students any profits made must be given to the dean of students office to cover a concert deficit of 14,000 incurred by the sac over the past five years the sac was able to save a tremendous amount of money m the
