lehigh university brown and white vol 89 — no 22 bethlehem pa tuesday november 22 1977 215-866-0331 warren square proposal defeated by wayne stottmeister an amendment to give preferential room-selection treatment next year to warren square residents who make it through the spring lottery was defeated thursday 8-4 by the residence hall subcommittee of the student life committee of the forum warren square residents requested the amendment because they said they have endured and overcome undue hardships m their residence this year the details of the proposed amendment's preferential ireatmeiit were unspecified but would have given warren square residents extra points m the room selection process which might have allowed them to keep their current residence according to mike silverman 79 committee chairman warren square residents complained at the recent residence hall subcommittee meeting that when they arrived at the beginning of the semester the residences were unfinished lacking paint dressers drapes towel racks linen exchange and washers and dryers tammy minick 81 said when she arrived only three beds were m the room and that the people m her room had to live out of suitcases the first few weeks dave arzapalo 81 said that on three occasions when the campus police were called to warren square they were un familiar with it and had to stop and ask for information con cerning which houses were included which ones were occupied by men and which ones were occupied by women according to subcommittee member caryn gorbunoff , 80 points currently are allotted m the following way : one for rising sophomores two for rising juniors without squatters rights three for rising seniors without squatters rights four for rising quay notices few problems at football game by jerry miller no major discipline problems occurred at saturday's lehigh-lafayette football game according to william quay dean of students most people were there to watch the football game not to get drunk quay said he said he knew of no arrests made at the game although one lehigh fan and one lafayette fan were ejected from the game for drunkenness people found with alcohol at the gate were turned away by private pinkerton guards quay said a number of booties of liquor were con fiscated m the stands he noted explaining that fans hid the bottles behind concession stands before the game quay said the smoke bomb set off on the west end of the stadium m the final minutes of the game was apparently mace or tear gas used by police to keep fans off gridders win cup get play off berth by kathy mitchell engineers beat pards improve record to 9-2 it was a great weekend the engineers 35-17 come-from-behind victory over lafayette was sweet but what happened sunday was even sweeter the sunday after the 113 th meeting between lehigh and lafayette the engineers were awarded the 1977 lambert cup symbol of eastern supremacy m division 11 later that day the awaited call came the ncaa selected the engineers as the wild-card team from the east to play the university of massachusetts m the playoffs this saturday both these post-season laurels may not have come about had the engineers not won the game saturday and what a game it was whether it was nervousness or visions of playoffs dancing m their heads the engineers heavily favored m the game let the leopards take the game to them until near the end of the third quarter with the gridders trailing 17-14 defensive back pete fenton blocked a 50-yard field goal attempt by dave heverling to spark an 11-minute 21-point outburst following the blocked kick the overflow crowd of 18,000 finally saw the expected as mike rieker and steve kreider teamed up twice m a row kreider's first reception m this series was a beautifully thrown b&w photo by fauntleroy rambling fullback mau ricketson 49 ambles through a hole m lafayette's defensive line as kevin mccarthy 54 strains to catch the sophomore runner ricketson ran one yard for a touchdown and caught an eight yard toss from rieker for six points andy vandergrift 73 led the blocking for ricketson's run treasurer cites possibility of indoor-arena endowment by jay yana vok the indoor arena currently being built m saucon valley could be endowed ac cording to john woltjen university treasurer earlier this year the university board of trustees rejected a forum recom mendation that an endowment fund be established for the building the en dowment would have helped cover the projected 100,000 annual cost to maintain the arena the board favors using money from the university general operating fund for maintenance the arena could be endowed anything's possible however the question is not one of university policy but whether or not they could raise the funds there's nothing wrong with the principle behind endowing the arena the only questions are where will the money come from and will it take funds away from another aspect of the university " woltjen said arena dig students protest the groundbreaking for the indoor arena m saucon valley on saturday as university president deming lewis and five other dignitaries picked up their shovels the
